Marina was incorporated in 1975 and is the newest city in the Monterey area. History

In July 1994, the California State University began its first academic year, and barracks were soon transformed into dorms. The first joint Army and Navy maneuvers held in 1940 were held in the area. The city's history is intertwined with that of Fort Ord, which was decommissioned in 1991 and formally closed after troop reassignment in 1994. Parks and recreation

The Labor Day Parade & Family Festival held the Saturday before the official holiday pays homage to the significant military history of the town. Fort Ord Dunes State Park is a popular place for horseback riding, hiking, fishing and cycling. The tall sand dunes at Marina beaches provide optimal conditions for paragliding and hang gliding. A Marina based skydiving center has become a popular attraction because of its high altitude skydives and proximity to the beach. The annual Otter Fest in August welcomes back students, staff, and faculty to CSU, Monterey Bay. It began in 2010 with a Key to the City presentation to the campus president. The town is home to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, which has a base in Marina and a fleet of ships in the harbor. The city is also home to a number of wineries, restaurants, and other businesses. The mayor of Marina is a former mayor of the city of Seaside, California, who served in the California National Guard in the 1980s and 1990s. The current mayor is a current member of the Board of Supervisors of the City of Marina and served as mayor from 2003 to 2007. The Marina Police Department has been in charge of the Marina Harbor Police Department for the past 10 years. The police department has been responsible for the protection of the coastline since the 1950s.

Marina Municipal Airport is a general aviation airport that is owned by the City of Marina. Skydive Monterey Bay conducts skydiving and parachuting activities on the south east side of the airport.
