Monterey is a city on the southern edge of Monterey Bay on the U.S. state of California's Central Coast. Founded on June 3, 1770, it functioned as the capital of Alta California under both Spain (1804-1821) and Mexico (1822-1846) During this period, Monterey hosted California's first theater, public building, public library, publicly-funded school, printing-press, and newspaper. The city occupies a land area of 8.466 sq mi (21.93 km²) and the city hall is at 26 feet (8 m) above sea level. Monterey and the surrounding area have attracted artists since the late 19th-century, and many celebrated painters and writers have lived in the area. Until the 1950s there was an abundant fishery in the Monterey Peninsula, and the area was known as the "Fisherman's Wharf" of the world. The current bay's name was given by Sebastián Vizcaíno in 1602, and named it Puerto de Monterrey, in honor of the viceroy of New Spain. Some variants of the city's name are recorded as Monte Rey and Monterey. The 2020 census recorded a population of 30,218, with the majority of residents living in Monterey County, California, where the city is located. It was originally the only port of entry for all taxable goods in California. In 1846, during the MexicanAmerican War of 1846-1848, the United States Flag was raised over the Customs House. After Mexico ceded California to the U.,S. at the end of the war, Montereys hosted California’s first constitutional convention in 1849.

History

Monterey is the primary city name, but also Del Rey Oaks are acceptable city names or spellings, Point Sur, Presidio Of Monterey on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is City of Monterey. Long before the arrival of Spanish explorers, the Rumsen Ohlone tribe inhabited the area now known as Monterey. The current bay's name was given by Sebastián Vizcaíno in 1602. The Spanish did not make Monterey Bay into a settled permanent harbor before the eighteenth century because it was too exposed to rough ocean currents and winds. The original church was destroyed by fire in 1789 and replaced by the present stone structure. The city was originally the only port of entry for all taxable goods in California. All shipments into California by sea were required to go through the Custom House, the oldest governmental building in the state. It is the only existing presidio chapel in California and the only surviving building from the original Monterey Presidio. The cathedral is the oldest continuously operating parish and the smallest cathedral along with St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, Louisiana, serving with the St. Charles Borromeo Chapel. It was completed in 1794 and rededicated to the patronage of the Indian Indian tribe of Saint Charles Borromo. The church is also the oldest (and smallest) serving with St Louis Cathedral, New Orleans. It has been named after the 4th Count of Monterrei, who was then the viceroy of New Spain, and his father (the Fourth Count of Monte Rey) Some variants of the city's name are recorded as Monte Rey and Monterey, and it is also known as Puerto de Monterrey.

Geography

The city is in a moderate to high seismic risk zone, the principal threat being the active San Andreas Fault approximately 26 miles (42 km) to the east. Monterey Bay's maximum credible tsunami for a 100-year interval has been calculated as a wave nine feet (2.7 m) high. There is a variety of natural habitat in Monterey: littoral zone and sand dunes; closed-cone pine forest; and Monterey Cypress. There are no dairy farms in the city of Monterey; the semi-hard cheese known as Monterey Jack originated in nearby Carmel Valley, California, and is named after businessman and land speculator David Jacks. The California sea otter, a threatened subspecies, inhabits the localMonterey Bay marine environment. The rare San Joaquin kit fox is found in Montere's oak-forest and chaparral habitats. The city is adjacent to the MontereyBay National Marine Sanctuary, a federally protected ocean area extending 276 mi (444 km) along the coast. The most intense source of noise pollution is the Montere State Route 1. The noise pollution has been mapped to define the areas of the population exposed to significant levels of noise and to ascertain the principal sources of the noise pollution. In the northern part of the city, a moderate number of people are exposed to noise levels in excess of 60 dB at the Community Equivalent Level (CNEL) on the Noise Equivalent level scale. The highest level of noise is found near Del Monte Boulevard, which is exposed to 1,600 people or more.

Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported that Monterey had a population of 27,810. There were 13,382 housing units at an average density of 1,586.0 per square mile (612.4/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 80.8% White, 10.9% Hispanic, 7.4% Asian, 2.5% African American, 0.6% Native American and 0.3% Pacific Islander. The median income for a household in Monterey was $49,109, and the median family income was $58,757. Monterey is home to the U.S. Open, the world's largest open-air museum, which is open to the public every day of the year. It is also the home of the Monterey Bay Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that promotes environmental awareness and education. The Monterey Peninsula Foundation is also based in the city, and has a mission to promote environmental awareness, education and awareness of climate change. The city's motto is: "The World's Largest Open-Air Museum, the World's Most Beautiful Open-air Museum, The World's Greatest Open- Air Museum, and The World’s Most Beautiful Outdoor Museum, all in one Place, Monterey, California" The city has a reputation for being one of the most beautiful places in the United States, with a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also has the highest per capita income in the state, at $31,258.

Economy

According to the City's 2015 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the top private-sector employers in the city are (in alphabetical order): Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, and Mapleton Communications. Additional military facilities in Monterey include the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, and the United States Naval Research Laboratory Monterey. The city is home to the U.S. Navy's Monterey Naval Research Lift Station, which is based in the Monterey Bay area. Monterey is also the home of the California Air National Guard, which has a base at Monterey International Airport. The City's top public- sector employers are (in alphabetical order):  Monterey Peninsula Unified School District, and Mapleton Communications. The top public sector employers are (in alleged to be the California Air National Defense Station and the California Air Navy Research Station at Monterey, which is based in the San Francisco Bay area, are (allegedly based in Monterey). The city's top private-sector employees are (in alphabetical  order): Mont Peninsula Universities and Colleges and Monterey County Government officials, including the City's police and fire departments. The City's top public-sector employer is (in Alphabetical Order): The City Police and Fire Department of Monterey; the city's highest-paid public-sector employees are the police and fire fighters and paramedics.

