Ripon is a city in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,733 at the 2010 census. Ripon is home to the Little White Schoolhouse, the commonly recognized birthplace of the Republican Party. The modern Ripon Society, a Republican think tank, takes its name from Ripon. The city was named for the English cathedral city of Ripon, North Yorkshire, by John S. Horner, one of the community's original settlers, because that was where his immigrant ancestors originated. It is located in the Sinnipee Group, a geologic formation composed primarily of dolomite, with limestone as a secondary rock type. The limestone indicates that Ripon's location was once a shallow sea. It lies in an area that was affected by several glaciation periods. The area has relatively gentle relief and is part of the Fox River (Wisconsin) watershed. The town is surrounded by the Town of ripon, which was established in 1844 by the Wisconsin Phalanx, a group of settlers inspired by the communitarian socialist philosophy of Charles Fourier. It was founded in 1849 by David P. Mapes, a former New York steamboat captain, and absorbed the nearby commune of Ceresco within two years. In 1854, some 30 opponents of the KansasNebraska Act called for the organization of a new political party (to link their cause with the Declaration of Independence). Jackson, Michigan, also claims to be the true birthplace of theRepublican Party. The city was named for the English cathedral city of Ripon, North Yorkshire, by John S. Horner, one of the community's original settlers, because that was where his immigrant ancestors originated. He also named most of the streets in the city after his immigrant ancestor, who lived in Ripon and named his house after the city. The town is now the site of the Ripon University, which was founded as Brockway College in 1851. It is also the home of the Wisconsin Phalanx, a group of settlers inspired by the communitarian socialist philosophy of Charles Fourier, who established a commune in 1844 in the town of Ceresco. It was the first political meeting of the group that would become the GOP in February 1854, in a meeting at a school house in Rip on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River. The group insisted that no further political compromise with slavery was possible. It also insisted that the Missouri Compromise or a prohibition of slavery extension be restored.

The city has a total area of 5.02 square miles (13.00 km²), of which, 4.97 square mile (12.87 km²) is land and 0.05 square miles [0.13 km²] is water. It is located in the northwest corner of Fond du Lac County. It has a population of 2,816. The town is located on the Wisconsin River. It was once known as the "Ripin River" and was once called the "River River City" because of its name. The river is now known as "The Fox River" due to its proximity to the Wisconsin-Minnesota border. It runs through the town and is a major source of drinking water for the town. It also serves as a gateway to the town of Wausau, Wisconsin, which is in the state's Upper Peninsula. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population to be 2,081.
