History

Elk Grove was founded in 1850 as a stage stop for travelers coming from Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area. On July 1, 2000, Elk Grove incorporated as a city. The city's growth peaked in 2004 and 2005, when Elk Grove was declared the fastest growing city in the US. Apple Inc. manufactured its iMac line in Elk Grove as late as 2002. After many of those tasks were offshored in 2004, the facility was converted into the modern Apple Elk Grove campus. In 2018, Apple invested $4.2 million into expanding the office space, expanding its already established AppleCare support presence in the region. Elk Grove suffered heavily from the subprime mortgage crisis due to its suburban nature. In 2008, the city was declared one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States by the Kauffman Foundation. In 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau declared Elk Grove the fastest Growing City in the U.-S., with a population of more than 1.3 million. In 2010, it was named the No. 1 city in California by the California Department of Public Policy and Tourism. The town is located in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley, near the city of Sacramento. It was named after the Elk Grove Hotel and Stage Stop, which was opened by James Hall in 1850. In 1868 the Western Division of the Central Pacific Railroad came through about a mile east of Elk Grove. At this new location another hotel was built to accommodate travelers.

The officer, Bryan Wayne Schmidt, was convicted of felony assault by a Sacramento Superior Court on March 14, 2022. In December 2021, a lawsuit was filed which alleges that Sgt. Gabriel Ramos coerced a single mother into sex, threatening action against her son if she would not comply. At the beginning of each year, the board selects from its members a president and vice-president to serve during the ensuing year. The district covers 157 square miles (410 km²) Located in southern Sacramento County, the district is the largest Community Services district in California and provides parks, recreation, fire protection and other services to residents of Elk Grove and its surrounding areas. In November 2016, Steve Ly became the second one directly elected mayor following Gary Davis. He is the first ethnic Hmong mayor in the United States, having come here at the age of four with his family as refugees from Laos after the end of the Vietnam War. Currently, Bobbie Singh-Allen sits as mayor.

Elk Grove is serviced by a fared bus system called E-tran that traverses many of the city's main routes. There are plans for SacRT to expand its light rail system two miles south from Cosumnes River College to Elk Grove Boulevard, however these plans for a new light-rail station are currently in the planning phase. Amtrak California San Joaquin intercity rail and Altamont Corridor Express commuter rail were expected to be brought directly to ElkGro in 2021, on the existing rail line which extends from Marysville in the north to Stockton in the south. However, that project has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing wildfires throughout the state.Cosumnes Community Services District owns and operates over 100 parks in Elk Grove, including Emerald Lakes Golf Course. Elk Grove is home to the Elk Grove Country Club, which has a membership of over 1,000 people. The Elk Grove Public Library has a collection of more than 2,000 books, many of which are free to the public. The city also has a library branch that is open to the general public, as well as a number of community centers and libraries. The town is also home to a community center that has been open since the 1970s, and a library that was opened in the 1980s.
