Keaau is on the east side of the island of Hawaii at 19°3716N 155°230W (19.621072, -155.041706) It is bordered to the southwest by Kurtistown. The Board on Geographic Names officially designated the populated place as Keaau in 2003. The population decreased by 12.1% from 2,253 at the time of the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.7 km²), all of it land. The median household income was $39,722 and the median family income in 2000 was $43,347. About 9.6% of families and 12.3% of the population were below the poverty line in 2000, including 14.9% of those under age 18 and 9.0% of people age 65 or over. The average household size was 3.21. For every 100 females, there were 99.6 males. ForEvery 100 males there were 100.4 females. Males had a median income of $27,344 versus $23,287 for females. There were 757 housing units at an average density of 302.8 per square mile (116.9/km²). Keaau is on the east side of the island of Hawaii at 19°3716N 155°230W (19.621072, -155.041706) It is bordered to the southwest by Kurtistown. Hilo is 8 miles (13 km) to the north. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.7 km²), all of it land. The Board on Geographic Names officially designated the populated place as Keaau in 2003. It is located on the island's east side, at the junction of Hawaii Route 11 (the Hawaii Belt Road) and Hawaii Route 130 (KeAau-Pahoa Road) The community is located in the eastern part of the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i, on the eastern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii. It has a population of 1,856. The CDP was officially designated as a populated place in 2003 by the U.S. Census Bureau. The community was first named in the early 20th century by the Hawaiian Islands Board of Geographic Names. It was named after the Hawaiian word for the same name, "keaau" (pronounced "kee-au"). It is also known as "Kaua" or "Kai" in the Hawaiian language, and as "kau" in Hawaiian. The town is home to the Kailua-Kona School District.
