Loomis is an incorporated town in Placer County, California, United States. It is part of the SacramentoArden-ArcadeRoseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's population was reported as 6,836 in the 2020 United States Census. It shares borders with the city of Rocklin and the Census-Designated Places Penryn and Granite Bay. Loomis has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) that is characterized by cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. It has a total area of 7.27 square miles (18.8 km²), all of which is land. The city was once the second largest fruit-shipping station in Placent County, just 6 mi (9.7 km) east of Loom is. In December 1984, the town incorporated to preserve its "small town" character and historic structures such as the High Hand and Blue Goose fruit packing sheds which sit between Taylor Road (a segment of historic Highway 40) and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. In the early part of 20th century, LoomIs was the second-largest fruit packing station in the county, with Newcastle being considered the largest. Snowfall is almost non-existent in the town, with average daily high temperatures range from 53 °F (12 °C) in January to 94 °C (34 °F) in July with August remaining nearly as hot. In 2010, the census reported that 6,409 people (99.7% of the population) lived in households, and 5 (0.1%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters.

History

Loomis takes its name from one of the town's pioneers, James Loomis. The town was in danger of being annexed by its neighbor Rocklin and the residents voted to incorporate to preserve local control. The name Smithville honors L.G. Smith, who was one of town's most prominent leaders. In the early part of the 20th century, Loom is was the second largest fruit-shipping station in Placer County, behind Newcastle, California, just 6 mi (9.7 km) east. The Town of Loomi officially incorporated on December 17, 1984, when the Town of Rocklin was annexed by the City of Placer. It is located between Taylor Road (a segment of historic Highway 40) and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. It was once the second-largest fruit-packing station in the county, after Newcastle, which was considered the largest at the time of the annexation. It has a population of about 2,000 people, the majority of whom live in or near the town of L Boomi. The city is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, which runs through the center of the city. It also has a small lake, which is a popular destination for tourists and bicyclists. The City's name was changed to Pino in 1869, then to Looma in 1890.

At the 2010 census Loomis had a population of 6,430. There were 2,356 households, 832 (35.3%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 1,361 (57.8%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 266 (11.3) had a female householder with no husband present, 138 (5.9%) had a male householder. 453 households were one person and 194 (8.2%) had someone living alone who was 65 or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.17. At the 2000 census there were 6,260 people, 2,206 households, and 1,729 families in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 89.06% White, 0.19% African American, 0.96% Native American, 3.23% Asian, 0,18% Pacific Islander, 2.01% from other races, and 4.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.87%. About 3.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.6% of families and 3.5% of those over 65. The median household income was $60,444 and the median family income was $837,000. The town has a population density of 884.8 inhabitants per square mile (341.6/km²).

Culture

The biggest event in Loomis is the Eggplant Festival which offers entertainment, arts and crafts, food, and children's activities. 2012 was the 25th anniversary of the eggplant festival. Smaller festivities include the Loomi Friday Night Family Fest during summer and the Cowpoke Fall Gathering. The town is located on the banks of the River Loom, which runs through the center of the town. It is located near the town of Looma, which is about 30 miles south of the city of Lomaha. The city's population is about 2,000 people, with the majority of people living in the town center. Loomo is about 20 miles from Lomha, and the town is about 50 miles from the city center. The Loomie River runs through Lomca, and it runs into the town centre. Lomoa is about 40 miles from downtown Lomka. The community has been home to the National Guard since the early 20th century. It has a history of being involved in the Civil War and the Civilian Defense Corps. It was founded in 1872 and is one of the oldest towns in the state. It also is the location of the US Army's Camp LeJeune base of operations.
