Lebanon is a city in Linn County, Oregon, United States. The population was 18,447 at the 2010 census. The city sits beside the South Santiam River on the eastern edge of the Willamette Valley, close to the Cascade Range. Lebanon is known for its foot-and-bike trails, its waterside parks, and its small-town character. Western University of Health Sciences opened their College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, Northwest in August 2011, the first new medical school in Oregon since Oregon Health & Science University was established. Lowe's Regional Distribution Center is the largest employer in Lebanon, with 650 employees. The other major employers are Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, Lebanon Schools, Wal-Mart, Weyerhaeuser, and Entek International. It also has a number of private schools, including the private Christian Academy. It has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town of Lebanon. It was the site of the U.S. Civil War Battle of Lebanon, which took place from 1861 to 1865. The city is also the birthplace of the Oregon Trail, which runs through the town's center. History

Lebanon was established on the land of the Louis Band of the Santiam Kalapuya. By 1907, Lebanon was one of the leading strawberry-growing areas in the Willamette Valley. Lebanon had a cheese factory, a creamery, potato warehouses, a cannery, and prune and nut driers. The local wood-products industry began to grow around 1900, which the supply of timber in the upper Midwest declined. Lebanon's economy began a slow decline in the 1970s, and in 1984, the hardwood mill shut down and the plant in Weyerhaeuser shut down in 2004. The town's most celebrated crop has been strawberries, but as of 2020, only one local strawberry field remains. The city's population grew by 115 percent from 1940 to 1950, and the plywood plant now called Cascade Plywood, began producing hard composite board in the 1960s and '70s. It is now the largest plywood mill in the U.S. and the world's second-largest plywood-making plant in the world, after "Evansville" on the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1847 by Jeremiah and Jemima Ralston, who named it for Jeremiah's birthplace of Lebanon, Tennessee. It became a stop for gold seekers on their way to California, and a village grew up around the store, which was built in 1855. It now has a post office, a library, a theater, a bowling alley, a park, a museum and a park.

Arts and culture

Lebanon is the home of the World's Largest Strawberry Shortcake, a part of the annual Strawberry Festival that began in 1909. The Strawberry Festival includes a Junior Parade, a Grand Parade (featuring the Strawberry Royalty Court), and a carnival. It is held the first weekend of June, and includes a junior parade and a grand parade. The festival is held in the town of Aqrab, in the south of the country.