Arts and culture

Monterey is the home of the Monterey Museum of Art, its annex museum La Mirada and the Salvador Dalí Museum. The city is also the site of numerous waterfront arts and crafts festivals held in the Custom House Plaza at the top of Fisherman's Wharf. The Monterey Jazz Festival began in 1958, presenting such artists as Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Billie Holiday, and now claims to be "the longest running jazz festival in the world" In June 1967 the city was the venue of theMonterey Pop Festival. It was notable as hosting the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix and The Who, as well as the first public performances of Janis Joplin and Otis Redding. The building in which the first paid public dramatic entertainment in California occurred is located in Monterey and is called, appropriately, "California's First Theater". In 1847, a sailor named Jack Swan began construction on an adobe building at the corner of Pacific St. and Scott Ave, near the Pacific House and Fisherman’s Wharf, for use as a theater. In 1896, Swan died and the building was abandoned until 1906 when it was purchased by the California Historic Landmarks League, who deeded it to the State of California. The theater was destroyed by fire on December 31, 1959, and re-opened in a new location on Alvarado Street (formerly "The Monterey Opera House") which was renamed "The Old Monterey Theater" in 1960.

Sports

The Monterey Amberjacks are a professional baseball team that competes in the independent Pecos League. The Monterey Bay Derby Dames is a non-profit, amateur flat track roller derby league created by skaters for skaters in Monterey County, California. The head coach is Frank Yallop.Monterey Bay FC is an expansion team for the USL Championship league, the 2nd division of professional soccer in the US. The team will start play in March 2022 at Cardinale Stadium in Seaside, California, and play in the U.S. Premier League. They are a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. They play their home games at Sollecito Ballpark. The club is not affiliated with Major League Baseball or Minor League Baseball. It is the only team in the league not to be affiliated with a major league or minor league. It has won the California State Triple-A championship three times in a row, most recently in 2010 and 2011. It also won a California State League title in 2011 and 2012. It was the first team to win a California state league title in the history of the league. The last team to do so was the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010. It won the league in 2012 and 2013. It's the first time the team has ever won a state league championship in the United States, and the second time in its history to win the title in 2014 and 2015. They have won the state championship in each of the last three years.

Government

Monterey is governed by a mayor and four city council members, all elected by the public. The city provides base maintenance support services for the Presidio of Monterey and the Naval Postgraduate School. Monterey is represented on the Monterey County Board of Supervisors by Supervisor Mary Adams. In the U.S. House of Representatives, the city is part of California's 20th congressional district, represented by Democrat Jimmy Panetta. The mayor is Clyde Roberson and the cityCouncil members are Dan Albert Jr., Alan Haffa, Ed Smith, and Tyller Williamson. The "Monterey Model" is now being adopted by communities across the country, including San Francisco and Los Angeles. The City of Montereys is in the California State Legislature in the 17th Senate District and the 29th Assembly District. The Monterey Model reduces maintenance costs by millions of dollars and supports a continued military presence in Monterey. It is also known as the "Montereys Model" because of its innovative partnership with the military and the City of San Francisco in the 1970s and 1980s. It was the first city in the state to offer traffic engineering, inspections, construction engineering and project management. It also provides street, park, and building maintenance services. The Mayor of Mont Español is Clyde Roberson, and the City Council members are Dan Albert Jr. and Alan Haffa; the City Council members are Ed Smith and Tyller Williamson; the Mayor is Clyde Roberson.

Infrastructure

The city is serviced by California State Route 1, also known as the Cabrillo Highway, as it runs along the coastline of the rest of Monterey Bay to the north and Big Sur to the south. Local bus service is provided by Monterey-Salinas Transit. Monterey Regional Airport connects the city to the large metropolitan areas in California, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada. The Del Monte train station was served until 1971, when Amtrak took over intercity train service and the Del Monte was discontinued. The city is served by the Monterey Peninsula Airport, which is located on the east coast of the Bay Area. It is also connected by U.S. Route 101 at Salinas and to Pacific Grove. The Monterey Beach Pier is a popular tourist attraction. The San Francisco Bay Bridge is a major tourist attraction in the city. The Santa Cruz Mountains are also a popular destination, with the Santa Cruz mountains to the east and the Santa Catalina Mountains to the west. The town of Salinas is home to the San Luis Obispo County Fair, one of the largest fairs in the United States. It was founded in 1875. The City of Salina was founded on the banks of the Santa Lucia River in 1881. The first city to be named after a saint was Santa Cruz, which dates back to the 12th century. The name of the town is still used today as a tourist destination. It has been the site of many festivals, including the annual Monterey Days.

The Comfort Index (higher=better) is 79, where higher values mean a more pleasant climate. The Comfort Index measure recognizes that humidity by itself isn't the problem. (Have you noticed nobody ever complains about the weather being 'cold and humid?) It's in the summertime that we notice the humidity the most, when it's hot and muggy.
