Corona (Spanish for "Crown") is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 157,136, up from 152,374 at the 2010 census. Downtown Corona is approximately 48 miles (77 kilometers) southeast of Downtown Los Angeles and 95 miles (153 km) north-northwest of San Diego. The city derived its name (and its nickname, "The Circle City") from the unique layout of its streets, with a standard grid enclosed by the circular Grand Boulevard, 2.75 miles (4.43 km) in circumference. It is one of the most residential cities in the Inland Empire, but also has a large industrial portion on the northern half, being the headquarters of companies such as Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, Monster Beverage Corporation, and supercar manufacturer Saleen. Prior to the 1980s, Corona was largely an agricultural community, dominated by citrus ranches and dairy farms. The town of Corona was once the "Lemon Capital of the World". A museum there presents the lemon's former role in the local economy. In the 20th century, Corona has become a popular destination for celebrities, with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz playing golf at the Cresta Verde Golf Course in the northeastern section of the city. Corona is located at the upper end of the Santa Ana River Canyon, a significant pass through theSanta Ana Mountains. It was founded at the height of the Southern California citrus boom in 1886.

Etymology

Corona is the primary city name, but also Eastvale are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Corona. Corona is Spanish for crown or wreath. Originally called South Riverside, citizens wanted to distinguish their city from the larger city of Riverside to the north. The name Corona was chosen to play upon a unique feature of the city, the one-mile diameter drive that circled the center of the town. A number of different names were considered when it came time to incorporate the city but Corona was the most popular. The city was incorporated on July 1, 1961. The first mayor of Corona was elected on July 2, 1961, and the first city hall was opened on July 3, 1962. The last mayor of Riverside was elected in 1974, on July 25, 1978, and was re-elected on July 31, 2008. The current mayor is Ana Navarrette, who took office on January 1, 2010, and has served as mayor since January 2013. The City of Corona is located in the San Diego County, California, United States. In 2002, the city government considered an autonomous government from Riverside County because the city and some residents were dissatisfied with how services were handled by other areas in the county. A proposed 10-mile (16 km) automobile and rail tunnel under Santiago Peak to connect Interstate 5 and SR 55 in Corona with Interstate 5 in Orange County to reduce commuter traffic on the crowded 91 has shelved indefinitely, this concept has also been shelved. Corona experiences a warm Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification: CSa) and has mild to cool winters and hot summers. Most of the rainfall (as in all of Southern California) occurs during winter and early spring. Snowfall within city limits is rare. Snow flurries will occasionally fall, usually once every other year, but it very rarely snows to the point where it accumulates. The nearby Santa Ana Mountains receive a dusting of snow a few times each winter. The city has a total area of 38.9 square miles (101 km²), of which 38.8 sq miles (100 km²) of it is land and 0.1sq miles (0.26 km²") of it, or 0.27%, is water. It is located in western Riverside County, east of Orange County, and east of San Diego. It has a population of 2,827, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The top job creator in Corona is the city's police chief, who has been in his job for more than 30 years. The police chief has been fired three times in the last five years, the most recent in 2008. The chief was also fired in 2007 for a DUI offense. The mayor has been re-elected to a second term in office, the third time in his career, and the fourth time in the mayor's job was in his second term. The current mayor is a former mayor of the city, who was elected in 2000 and served two terms in the 1990s, the second in his third term, the fourth in his fourth term, and a fifth in his fifth term.

Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported that Corona had a population of 152,374. The racial makeup of Corona was 90,925 (59.7%) White (40.1% Non-Hispanic White), 8,934 (5.9%) African American, 1,153 (0.8%) Native American, 16,205 (10.6%) Asian, 552 (0.4) Pacific Islander, 28,003 (18.4%) from other races, and 7,759 (5.1%) from two or more races. 33.7% of Corona's population are Mexican-American. Middle Eastern/North African (MENA) people made up 2.5% of the population. There were 47,174 housing units at an average density of 1,211.8 per square mile (467.9/km²), of which 30,210 (67.2%) were owner-occupied, and 14,740 (32.8) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 2.3%; the rental vacancy ratewas 5.3%. 103,17067.7 people lived in owner- occupied housing units and 48,693 people in rental housing units in 2009-2013. Corona is located in California's 42nd congressional district, represented by Republican Ken Calvert. California is represented by Democrats Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla in the U.S. Senate. In the California State Legislature, Corona is in the 31st Senate District and the 60th Assembly District. In Riverside County Board of Supervisors, Corona is in the Second District, represented by Karen Spiegel. The city is located on the banks of the San Jacinto River, which flows into the San Joaquin River and the San Diego River. The river is known as the "Corona River" and was once a popular destination for the city's residents. It is now considered one of the most scenic rivers in the state, along with the San Francisco Bay and the Santa Catalina River. It has been the site of several major construction projects, including the construction of a new freeway and a new airport in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Neighborhoods

Downtown District is the oldest area of the city by far. The area north of Grand Boulevard Circle centered around N Main St, named North Main Street District, underwent drastic rebranding, redevelopment, and repair beginning in 2017. Historic South Main Street Palms District is a long stretch of varying species of palms that were planted and integrated into the landscaping plan for South Corona in the early 20th century. Metro at Main is a large mixed-use development featuring apartments atop retail with additional retail along the property. It is a commuter community due to its close proximity to Metrolink's Corona - North Main Station, and both SR 91 and I-15 freeways. It includes all of the houses and businesses along S Main St between Olive St and Chase Dr. It also includes portions of the neighborhoods of Civic Center and Circle City along with the entirety of GBHD. The Eastside, Westside, and Center City neighborhoods are all part of the Downtown District. The Westside is a mix of the Eastside and the Westside neighborhoods. The Center City neighborhood is the largest in the city, and is home to much of the business and residential activity in the downtown area. The Arts Alive Council is a non-profit organization created with the purpose to "foster, promote, and increase the public knowledge and appreciation of the arts and cultural activities in the greater Corona Area" Members include the Corona Symphony Orchestra, Circle City Chorale, Christian Arts and Theater, and Corona Dance Academy.
