San Leandro (Spanish for "St. Leander") is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. It is located in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area; between Oakland to the northwest, and Ashland, Castro Valley, and Hayward to the southeast. San Leandro was first visited by Europeans on March 20, 1772, by Spanish soldier Captain Pedro Fages and the Spanish Catholic priest Father Crespi. The city has a historical Portuguese American population dating from the 1880s, when Portuguese laborers from Hawaii or from the Azores began settling in the city. In 1960, the city was almost entirely white (99.3%), while its neighbor city of Oakland had a large African American population. By 2010, Asian Americans had become a plurality population in San Leandre, with approximately one-third of the population. The population was 91,008 as of the 2020 census. The 2010 U.S. Census reported that SanLeandro had a population of 84,950, with a density of 5,950 inhabitants per square mile (2,0941/km²/km). The racial makeup of the city in 2010 was 31,946 (37,6%) White, 669 (3,437) African American, 25,206 (8,206,7%) Native American, 6,69 (0.8%) Asian American, and 25,729 (7,737) Hispanic or Latino. In the lower elevations, an upper regionally contained aquifer is located 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 m) below the surface. Shallow groundwater is contaminated in many of the locales of the lower elevation. Contamination by gasoline compounds and heavy metals has been recorded in a number of these lower elevation areas.
History
San Leandro was first visited by Europeans on March 20, 1772, by Spanish soldier Captain Pedro Fages and the Spanish Catholic priest Father Crespi. Its name refers to Leander of Seville, a sixth-century Spanish bishop. In 1856, San Leandro became the county seat of Alameda County, but the county courthouse was destroyed there by the devastating 1868 quake on the Hayward Fault. The city has a historical Portuguese American population dating from the 1880s, when Portuguese laborers from Hawaii or from the Azores began settling in the city. In 1960, the city was almost entirely white (99.3%), while its neighbor city of Oakland had a large African American population. By 2010, Asian Americans had become a plurality population in SanLeandro, with approximately one-third of the population, with non-Hispanic Whites accounting for 27.1% of the city's population. San Leandre was an 86.4% white-non Hispanic community according in the 1970 census. The U.S. Supreme Court, in Shelley v. Kraemer, later declared such covenants unenforceable by the state. The first inhabitants of the geographic region were the ancestors of the Ohlone people, who arrived sometime between 3500 and 2500 BC. The Spanish settlers called these natives Costeños, or 'coast people,' and the English-speaking settlers called them Costanoans. During the American Civil War, Sanleandro and its neighbor, Brooklyn, fielded a California militia company, the Brooklyn Guard.
Geography and geology
The San Leandro Hills run above the city to the northeast. In the lower elevations of the city, an upper regionally contained aquifer is located 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 m) below the surface. Shallow groundwater generally flows to the west, from the foothills toward San Francisco Bay. Contamination by gasoline, volatile organic compounds and some heavy metals has been recorded in a number of these lower-elevation areas. The city is located on the San Francisco Peninsula, north of San Francisco and east of San Jose. It is located in the Bay Area's Central Coast region, east of Oakland and north of Los Angeles. It has a population of more than 100,000 and is home to a large number of Bay Area businesses, including Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. It also has a significant number of residents who live in the San Leardo area. The San Leando Cone is one of the most densely populated areas in the city. Some salt water intrusion has taken place in theSan Leandro Cone. The area has a history of being affected by earthquakes and other natural disasters, such as the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the 1906 Loma Prieta earthquake and subsequent tsunami. It was the first city in the state to be hit by a major earthquake in the United States.

The 2010 U.S. Census reported that San Leandro had a population of 84,950. The racial makeup of the city was 31,946 (37.6%) White, 10,437 (12.3%) African American, 669 (0.8%) Native American, 25,206 (29.7%) Asian, 642 (0.8) Pacific Islander, 11,295 (13.3) from other races, and 4,755 (5.6) from two or more races. Non-Hispanic Whites numbered 20,004 (23.5%). The median income for a household in the city in the 2000 census was $33,081. Males had a median income of $41,157, compared to $23,895 for females. About 4.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.3% of those under 18 and 6.5% of people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.74, and the average family size was 3.36. The median age was 39.3 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.1 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, There were 89.4 males. The city has a population density of 5,423.8 inhabitants per square mile (2,094.1/km²) There were 32,419 housing units at an average density of 2,069.9 per squaremile (799.2/ km²), of which 30,717 were occupied, of which 17,667 (57.5%) were owner-occupied.
