Darlington

Darlington is a city in and the county seat of Lafayette County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The first residence within the city limits of Darlington was a log house owned by Jamison Hamilton in 1836. The city was first organized in 1849, but was known for a long time as the town of Centre. The streets of the town were named after the wives of the planners and prominent men of the community, such as Minerva, Mary, Harriet, Lucy, Louisa, and Cornelia. The Ringling Brothers Circus and Darlington were also interested in the circus, and they invited the Parson Brothers to join their own circus in 1884. The population of the city was 2,462 at the 2020 census, and the city is surrounded by the Town ofDarlington, which has a population of 2,500. The town was named after Minerva, the wife of James G. Knight, the first president of the village, and Mary was the wife. of Josepheus Driver, one of the first businessmen of Dar Burlington. The name was changed because Joshua Darling purchased the land in 1850 with the help of J.M. Keep and J.B. Lynde. The county seat was moved from Shullsburg to Darlington in 1857, and a courthouse was built using county funds. The courthouse was also moved toDarlington in 1861, and in 1869 the town became known as Darlington. The current mayor is Michael Schulder, who was elected in 2010.

History

Darlington was first organized in 1849, but was known for a long time as the town of Centre. The Parson Brothers, Joe and Alfred E. "Butch" Parson, from Darlington were also interested in the circus. The Ringlings had their own band, playing the bass drum, the cornet, and the tuba. The Parsons joined the Ringlings in 1887 and performed on the high wire. In 1906, the Ringling Brothers were making more than $30,000 a year. The town of Darlington, Wisconsin, is now a suburb of Madison, Wisconsin. The city was founded in 1847, and was named after Minerva, Mary, Harriet, Lucy, Louisa, and Cornelia, the wives of the original founders of the community. The name Darlington was changed to Darlington in 1869 after Joshua Darling purchased the land in 1850 with the help of J.M. Keep and J.B. Lynde. The first school was opened in the winter of 1850, with 15 students. The Mineral Point Railroad reached the town in the fall of 1856. In 1857, the county seat was moved from Shullsburg toDarlington. The courthouse was built using county funds, paid for with a charitable gift. The county court house is the only one in Wisconsin, Paid for by a successful mineral miner in the county. In 1861, the town became known as Darlington. It is now the home of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.34 square miles (3.47 km²), all of it land. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have been named after a president or prime minister. It has a population of 2,788. The town's population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. It was the first city to be named after President Abraham Lincoln, who died in office in 1864. It also is the oldest city in New Mexico, having been founded in 1836. The population was 1,876 at the time of the 2010 Census, and 2,638 at the 2000 Census. The area has a history of being named after presidents Abraham Lincoln and William McKinley, both of whom were born in the town, as well as President Theodore Roosevelt, who founded the city in 1804. The current mayor, John McPherson, was elected to his first term in office on November 4, 1914. He was re-elected to a second term on November 6, 1914, and a third time on November 16, 1918, and again on November 24, 1918. The last time the city was named for a president was in 1924, when it was elected for a fourth term. The first mayor to die in office was George H.W. Bush, who was killed in a plane crash in 1944.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,451 people, 994 households, and 623 families residing in the city. Ethnically, the population was 23.7% Hispanic or Latino of any race. It will be the largest city in the state, with a population growth rate of 0.7%. It is the only city in New Mexico that has a mayor-council government. It also has the highest percentage of African-American residents, at 0.8%. It has the lowest percentage of white residents, with 0.4% of residents being white.

Economy

It also has a high school population of 245 students and about 21 students in high school. In the elementary and middle school, there are about 70 students in each grade. The High School has about 250 students in grades 9-12 and about 200 students in junior high. The Elementary School has around 100 students in its kindergarten through eighth grade class. Attractions

Darlington is near Yellowstone Lake State Park, where there is swimming, camping, fishing, and boating. The Cheese Country Recreational Trail, which is over 50 miles long, can be used by ATV riders. The Pecatonica River Trails Park is a city-maintained campground with 24 sites of river-front camping. A Cinco de Mayo celebration is held near the river in May. The Lafayette County Fair is in July and has displays of livestock, a midway, a carnival, and a concert. There is an annual Holiday Parade the first Saturday in December. The Darlington Golf & Country Club has a nine-hole golf course. The town has a public swimming pool that is open every day from June until August. The community has a Veterans Memorial Park and Festival Grounds, and Riverside Park has a softball field, basketball court, and playground, and Black Bridge Park has sand volleyball courts, soccer field, and flag football field. The Main Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are Friday night stock car races, a county fair, and an Antique Days celebration in September and November. A Canoe Fest is held in June, with canoe races, live music, a Carnival, a concert, and the annual Holiday Open Houses are held in November. The Town of Darlington calls itself the "Pearl of the PECatonica" because the river flows through the town, and people used to harvest the clams out of the river to make pearl button blanks.
