Virginia, officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States located between the Atlantic Coast and the Appalachian Mountains. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as the first English colonial possession established in mainland North America and "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2018 is over 8.5 million. Virginia has a total area of 42,774.2 square miles (110,784.7 km²), including 3,180.13 square miles (8,236.5 km²) of water, making it the 35th-largest state by area. Virginia is bordered by Maryland and Washington, D.C. to the north and east; by the Atlantic Ocean to the east; by North Carolina to the south; by Tennessee to the southwest; by Kentucky to the west; and by West Virginia to the north and west.

As shown in the given Virginia location map that Virginia is located in the eastern part of United States. Virginia map also illustrates that it is the coastal state located on the western Atlantic Ocean. Hence, in the eastern side, it has the coastline along the Atlantic Ocean; however, the state shares its border with North Carolina in the south, Tennessee and Kentucky in the south-west, West Virginia in the west, and Maryland in the north.

Interestingly, the nickname of Virginia is “Old Dominion” and sometimes it is also known by the name “Mother of Presidents” because surprisingly, Virginia is the birth place of 8 US Presidents. The capital city of state is Richmond; however, Virginia Beach is the most populous city and Fairfax County is the most populous political sub-division of the state. Moreover, the Virginia General Assembly is the oldest legislature in the United States.

Due to its geographical location, the climate type of Virginia varies from warm to humid; the warm current Gulf Stream modifies the local weather system of Virginia.

The US State Virginia occupies 102,283 m², about 1,12 % of the total territory of the USA of 9,148,020 m². The total population of the US State Virginia with 8,470,020 inhabitants (in 2017) has already increased by 19,66 % in this millennium. Almost 40 years ago there were 3,123,202 fewer people. The capital Richmond alone has 233,796 inhabitants.

Richmond replaced Williamsburg as the state capital in 1779. In Richmond it is illegal to flip a coin in a restaurant to see who will pay for coffee. Virginia Beach has 452,602 residents.

Virginia's boundary with Maryland and Washington, D.C. extends to the low-water mark of the south shore of the Potomac River. The Chesapeake Bay separates the contiguous portion of the Commonwealth from the two-county peninsula of Virginia's Eastern Shore. The bay was formed from the drowned river valleys of the Susquehanna River and the James River. Many of Virginia's rivers flow into the Chesapeake Bay, including the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James, which create three peninsulas in the bay. The climate of Virginia is humid subtropical and becomes increasingly warmer and more humid farther south and east. Seasonal extremes vary from average lows of 26 °F (−3 °C) in January to average highs of 86 °F (30 °C) in July. The Atlantic Ocean has a strong effect on eastern and southeastern coastal areas of the state. Influenced by the Gulf Stream, coastal weather is subject to hurricanes, most pronouncedly near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. In spite of its position adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, even the coastal areas have a significant continental influence with quite large temperature differences between summer and winter, particularly given the state climate's subtropical classification, which is typical of states in the Upper South. Forests cover 65% of the state, primarily with deciduous, broad leaf trees in the western part of the state and evergreens and conifers in the central and eastern parts of Virginia.

Virginia is known under different nicknames; aka Mother of Presidents, or Mother of States, or Horse Country, or The Old Dominion and detailed official information about Virginia can be found on the homepage at www.virginia.gov.

(Have you noticed nobody ever complains about the weather being 'cold and humid?) It's in the summertime that we notice the humidity the most, when it's hot and muggy. Our Comfort Index uses a combination of afternoon summer temperature and humidity to closely predict the effect that the humidity will have on people.

Its important to note that this is not the average (or arithmetic mean). The median home price is the middle value when you arrange all the sales prices of homes from lowest to highest. This is a better indicator than the average, because the median is not changed as much by a few unusually high or low values. The property tax rate of $9.11 shown here is the rate per $1,000 of home value. If for simplification for example the tax rate is $14.00 and the home value is $250,000, the property tax would be $14.00 x ($250,000/1000), or $3500. This is the 'effective' tax rate.