Economy
San Leandro has long been home to many food-processing operations. The city has five major shopping centers: the Bayfair Center, Westgate Center, Greenhouse Shopping Center, Marina Square Center, and Pelton Plaza. The Zero Net Energy Center, which opened in 2013, is a 46,000-square-foot (4,300 m2) electrician training facility. According to the San Leandro's 2015 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the top employers in the city are: OSIsoft, 21st Amendment Brewery, Begier Buick, and a Coca-Cola plant. In 2012, the city was awarded a $2.1 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to add 7.5 miles to the fiber-optic network. By 2014, the network expansion was completed, bringing the total length of fiber in the City to over 18 miles. The network is capable of transmitting at up to 10Gbit/s and is currently only available to business users. In 2015, Lucky's flagship store opened in SanLeandro. The store is located in the former headquarters of Maxwell House, where the Yuban brand was produced from 1949 until 2015, when it was closed as part of a cost-cutting plan instituted by parent company Kraft Foods. It is now owned and operated by Lucky's, which also operates as a zero-energy building. The company's website is located at www.lucky.com. In 2013, the company announced that it would be closing its coffee roasting plant in Sanleandro.
Education
San Leandro is home to three high schools: San Leandro High School, Pacific High School and Marina High School. In the latter part of the 20th century, the city was home to a total of 3 high schools. The school district was forced to close schools in the 1980s due to declining enrollment. In 2018, the California State Department of Education selected James Madison Elementary as one of 21 elementary schools across Alameda County. The district was named the College Board Advanced Placement District of the Year for being a national leader among medium-sized school districts in access to AP Exam courses while simultaneously improving performance. In 2010, a separate campus one block from the main campus was opened for 9th grade students and is named after the civil rights leader Fred T. Korematsu, who had many connections to SanLeandro and lived close to the city. In 2012, the voters approved the Measure M $50 million construction bond for the renovation of Burrell Field and the baseball fields. The board of the San Leandre Unified School District is composed of Monique Tate (Area 1), Christian Rodriguez (Area 2), Evelyn Gonzalez (Area 3), Leo Sheridan (Area 4), Diana J. Prola (Area 5), James Aguilar (Area 6), and Peter Oshinski (At-Large) The district is one of 447 school districts across the U.S. and Canada that achieved on the annual AP District Honor Roll list that were selected based on an analysis of three years of academic data.
Government
San Leandro is a charter city with a Mayor-Council-Manager form of government. Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter was elected in November 2018. The City Manager is Fran Robustelli. In 2017, San Leandro had 45,257 registered voters with 26,421 registered as Democrats, 5,271 (11.6%) registered as Republicans, and 11,723 (25.9%) were decline to state voters. The city hall was built in 1939. The mayor is elected by all voters in the city using instant-runoff voting. The Council members must reside within the district they represent. The council members are Deborah Cox (District 1), Bryan Azevedo (District 2), Victor Aguilar, Jr. (District 3), Fred Simon (District 4), Corina Lopez (District 5), and Pete Ballew (District 6). The city is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and has a population of about 3,000 people. It is located on the Bay Area Peninsula and has an estimated population of 3,200. The Mayor is chosen by a vote of the city's residents, and the City Council members are elected by a majority of the voters in their respective districts. It has a mayor and six Council members, with the City Manager serving as the city manager. In 2018, the mayor was elected to a four-year term, and she was re-elected for a second term in November. Transportation
San Leandro is served by the Interstate 880, 580 and 238 freeways. Public transportation is provided by the Bay Area Rapid Transit BART District. San Leandro LINKS provides free bus shuttle service for the western part of the city. A senior-oriented local bus service, Flex Shuttle, also operates within the city, as does East Bay Paratransit, which provides shuttle type transportation to residents with disabilities. The city is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and is located near the East Oakland and Hayward areas of the Bay area. It is located on the eastern edge of the Oakland Peninsula, and is on the northern tip of the East Bay Peninsula, near the San Pablo Peninsula and the San Diego County line. It has a population of around 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in the central and western parts of the town. It also has a large percentage of residents who live outside of the downtown area, in East Oakland, Hayward, and the East San Francisco area. The majority of the population lives in the eastern portion of the City, which is located along East 14th Street (SR-185), which is a major thoroughfare in downtown and continues towards East Oakland. It was also the site of the first ferry to San Francisco, which opened in 1868. The San Francisco Giants won the World Series of baseball in the late 19th century, and the Golden State Warriors won the Stanley Cup in the 1980s and 1990s. The Giants also won the Super Bowl in 1988 and 1988. The Golden State Giants won their first Super Bowl title in 1988, and their second in 1988. They also won their third title in 1989. The last time the city won a World Series game was in 1992, when they beat the San Jose Earthquakes 3-1. The game was the first of its kind to be held in San Francisco since the city was founded in 1876.

The City of San Leandro maintains and services 16 other parks throughout the city, all of which are available for use by residents and visitors alike. The Fairmont Ridge Staging Area is the location of the Children's Memorial Grove, which consists of an Oak grove and a stone circle, with annual plaques listing the names of all children who have died as a result of violence in Alameda County.
