Redmond is a city in King County, Washington, United States, located 15 miles (24 km) east of Seattle. The population was 73,256 at the 2020 census, up from 54,144 in 2010. Redmond is best known as the home of Microsoft and Nintendo of America. The city's urban downtown lies just north of Lake Sammamish; residential areas lie north and west of the lake. Summers tend to be warm and dry, with low rainfall and sunny or partly sunny from June to September. The average temperature in August is 111 °F (44 °C), with November being the rainiest month. Redmond has a mild climate for most of the Pacific Northwest, but still gets dry and dry. It has a high pressure system, driving out the snow from the Puget Sound area, but snowfall is not as rare as in other cities near the area. History
Native Americans have lived in the Redmond area for about 10,000 years, based on artifacts discovered at the Redmond Town Center archaeological site. The first European settlers arrived in the 1870s. The abundant forests and fish of Redmond provided jobs for loggers and fishermen, and with those jobs came demand for goods and services, bringing in merchants. In 1978, the U.S. Census Bureau proclaimed Redmond the fastest growing city in the state. By the late 1980s, Downtown Redmond had become "a series of strip centers surrounded by parking lots", sparking plans for a mixed-use revitalized downtown. In recent years, the city has seen rising traffic congestion as a result of its rapid expansion, particularly in areas of urban sprawl. Light rail service via the East Link Extension from Seattle to Redmond is set to open in 2024. The completion of the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge across Lake Washington in 1963 allowed Redmond to flourish as a suburb of Seattle. The city expanded over thirty times larger in area through annexations between 1951 and 1967. From 1956 to 1965, Redmond was bordered by the town of East Redmond, which was formed by rural homeowners and later dissolved by the Washington Supreme Court. In the 1990s, Redmond underwent a commercial boom during the 90s, culminating in 1997 with the opening of Redmond Town Centre, a major regional shopping center on the site of a long-defunct golf course. Redmond is located in the Snohomish County, Washington, and is home to the University of Washington.
Geography
Redmond is bordered by Kirkland to the west, Bellevue to the southwest, and Sammamish to the southeast. The city has a mediterranean climate (Csb) with warm to hot summers and cool winters. The average warmest month is August, with November being the rainiest month. It has a mild climate for its latitude, but still gets all four seasons. Summers tend to be warm and dry, with low rainfall and sunny or partly sunny from June to September. Winters tend tobe cool and wet, with October being the driest month. The lowest recorded temperature in the city was 7°F (22 °C), in January 1950. It is located on the edge of the Olympic Peninsula, which is part of the state of Washington. Unincorporated King County lies to the north and east, and Overlake, the city's second urban center, is to the east.

As of the census of 2010, there were 54,144 people, 22,550 households, and 13,890 families residing in the city. The average home value in 2014 was $649,000. Economy
Microsoft moved its headquarters to Redmond in 1986. Other companies with headquarters in Redmond include Nintendo of America, Genie Industries (now part of Terex), Physio-Control, Visible.net, WildTangent, Solstice (acquired by Samsung) and Data I/O. SpaceX and Hyperloop Genesis announced opening of a facility in Redmond in 2015. Unlike Bellevue and other neighboring cities, the city of Redmond does not have a business and occupation tax on income. However, to help offset the costs of road improvements for businesses, a business license fee of $55 per employee was approved in 1996. As of 2016, the fee is $107 per employee. According to Redmond's Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports, the top employers in the city are: Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft 365. In June 2006, Microsoft purchased former Safeco's Redmond campus at 4515-5069 154th Place NE for $220.5 million. Their focus will be R&D and manufacturing for a proposed internet communications satellite constellation and new transport systems. In 2015, SpaceX andHyperloop Genesis said they would be opening a facility at the same location as the Microsoft Redmond campus in Redmond, with plans to expand the facility to a second location in Issaquah, Washington. The city of Bellevue has a business tax of $75 per employee, and the city has no business tax on incomes. In 2012, there were over 94,000 workers, and over half are contractors.
