Anaheim is a city in northern Orange County, California, part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 346,824, making it the most populous city in Orange County. Anaheim was founded by 50 German-Americans in 1857 and incorporated as the second city in Los Angeles County on March 18, 1876. The city's name is a blend of Ana, after the nearby Santa Ana River, and German -heim meaning "home", which is also a common Germanic place name compound. The AnaheimSanta Ana edge city includes the Disneyland Resort, with two theme parks, multiple hotels, and its retail district. The Platinum Triangle, a neo-urban redevelopment district surrounding Angel Stadium, is planned to be populated with mixed-use streets and high-rises. The Los Angeles Angels baseball team and the Anaheim Ducks ice hockey club are based in Anaheim. Anaheim is the home of the Anaheim Convention Center, which is the largest convention center in the United States. It is the 10th-most populous city. in California, and the 56th most populous. city in the U.S. in terms of land area. Anaheim's city limits extend almost the full width of Orange County from Cypress in the west to the Riverside County line, encompassing a diverse range of neighborhoods. In the west, mid-20th-century tract houses predominate. For 25 years, the area was the largest wine producer in California. However in 1884, a disease infected the grape vines and the first home was built there.

Toponymy

Anaheim's name is a blend of Ana, after the nearby Santa Ana River, and German -heim meaning "home" It is also a common Germanic place name compound (compare Trondheim in Norway and many place names in Germany). The city is named after the town of the same name in the same region of Germany. It is located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, in the north-west of Germany, and in the province of Hesse. The city's name means "home", and is a compound of the German words "heim" (home) and "an" (pronounced "an"). It is named for the Santa Ana river, which runs through the city. The town is also known as "Auschwitz" or "Ausschwitz" because of its proximity to the German city of Ausschwitz in the nearby province of Rhine-Holland. It also means "town" in German, and "auschwitz" means "place" in English. The name is also used in the city's coat-of-arms, as well as in the town's coat of arms, as a sign of respect for the area's history. It means "a place of refuge" in the local Germanic language. It was also used as the name of a town in the region of Henschendorf, Germany, which is now in the German state of Hessen-Dortmund. It has also been used as a name for a city in Germany in the past, and is still used today.

History

The city of Anaheim was founded in 1857 by 50 German-Americans who were residents of San Francisco. For 25 years, the area was the largest wine producer in California. The area was once dominated by orange groves and the landowners who farmed them. In the early 20th century, Anaheim was dominated by the Ku Klux Klan, which represented a rising politically oriented group of non-ethnic Germans. In 1924, members of the Anaheim City Council were elected on a platform of political reform. The city is now home to Disneyland, the world's largest theme park, and other tourist attractions. The Anaheim area is home to the Tongva people, who have lived in the area since 3500 BCE. The Tongva village at Anaheim was called Hutuukuga, which means "home by the Santa Ana River" in German. The town's name was later changed to Annaheim, which is now the name of the city's largest park, Anaheim City Hall, which was built in the 1960s. The current mayor of Anaheim is Eric Garcetti, a former mayor of Los Angeles, who was elected in 1998. The mayor was a former saloon keeper, and served as mayor from 1998 to 2002. The City of Anaheim's first park superintendent was Rudolph Boysen, who created a hybrid berry which Walter Knott later named Knott Berry Park. The park was later named after him, as was a park in East Anaheim named after Rudy Boysen. The first city hall was opened in 1903, and the city was named after the former mayor, who served from 1903 to 1954.

Geography

Anaheim is located at 33°5010N 117°5323W and is approximately 25 miles (40 km) southeast of downtown Los Angeles. The city roughly follows the east-to-west route of the 91 Freeway from the Orange-Riverside county border to Buena Park. Anaheim is bordered on the south by Stanton, Garden Grove, and Orange (from west to east) Various unincorporated areas of Orange County also abut the city, including Anaheim Island. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 50.8 square miles (132 km²) of which (1.92%) is water. Like many other South Coast cities, Anaheim maintains a borderline hot semi-arid climate (Köppen BSh), a little short of a Mediterranean climate. The record high temperature in Anaheim is 115 °F (46 °C) on July 6, 2018 and the record low temperature is 30 °F [1 °C] on February 15, 1990, and January 30, 2002. The contiguous commercial development from the Disney Resort through into the cities of Orange, Garden Grove and Santa Ana has collectively been termed the AnaheimSanta Ana edge city. The City recognizes several districts, including the Anaheim Resort (the area surrounding Disneyland), Anaheim Canyon (an industrial area north of California State Route 91 and east of California state Route 57), and the Platinum Triangle (the areas surrounding Angel Stadium). Anaheim Hills also maintains a distinct identity.

Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported that Anaheim had a population of 336,265. The racial makeup of Anaheim was: White (27.5% non-Hispanic White alone), 80,705 (24.0%) from other races, and 49,857 (14.8%) Asian (4.4% Vietnamese, 3.6% Filipino, 2.0% Korean, 1.4%) Pacific Islander. The census reported that 332,708 people (98.9% of the population) lived in households, 2,020 (0.6%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 1,537 (0.5%) were institutionalized. There were 104,237 housing units at an average density of 2,051.5 per square mile (792.1/km²), of which 47,677 were owner-occupied, and 50,617 were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.7%; the rental vacancy ratewas 7.2%. 160,843 people (47.8%), 171,865 people (51.1%), and 171,000 people (50.1%) living in rental housing units. The median household income was $59,627, with 15.6 percent of the residents living below the federal poverty line. The average household size was 3.38, with 74,294 families (75.6%), and the average family size was3.79. Anaheim's population was 328,014 as of the census of 2000.

