Astoria is a port city and the seat of Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. Founded in 1811, Astoria is the oldest city in the state and was the first permanent American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. The city is named for John Jacob Astor, an investor and entrepreneur from New York City, whose American Fur Company founded Fort Astoria at the site. Astoria attracted a host of immigrants beginning in the late 19th century: Nordic settlers, primarily Swedes, Swedish speaking Finns, and Chinese. The Nordic settlers mostly lived in Uniontown, near the present-day end of the Astoria Megler Bridge, and took fishing jobs. By the late 1800s, 22% of Astoria's population was Chinese, and Astoria had a significant population of Indians, Sikhs, and the Ghad Party, a political movement on the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada to overthrow British rule in India. The population was 10,181 at the 2020 census, and it is expected to grow to 11,000 by the end of next year. The AstoriaMegler Bridge connects to neighboring Washington across the Columbia River. The port city is served by the deepwater Port ofAstoria, which is located on the south shore of the Columbia river. U.S. Route 30 and U.N. Route 101 are the main highways, with the 4.1-mile (6.6 km) Astoria megler Bridge connecting the city to Washington.

History

Astoria is a port city on the Columbia River in Oregon, United States. It was founded in 1811 by the Pacific Fur Company, a subsidiary of John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company. In the early 20th century, the North Brewing Company contributed substantially to the economic well-being of the town. Astoria has been eclipsed in importance by Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington, as economic hubs on the coast of the Pacific Northwest. It remains a port of entry for the lower Columbia basin and remains the center for the water trading over a water supply system of the Columbia Plateau. The city is home to the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, which is part of the U.S. National Park Service. It is also the home of the Oregon Coast Guard, which was established in 1846 to protect the coast from incursions by Native Americans. The town has been home to a variety of cultures, including the Nordic, Chinese, and Indians. It has also been the site of a number of international sporting events, such as the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics, as well as the 2014 Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi, Sochi, and the 2016 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. It also hosted the 2012 Winter Olympics Games, which were the first Winter Games to be held in the United States since the opening of the Winter Games in 1998. The 2014 Winter Olympics were held in Vancouver and will be the first to be hosted by the Canadian Olympic Games. It will also host the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Astoria lies within the Mediterranean climate zone (Köppen Csb), with cool winters and mild summers. Rainfall is most abundant in late fall and winter and is lightest in July and August, averaging about 67 inches (1,700 mm) of rain each year. Snowfall is relatively rare, averaging under 5 inches (13 cm) a year and frequently having none. Astoria is tied with Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Port Arthur, Texas, as the city with the highest average relative humidity in the contiguous United States. The record high temperature was 101 °F (38.3 °C) on July 1, 1942, and June 27, 2021. The most rainfall in one month was 36.07 inches (916.2 mm) in December 1933, and the most in 24 hours was 5.56 inches (141.2mm) on November 25, 1998. The wettest "water year", defined as October 1 through September 30 of the next year, was from 1915 to 1916 with 108.04 in (2,744 mm) and the driest from 2000 to 2001 with 44.50 in (1, 130 mm) Astoria has a total area of 10.11 square miles (26.18 km²), of which 3.95 sq miles (10.23 km²) are covered by water. Astoria operates under a councilmanager form of city government. Voters elect four councilors by ward and a mayor, who each serve four-year terms. Education

The Astoria School District has four primary and secondary schools, including Astoria High School. Clatsop Community College is the city's two-year college. The city also has a library and many parks with historical significance, plus the second oldest Job Corps facility in the nation. Tongue Point Job Corps center is the only such location in the country which provides seamanship training. Astoria is home to the U.S. Navy's second-oldest training facility, the only one in the United States to provide seamanship and other skills training. It is located on the banks of the Columbia River, near the town of Astoria, New Mexico. The Astoria River runs through the city, and the city has a number of historic sites. The town is also home to a large number of historical landmarks, including the Astoria House, which was built in the 19th century. It was the first building in the city to be built in Astoria. It dates back to the 18th century, and was built on the site of a former mining site. It has a population of around 2,000. The fourth album of the pop punk band The Ataris was titled So Long, Astoria as an allusion to The Goony. Astoria is featured as a city in American Truck Simulator: Oregon. In the series finale of the TV show Dexter, the title character, Dexter Morgan, ends up in the city. The city is featured on the cover of the album "Hey You Guys!!" by the band Marianas Trench. The album's back cover features news clippings from Astoria, including a picture of the port's water tower from a 2002 article on its demolition. The band states the album was inspired by 1980s fantasy and adventure films, and The Gooney's in particular, as it was set in the area. The song "Astoria" is the first on the album, and it is set to the tune of "The Goonies" Astoria was the setting for the film "Short Circuit", which was filmed in the early 1960s. The film was based on the book "The Black Stallions of Short Circuit" by Michael J. Fox. The book was written in the late 1950s and the first half of the 1960s, and was published by Simon & Schuster.

Warships named Astoria

Two U.S. Navy cruisers were named USS Astoria: a New Orleans-class heavy cruiser (CA-34) and a Cleveland-class light cruiser (CL-90) The former was lost in the Pacific Ocean in combat at the Battle of Savo Island in August 1942, during World War II. The latter was scrapped in 1971 after being removed from active duty in 1949. Both ships were built in the 1930s and 1940s by the United States Navy and the Italian Navy. They were both named after the city of Astoria in the Italian province of Lazio in the province of Liguria in the region of Lazia in the north of the island of Corsica in southern Italy. The ships were decommissioned in the 1950s and 1960s and scrapped in the 1970s and 1980s, respectively, after being taken out of active duty and removed from the Navy's fleet in 1949 and 1971, respectively.
