Port Angeles

Port Angeles is a city and county seat of Clallam County, Washington, United States. With a population of 19,960 as of the 2020 census, it is the largest city in the county. The city's harbor was dubbed Puerto de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Port of Our Lady of the Angels) by Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza in 1791. By the mid-19th century, after settlement by English speakers from the United States, the name was shortened and partially anglicized to its current form, Port Angeles Harbor. It is the birthplace of football hall of famer John Elway and residents include writers and artists. Port Angeles is served by William R. Fairchild International Airport. Ferry service is provided across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the MV Coho. The area was long occupied by succeeding cultures of indigenous peoples. The first Europeans to the area tended to trade with the Native Americans. It was not until the 19th century that European Americans began to settle here. In 185657, the first settlers arrived and they were followed by the Cherbourg Land Company in 1859. The town was incorporated on June 11, 1890, and was named the county seat in later that year. In 1914, large-scale logging began with construction of a large mill and a railway connecting the hinterlands to the mill. Other mills were soon built and the lumber and pulp mills supported the economy of the area until well into the century.

History

In 1791, the harbor was entered by Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza, who named it Puerto de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Port of Our Lady of the Angels) The first Europeans to the area tended to trade with the Native Americans. A small whaling, fishing and shipping village developed, which traded with Victoria, British Columbia. A village of 300 in 1886, Port Angeles' population grew to 3,000 by 1890. The town was incorporated on June 11, 1890, and was named the county seat of Clallam County later that year. In 1914, large-scale logging began with construction of a large mill and a railway connecting the hinterlands to the mill. Other mills were soon built and the lumber and pulp mills supported the economy of the area until well into the century. The mills began to close in the 1970s and 1980s until only one pulp mill remained in operation; the Rayonier specialty pulp mill was shuttered in 1997. In August 2003, a $275 million construction project known as the Graving Dock Project was started in Port Angeles near the water as part of the Hood Canal Bridge east-half replacement project. During construction, human remains and artifacts were discovered. This site was found to be the "largest prehistoric Indian village and burial ground found in the United States," according to a senior archaeologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Seattle. The archeology site also included Native American burials of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Geography

The coordinates of Port Angeles are 48°0647N 123°2627W (48.112969, -123.440713). The city is situated on the northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula along the shore of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Port Angeles has a mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb). It is heavily moderated by the Pacific Ocean, resulting in cool summers and mild winters for its latitude. On June 27, 2021, Port Angeles set a new all-time record high of 97 °F (36 °C), breaking the city's previous record of 96 °F. The city receives about 4 in (10 cm) of snow each year, but it rarely stays on the ground for long. The average annual precipitation total is approximately 25 in (640 mm), compared to Seattle's 38 in (970 mm) Summers are far cooler than those of nearby Seattle, with summer highs rarely above 80 °C (27 °C) In the winter, the city can be vulnerable to windstorms and Arctic cold fronts that sweep across the Strait. The harbor is deep enough to provide anchorage for large ocean-going ships such as tankers and cruise ships. It is also the location of the headquarters of Olympic National Park. This park was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938, during the Great Depression. It encompasses most of the Olympian Mountains, which are located in the rain shadow of the city. The south shore of Vancouver Island and the city of Victoria, British Columbia are visible from Port Angeles to the north.

Demographics

As of the census of 2020, there were 19,960 people, 8,783 households, and 4,826 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 86.9% White, 0.8% African American, 3.2% Native American, 1.8%. The median income for a household in the US was US$130,130, and the median age was 40.6 years. The city has a population of 19,038, with 8,053 households. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was2.79. The median age in theCity was 41.6. The gender makeup ofthe city was 48.6% male and 51.4% female. The population density was 1,823.1 people per square mile (704.0/km²). There were 9,567 housing units at an average density of 893.28 per squaremile (344.9/ km²) The city is located in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers region, which is part of the Army National Guard and the Army Air and Space Command. It is home to the National Guard’s 7th Army District, which includes the Fort Sill Army Ammunition Plant, the Army Reserve, the Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard. The U.N. has a presence in the City of Sill, where it has a military base and a military airfield. It also has a National Guard Air Station.

Education

Peninsula College is a community college based in Port Angeles that serves the Olympic Peninsula. The Port Angeles School District operates five elementary schools, one middle school, a high school, an alternative high school and a vocational school. There are two private schools, Queen of Angels Catholic School and Olympic Christian School, both of which serve grades K-8. The school district also operates an alternative school, the Port Angeles Alternative School, which serves grades 9-12. The community college, Peninsula College, is a two-year institution. It is located in the town of Port Angeles, California. The college was founded in 1973 and is based in the city's downtown area. It offers a variety of programs for students in grades 7-12, as well as an alternative education program for high school students. It also offers a vocational program, the Peninsula Vocational School, for students who want to pursue a career in the field of business. The district also has a private school that serves grades 5-8, the Queen of angels Catholic School, and a private Christian School that serves students in the grades 7 to 8. The public school district operates a number of alternative schools, such as the alternative school and the vocational school, which serve students from grades 9 to 12. There is also a private high school that offers classes in grades 11 to 12, the Olympic Christian High School. The high school also offers an alternative program for grades 13-14, called the Olympic High School of Science and Technology, which offers classes from 9 to 14.

International relations

Mutsu, Aomori, Japan, is a sister city of Port Angeles. The cities have an exchange student program set up through the Port Angeles School District. The city of Mutsu is located in the Ishikawa region of Japan. It is located on the island of Honshu in the Honshoku region of the East coast of the country. It has a population of 1.5 million. The town is located near the city of Aomorori, which is in the Gifu region. It was founded in 1872. It lies on the east coast of Japan and is on the West Coast of the U.S. it is in Ishikawa, a region known for its culture and cuisine. It also has a large population of immigrants from the West coast of America, including many from Japan and the United States. Its population is about 1.6 million, and the city has a total population of 2.2 million. It's located in a region called Ishikawa. It includes the cities of MutSU and AomORi, as well as the town of Mokoto, in the Kansai region of north-eastern Japan, where the city is located. The port city is also known as Mokoko, which means "the city of the mountains" in Japanese and "Mokoko" in English. The capital city of Ishikawa is also called Mokokoko and is located at the base of a mountain, the Mokko Peninsula.
