History
Buckley is a small town in Washington state. It was named for J.M. Buckley, Northern Pacific Railway district superintendent. The town's first store was erected by "Dad" Chamberlain in 1885. Buckley is home to Mount Rainier State School and the White River Power Plant. It is also home to the Wickersham elementary school and the Rainier School for the Blind and Hearing impaired. It also has a number of lodges, including the Western Star Lodge, F&AM, and the Eola Rebekah Lodge. Buckley was founded in 1882. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with most of its residents living in or near the town center. The city is located on the eastern edge of Mount Rainer, which is the tallest mountain in the U.S., at 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) above sea level. It lies on the northern edge of the Cascade Range, which rises to 4,200 feet (1,200 meters) in the west. The White River runs through the town, and is the source of the town's namesake, White River, which runs to the west of the city. Buckley's name is derived from the name of its first post office, which was established in 1888. The name Buckley means "white river" or "white water" in German. The word "buckley" means "town" in English, and "bruised" in Spanish, which means "to burn".
In pop culture
In the 1990 film Waiting for the Light downtown Buckley and locals had cameo appearances. In the 1996 comedy Black Sheep, Al Donnelly (Tim Matheson) and Mike Donnelly ("Chris Farley") were both from Buckley. The town was featured on the cover of "The New Yorker" in the early 1990s. It was also featured in the film "The Godfather: Part II" in 1994. The city was also the setting for "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in 1998. The film was based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and was set in the town in the 1950s and '60s.
