The community is located on the east side of the island of Hawaii at 19°3526N 155°413W (19.590584, -155.070142) It is bordered to the northeast by Keaau, to the southeast by Orchidlands Estates, and to the south by Hawaiian Acres. Hawaii Route 11 passes through the community, leading north 10 miles (16 km) to Hilo and southwest 20 miles (32km) to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Kurtistown CDP has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.4 km²), all of it land. The median income for a household in the CDP at the2000 census was $46,012, and the median income in 2000 was $51,176.
