Shullsburg

Shullsburg is a city in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, United States. Founded in 1827 it is one of the oldest settlements in Wisconsin. It is known for its history of lead mining and its cheese industry. There are 34 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places on its historic Water Street Commercial District. Shullsburg High School was built in 1900 designed by the town physician Dr. C.C. Gratiot. The 8-Acre Badger Park, designed by Phelps Wyman, was completed in 1942 by the Works Progress Administration. In February 1943, a collapse at the Mulcahy mine killed two miners, then a second collapse killed six of the rescuers who were trying to dig the first two miners out. In 1974 the Emily Franz Scholarship Fund was formed to help high school students pay for college and is today worth 1.8 million dollars. In 2001 a new library and community center was built with private funds only. In 2016 it was named a Wisconsin Main Street Community. The city has a total area of 1.11 square miles (2.87 km²) According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has the population of 1,226, with 534 households, and 324 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 99.1% White, 0.2% Asian, and 2% from two or more races. In the city, the population was spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 21, 24.5% from 25 to 44, and 45.8% from 45 to 64.

History

Shullsburg was founded during the 1820s in parts by Jason Shull and Henry Gratiot and due to their ventures into lead mining. In 1841 Missionary Priest Samuel Mazzuchelli platted the Northeast section of town and named the streets after the virtues of life. After arrival of railroad in the 1880s the Water Street Commercial District saw the construction of its many brick and limestone buildings. The last working lead mine in the Upper Midwest Lead District closed at Shullsburg in 1979 and the town fell on hard times. During the 1990s and 2000s the restoration of buildings became important to building preservationists. In 2016 it was named a Wisconsin Main Street Community. The town is home to St. Matthews Church and Parish, one of the oldest Catholic parishes in Wisconsin. In 2010 the parish celebrated its 175th anniversary with a mass led by Bishop Robert C. Morlino. Today (2019) the K-12 school serves the community of Shullburg and 360 students. The school is a Romanesque structure built in 1900. It is highlighted by arched windows and three arched door openings that form arcades across the buildings facade. The building is built of limestone quarried from the local Rennick Quarry. In 1949 a gymnasium was built of matching limestone with crews provided by the Motherland Works Progress Administration. Another gym addition occurred in 1996. Today the sextagonal steeple stands at 135 feet tall with a 12 foot cross. In 1907 the steeple was felled in a storm and was replaced the following year along with the placement of stained glass windows.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.11 square miles (2.87 km²), all of it land. The city is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have a population of more than 1,000. The population of the town was 1,071 at the 2010 census. The town has a history dating back to the 18th century. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1881. It has been the scene of numerous battles between Native Americans and settlers since the 19th century, including several battles in which the city was a site of refuge for the Native Americans in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It also hosted the opening of the Ohio River, which flows through the city and into the Mississippi River. The river was named after the town's first inhabitants, who lived in the area from 1805 to 1810. The Ohio River was the source of the river's name; it is also known as the "Ohio River" or the "Discovery River" because of its location in the Great Lakes region of the United States. In the early 20th century the city became known for its role as a hub for the mining industry, which was based in the nearby town of Doylestown. The area was also known for being a popular tourist destination, especially for its blacksmiths.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 21.5% from 25 to 44, 29.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43.3 years. For every 100 females, therewere 94.9 males. ForEvery 100 females age 18 and over, There were 92.7 males. The average household size was 2.3 and the average family size was2.96. The city is located in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is based in Fort Worth, Texas. It is one of the largest military bases in the state, with more than 1,000 troops stationed in the area. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. It has been home to the Army National Guard since the 1950s. The U.N. has a base there, which has been used as a base since the 1960s. It also has a military air base, which was used during the Second World War.
