Gresham began as a settlement in the mid-1800s, but was not officially incorporated as a city until 1905. It was named after Walter Quintin Gresham, the American Civil War general and United States Secretary of State. The city's economy was fueled largely by farming, including berries, grapes, and vegetables. In August 2016, the town was the place of the racially motivated murder of Larnell Bruce. The population was 105,594 at the 2010 census, making G Resham the fourth largest city in Oregon. History

The area now known as Gresham was first settled in 1851 by brothers Jackson and James Powell, who claimed land under the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850. In 1884, a local merchant petitioned the U.S. Post Office Department for a post office in his store, and offered to name it after Postmaster General Walter Q. Gresam if his request was granted. At the same time, other members of the community secured a postoffice called "Campground", another name for the area, referencing the religious camp meeting ground located there and the valley's usefulness as a stop-off for travelers on their way to Portland. Once the Post Office department realized its mistake, it revoked the Campground post office. The town was incorporated in 1905, the year of the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition; its population at the time was 365. In August 2016, the town was the place of the racially motivated murder of Larnell Bruce, who was shot and killed by a white man in the parking lot of a Portland, Oregon, apartment complex. The city's city library, which began as a small book collection in the town's general store, was officially established as the G Resham Branch Public Library in 1913 with a grant from the Andrew Carnegie library fund. In 1984, the hospital moved to Stark Street and became Mount Hood Medical Center.Gresham's early settlers would go on to form the outlying communities of Boring, Sandy, Fairview, and Estacada.

Geography

Gresham is located twelve miles (19 km) from downtown Portland. The dividing line between Portland and Gresham's city limits is roughly at SE 162nd Avenue in some areas. The city is located roughly seventy miles (110 km) east of the Oregon Coast. It has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb/Csa), with warm and sunny afternoons and only very occasional rainfall. winters are cloudy with cool to cold afternoon, occasional frosts, and frequent long rainy periods. The total area of the city is 23.43 square miles (60.68 km²), of which 23.20 square miles [60.09 km²] is land and 0.23square miles (0.60 km²) is water. The area includes parts of Fairview Creek and Johnson Creek, which run through the city. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city has a total population of 2,071. The population was 2,081 in the 2010 United States Census, and 2,097 in the 2011 U.N. Census. The United States Geological Survey estimates the city's population to be 2,068. The elevation of the town is 325 feet (99 m), with the majority of its elevation coming from a hill on its eastern border. It is located in the eastern part of the Cascade Mountains, in the foothills of the Mount Hood Mountains. The town is located on the eastern side of the Columbia River, where it meets Troutdale.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 105,594 people, 38,704 households, and 25,835 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 76.0% White, 3.5% African American, 1.3% Native American, 4.3%. Asian, 0.7% Pacific Islander, 9.8% from other races, and 4.5%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.9% of the population. The median income for a household was $43,442, and the mean income for the family was $51,126. About 8.4% of families and 12.5%) of the residents were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7%) of those 65 and older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.22. The city's median age was 33.6 years and the gender makeup was 49.0%. It is the largest city in the state, with a population growth rate of 7.7%.

Arts and culture

The Louise Home Hospital and Residence Hall, is located in west Gresham, and serves as a social services facility. The Jacob Zimmerman House, a farmhouse built by German-American settlers in 1874. The Emanuel and Christina Anderson House and William Gedamke House, both Victorian Queen Anne homes built circa 1900. The G Resham Carnegie Library, built in 1913. The Dr. Herbert H. Hughes House,Built in 1922. The Charles and Fae Olson House,A modernist home built in 1946. The David and Marianne Ott House, A ranch house built in 1952. The George Washington House, Built in 1881. The Henry Washington House, built in 1883. The James Madison House, constructed in 1885. The John Jay College of Music, which was founded in 1887, is based in the town. The University of Wisconsin-Gresham has a chapter of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a branch in the city, which opened in 1903. The town has a number of historic homes, including the HamlinJohnson House and the Anderson House, which were built in 1888 and 1900, respectively. It also has a Carnegie Library. Government

The City of Gresham operates under the councilmanager form of government. The mayor and city council are elected to be the legislative and policy-making body. The council appoints a city manager who is responsible for the daily operations of the city. The city manager of G Resham is Nina Vetter, who was appointed to the position on May 3, 2021. She will serve a four-year term, ending in May 2019. She is the first woman to serve as city manager in the city's history, and the first African-American woman to hold the position in the state of Oregon. She has been in the position for less than a year, but will be the city manager for at least five more years if she is re-elected in 2020. She was the first female city manager to serve more than one term, and is the second woman to do so in the State of Oregon, after the previous woman was elected in 1996. She served as the City Manager for two years, before becoming the City manager for a further two years. The City Manager is elected by the City Council in November of even-numbered years. In election years divisible by four, (e.g., 2000, 2004, 2008), three councilors are elected. Education

Gresham is served by three school districts: Centennial, Gresham-Barlow, and Reynolds. Mount Hood Community College is the only college located within the city limits. According to the US Census, 27.16% of the G Resham residents had a bachelor's degree, while 9.93% had earned a master's degree or above. Private schools include Portland Adventist Elementary School, Eastside Christian School, and Morningstar Montessori school. The city is home to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which takes place in the summer. The town is also the site of the Oregon State Fair, which is held every year in September. The fair is one of the largest in the state, drawing thousands of visitors each year. It is also home to Oregon State University, which holds the state's only women's college program. The state fair is held in the town's fairgrounds, which attracts thousands of tourists every year. The festival is also known for its outdoor activities, such as the Oregon Trail, which runs through the town. Gresham is accessed from the west via Interstate 84 and via U.S. Route 26 from the east. It is served by TriMet's bus system and the MAX Light Rail Blue Line. The city is also served by the fareless Sandy Area Metro shuttle bus to Sandy, Oregon. Gresham has a population of about 2,000.
