Folsom is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 80,454 at the 2020 census. Folsom Dam was built in 1956, providing flood control and water rights for the Sacramento Valley. The city is home to Folsoms Lake College, Folsum High School, Vista del Lago High School and a historic downtown district. It is also home to the largest private employer in the Sacramento area, Intel. A few former gold-rush era towns are located within the city limits, including Prairie City, Salmon Falls, and Mormon Island (though these towns no longer exist). The city's climate is characterized by long, hot, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. The town is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The Folsome Plan Area is a planned community development area consisting of 3,250 acres (1,320 ha) south of Highway 50 set aside for additional housing, schools and parks along with office and commercial buildings. The plan allows the construction of 11,000 homes resulting in 25,000 additional residents enlarging the city of FolsOM by one-third. The area is part of the Sacramento-Arden-ArcadeRoseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city has a total area of 34 square miles (88 km²), of which, 31.9 sq miles (83 km²) of it is land and 2.4sq miles (6.2 km² of it (9.69%) is water.
History
Folsom is named for Joseph Libbey Folsom, who purchased Rancho Rio de los Americanos in 1855. The town was founded by gold miners seeking their fortune in the Sierra Nevada foothills. A few former gold-rush era towns are located within the city limits, including Prairie City, Salmon Falls, and Mormon Island. The city is home to the largest private employer in the Sacramento area, Intel. It is the terminus of the Gold Line of the Sacramento Regional Transit District's light rail service. Folsum Dam was built in 1956, providing flood control and water rights for the Sacramento Valley and created Folsoms Lake. The Folsome Powerhouse, now a National Historic Landmark, had the longest overhead run of electricity (22 miles) in the country in the early 20th century. The plan allows the construction of 11,000 homes resulting in 25,000 additional residents enlarging the city of FolsOM by one-third. The lake is an estimated 4.8 miles (7.7 km) from Granite Bay to the most southern point of Folsom Lake. It has a population of about 2,000, with the majority of residents living in the central part of the city. It was once home to a significant Chinese American community, but arsonists burned the Chinatown in March 1886, driving Chinese Americans out of town. In 1880, the Livermore family made an agreement with the state to donate land for the prison in exchange for prison labor. They planned to build a dam from the American River for a sawmill.

It is the only city in the state to have a city center on the California-Nevada border, which was established in 1891. The area is primarily made up of Folsum Lake, which is located at the center of the city. In 2000 there were 51,884 people in 17,196 households.
