The city is located on the shores of Lake Elma, which is a body of water that is part of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Washington state. Elma is home to the Elma Airport, one of the busiest airports in the U.S. and the only one in the state with an international airport. The airport has a passenger capacity of 1,000,000 (1,100,000 km²). The airport is located near the town of Elma, which has a population of around 1,500 (1.5 million people). The city's airport is one of only a handful of airports in North America with a population in excess of 1 million (1 million or 1.6 million people) The airport also serves as a hub for the town's international airport, which is located just south of the border with New Mexico. It has a diameter of about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) and an area of 0.03 miles (0.08 kilometers).
