Lena is a village in Oconto County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white family at the site that became Lena was the French-Swiss immigrant Étienne Clement Roserens (also spelled Rosera, 1831-1911) and his French-Canadian wife Vitaline née Tessier (1842-1919) Their daughter Anna Rosera Hendricks (1874-1951) was the first white child born in the settlement. Other early white settlers in this vicinity arrived in the late 1870s and consisted primarily of French Canadian immigrants. Lena was incorporated as a village as a town in 1921. The village is located at 44°571N 88°33W (44.950453, -88.051066). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.03 square miles (2.67 km²) The first church in Lena was a Seventh Day Adventist church, built in 1880. A Catholic church was built in 1882, and a Methodist church in 1888. A Lutheran church was also built in the early 20th century. The town of Lena is located within the Town of Lena and is home to the Lena High School, a public high school, and the Lena Junior/Senior High School. The high school is located in Lena and has a junior/senior high school that was founded in 1872.
History
Lena is the primary city name, but also Stiles are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Lena, Wisconsin. Lena, Wisconsin, was originally known as Maple Valley. The first white family at the site that became Lena was the French-Swiss immigrant Étienne Clement Roserens (also spelled Rosera, 1831-1911) Rosera Street in Lena is named after the family. Lena was incorporated as a village in 1921. The name "Maple Valley" had already been assigned to another Wisconsin post office, and the recommendation of a new name fell to Oconto Postmaster George R. Hall (1853-1935). Hall submitted the first name of his future wife (Helena "Lena" Louisa McCartney, 1858-1927) to the federal postmaster. Lena is located on the Wisconsin-Illinois border and was founded in 1872 by French-Canadian immigrant Sam King (1842-1919) King donated land for the first schoolhouse in the area. The town is now home to the University of Wisconsin-Oconto, which was founded by Sam King in 1871. It is located along Jones Creek, a tributary of the Little River, which flows into the Wisconsin River. The village is located near the junction of the Wisconsin, Illinois, and Illinois Turnpike, which runs through the town. It was the site of the U.S. Civil War Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1864. The Battle was fought over the right-of-way between the Wisconsin and Illinois rivers. The Wisconsin River flows through the village and into the Illinois River.