Culture
Redmond has a collection of outdoor sculptures throughout its streets and parks. The Concerts at Marymoor is an annual summer series of concerts. The Old Redmond Firehouse is a hub in the thriving Eastside independent music scene. Since 2010, by city ordinance, Redmond has appointed a poet laureate. Redmond Saturday Market is the oldest farmer's market in the Seattle area's east side. It is held on Saturdays from May through October on approximately 8,000 square feet of land near the Redmond Town Center. The City of Redmond has approved an ordinance that the current market site be preserved for its community and historic significance. The city has designated the following landmarks: Redmond Derby Days, Redmond Lights, and Redmond Central Connector as historic landmarks: redmond derby days, redmond lights, and redmond central Connector. It has been home to Cirque du Soleil since the 2004 tour of Varekai when a concrete base was built for them to set up on. Since then, tours of Corteo (2006), Kooza (2010), Amaluna (2013), Kurios (2015) and Luzia (2017) have played in this spot. The venue has been host to artists as diverse as Norah Jones, Peter, Paul & Mary, Rob Thomas and Duran Duran. It also hosted the Warped Tour and Cavalia in 2012 and 2014. The town of Redmond is home to the Eastside Symphony, the Second Story Repertory theater company, and the Redmond Performing Arts Center.
Parks and recreation
Redmond has 47 public parks totaling over 1,351 acres (547 ha) The largest park within the city is not owned by the city it is King County's 560 acres (2.3 km²) Marymoor Park is one of the most popular in King County. The city offers over 59 miles (95 km) of public trails for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Redmond North Little League won the Northwest region and participated in the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, PA in 2004. With Redmond North claiming the Northwest, it is the third team from Washington to claim the Northwest since its inception in 2001. Previous Washington champions were Bainbridge Island (2001), Richland (2003), and Redmond North (2004). Redmond North is a member of the Pacific Northwest Little League, which is based in Seattle, Washington, and has a team called the Redmond North Red Sox. The Red Sox are the only team in the league that has ever won the World Series. The team has won the title three times, in 2004, 2005, and 2006, and the most recent win was in 2007, when the Red Sox won the world championship. Redmond has a population of 4.2 million people (4.3 million in 2010). The city is home to the Seattle Seahawks football team, which won the Super Bowl XLVIII championship in 2010. It is also the home of the Seattle Sounders baseball team, who won the MLS title in 2010 and 2011.
Government
Redmond has a non-partisan mayorcouncil form of government. The mayor and seven council members are elected at-large for staggered four-year terms. The city council authorized a ballot measure in March 2003 that would have changed Redmond to a council-manager government. However, it was rejected by the electorate, receiving less than 30% of the vote. It would have been the first time a city in Washington state has had a mayor-manager system of government in more than 30 years. The measure was approved by the city council on a 6-1 vote, with the mayor and 7 council members at- large elected for a staggered 4-year term. It was approved on a 7-2 vote, and the mayor was re-elected for a second term in 2004. It is the city's second attempt at changing its government form after a similar measure was rejected in 2003, with a vote of 6-3. The vote was the first in the city since the city was founded in 1858. The current mayor-coun council form ofgovernment was approved in 2000. It has been in place since the early 1990s. The council is made up of seven members elected by the mayor, with seven at- Large members elected for staggered 4 year terms. It's the first city in the state to have such a form of city government, and it's the only one in Washington State with such a large number of at-Large council members. It also is the only city in which the mayor is a Democrat.
Education
Most of Redmond is part of the Lake Washington School District, which also encompasses almost all of Kirkland and parts of other surrounding communities. The public schools in Redmond include ten elementary schools, eight middle schools, and two high schools. The district also offers "choice" schools at all levels for alternative schooling needs. The city is home to Redmond Regional Library, the second-largest branch in the King County Library System.DigiPen Institute of Technology and a secondary campus owned by Lake Washington Technical College is currently being leased to the City of Redmond for a Community Center are located in Redmond.
