Hoquiam (Ho'-kwee-um, or Ho-kwim, to natives) was incorporated on May 21, 1890. Its name comes from a Native-American word meaning "hungry for wood" The population was 8,776 at the 2020 census. It borders the city of Aberdeen at Myrtle Street, with Hoquiam to the west. The two cities share a common economic history in lumbering and exporting. It shares a long rivalry with its more populated neighbor, especially in high school sports. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.60 square miles (40.40 km²), of which, 9.02 squaremile (23.36 km²) is land and 6.58 square mile (17.04 km²") is water. The city experiences a Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification Csb) that borders closely on an oceanic climate. Outside of the mild and dry summer season, rainfall is generally very high and monthly totals of over 20 inches (510 mm) are not unknown. Snowfall is rare and indeed does not fall many years, but in the winter of 1964/1965 as much as 40.8 inches (1.0 m) of snow fell in two storms. In 1907, Hoqiam was home to Industrial Workers of the World Industrial Union No. 276. In 1936, the Grays Harbor Pulp and Paper Company merged with Rayonier Incorporated, a company which manufactured a certain kind of wood pulp used to produce rayon.
History
One of the first logging operations in Hoquiam was established by Ed Campbell in 1872. Captain Asa M. Simpson, a Pacific Coast mariner and businessman in the lumber industry from San Francisco, provided the financing for the Northwestern Mill. The extension of the railroad from Aberdeen toHoquiam, beginning in 1898, contributed to the continued importance of logging and lumber. In 1927, a pulp mill was established under the name of Grays Harbor Pulp Company. A year later, a Pennsylvania company- the Hammermill Paper Company- became interested in Grays Harbour Pulp. In 1936, the Grays harbor Pulp and Paper Company merged with Rayonier Incorporated, a company which manufactured a certain kind of wood pulp used by its customers to produce rayon. In 1907, Hoquien was home to Industrial Workers of the World Industrial Union No. 276. The mill was later renamed the Simpson Lumber Company, and retained that name until 1906. In 1913, Frank J. Shields became the new manager at the mill at Hoquium. In 1916, the mill built a paper mill and became the Gray Harbor PulP & Paper Company. The Grays Peninsula Lumber and Lumber Co. was founded in 1882, and later merged with the Miller Brothers Lumber & Lumber Corp. to become the Northwest Lumber Corporation. The Northwest L lumber Company was later named the Simpson-Miller Lumber Inc. in 1886, and in 1906, it was renamed the South Pacific Lumber Ltd.

It is one of the smallest cities in the state, with an area of just over 15 square miles, or 9.2 km². It was founded in 1783. It lies on the eastern edge of the Atlantic Ocean and is the largest city in New England, with a population in excess of 1,000, or 1.3% of its total area. It also has a small amount of land to the west, or 6.4 square miles.

Arts and culture
Hoquiam sponsors the Shorebird Festival, the Logger's Playday, the Hoquiam's Riverfest, and the On Track Arts Festival. Loggers from around the world come to participate in a parade and logging competition every September. The town is home to the Australian Open, which is held every year in the town. The city is also the site of the World Logging Championships, which take place every September in the city. It is also home to a number of other festivals and events, including the Australian Art Festival and the Australian Music Festival. The village is also known as the birthplace of Australian sport, with many sports teams based in the area, such as the Australian Football Association and Australian Rules Football Club. It also hosts the annual World Logger Championships, in which loggers from all over the world take part in a competition and parade. It was founded in 1881. The name of the town comes from the word "hoquiam," which means "to log" or "to harvest" in the local language. It means "the place of the logger" and "the land of the logger" in English. It has a reputation for being very active in the logging industry, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. It's also the home of the world's largest logging company, the Australian Logging Association, which has more than 2,000 employees. The community is known for its festivals and celebrations. The festival is held annually in September, including a parade, a logging competition and a festival of all kinds.
Sports
The main sports team in the town is the Hoquiam High School Grizzlies, the Crimson and Gray. In 2004, the boys basketball team completed a perfect 280 season and won the state 2A championship. The city is now home of the Grays Harbor Bearcats, a developmental football team of the North American Football League (NAFL) Historically, the city has been home to several Minor League Baseball teams including theHoquiam Loggers and the Graying Harbor Ports. Since 1981, Hoquium High School has hosted the largest distance running event on the Washington coast. The Hoquien Grizzly Alumni Cross Country Invitational features 35+ schools and 1,000+ high school runners every October. Hoquai also sponsors the Grizzly alumni Wrestling tournament in January and Volleyball tournament in September. In 2006, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) changed the enrollment limit for the 2A classification allowing Aberdeen to drop to 2A along with other schools in the area creating a new league. The old league football rivalry which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006 was renewed with the 101st meeting between Hoquami and Aberdeen on October 14. In 2010, Aberdeen holds the overall record at 67-33-5 as of the 2010 season. In 2011, Aberdeen High School held its annual Fall food drive, referred to as the "Food Ball" and dedicated to helping local low-income families. In this competition everyone wins regardless of which school collects the most food donations.
Infrastructure
The local airport, Bowerman Airport, is coastal Washington's only jet-capable airport. It has a 5,000-foot (1,524 m) runway and a parallel taxiway located on a narrow peninsula extending westward into Grays Harbor. Hoquiam is also home to dozens of species of migratory birds that nest along the water's edge during the milder months. The local airport is also the only airport in the state to offer a direct flight link to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the nation's only other major international airport.