Economy

Anaheim's income is based on a tourism economy. The Disneyland Resort contributes about $4.7 billion annually to Southern California's economy. Another source of tourism is the Anaheim Convention Center, which is home to many important national conferences. The Anaheim Canyon business park makes up 63% of Anaheim's industrial space and is the largest industrial district in Orange County.Several notable companies have corporate offices and/or headquarters within Anaheim. According to the city's 2021 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, the top employers in the city are: The Walt Disney Company, Disneyland Resort, Anaheim Plaza, and Anaheim Town Square. The city's economy is heavily dependent on tourism and conventions, especially theme park tourists and conventiongoers. It is one of the three largest such clusters inOrange County, together with the South Coast PlazaJohn Wayne Airport edge city and Irvine Spectrum. The Disney area stretches from the Disney area east to the Santa Ana River, south into the cities of Garden Grove, Orange and Santa Ana collectively, this area has been labeled the AnaheimSanta Ana edge city. It also includes the Anaheim GardenWalk lifestyle center (440,000 ft2 of retail, dining and entertainment located in the Anaheim Resort), as well as the Anaheim Plaza shopping area (347,000ft2) and the Anaheim Townsquare shopping area in East Anaheim (374,000 feet2) It is also home to the second-largest business park in Orange county, the Anaheim Canyon Business Park (63% of the city) The city also has the third-largest industrial space in the county, with the Anaheim Industrial Park (62% of city) making up the majority of Anaheim Canyon.

Attractions

Anaheim is home to the U.S. men's and women's national volleyball teams. The Anaheim Convention Center is the home of the Anaheim/OC Walk of Stars. The Grove of Anaheim, formerly the Sun Theater, formerly Tinseltown Studios, is located in the city's downtown area. La Palma Park is located near the Anaheim Hills Golf Course and Angel Stadium of Anaheim. The Disneyland theme park is located just outside of downtown Anaheim in the Anaheim suburb of California. The Disney California Adventure Park is also located in Anaheim's Downtown Disney area. The Honda Center is located at the center of Anaheim's entertainment district. It is also home to a number of other sports and entertainment venues, including the Anaheim Ducks and the Honda Center. The Orange County Zoo is located nearby in the town of Anaheim and is the site of the Orange County Ice Hockey Association's Winter Olympics. The California State University of Anaheim is also in Anaheim and hosts the Anaheim Winter Olympics in the winter of 2010. The University of California, Los Angeles has a campus in downtown Anaheim called the Anaheim City Center, which opened in 2010. It was the first major college campus in the state of California to open in the 1980s and 1990s. The city also has its own version of the Disneyland resort, the Disneyland California Resort, which was built in the late 1990s and opened in the early 2000s. In the late 2000s, the city also added a second theme park, the Anaheim Disney Resort, to the Disneyland system. It opened in 2008.

Sports teams

Anaheim sued Angels Baseball LP in Orange County Superior Court, and a jury trial was completed in early February 2006. Anaheim appealed the court decision with the California Court of Appeal in May 2006. In December 2008, the Appeals Court upheld the February 2006 Decision and ruled in favor of Angels Baseball. In January 2009, the Anaheim City Council voted not to appeal the court case any further, bringing an end to the four-year legal dispute. The team moved to Springfield, Massachusetts and was renamed for the 2009-2010 season. The Los Angeles Rams played in Anaheim in Anaheim Stadium from 1980 through 1994 before moving to St. Louis, Missouri. Los Angeles Kiss played at Honda Center from 2014 to 2016. Anaheim Bullfrogs played in the RHI from 1993 to 1997 and 1999, winning the Murphy Cup Championship twice. Anaheim Amigos played at the Anaheim Convention Center during the 196768 Season, then moved to Los Angeles. California Surf of the now defunct North American Soccer League played from 1978 to 1981. The Anaheim Splash, played from 1994 to 1997 in the Continental Indoor Soccer League (ICL) The Anaheim Oranges played in 1978 in the World Team Tennis League (WTL). The Anaheim Piranhas played in 1994 and 1995 in the Arena Football League (AFL) and in 1996 and 1999 in the American Hockey League (AHL) The  Anaheim Pirates played from 1996 to 1998 in the AHL. The  Los Angeles Clippers played select games in Anaheim at Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim from 1994 through 1999.

Government and politics

As of October 22, 2018, Anaheim has 141,549 registered voters. Of those, 58,411 are registered Democrats, 39,885 are registered Republicans, and 37,877 (26.76%) have declined to state a political party. City government operates under a councilmanager government. Legislative authority is vested in a city council of seven nonpartisan members, who hire a professional city manager to oversee day-to-day operations. The mayor serves as the presiding officer of the city council in a first among equals role. Under the city's term limits, an individual may serve a maximum of two terms as a cityCouncil member and two term as the mayor. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Anaheim is split among three Congressional districts: 39th, 45th, and 46th districts. On the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Anaheim Hills lies in the 3rd District and the remainder of Anaheim lying in the 4th District. The current city council consists of: Ashleigh Aitken (since 2022),Jose Diaz, District 1 (since 2020), and Natalie Meeks, District 6 (since 2022) The current mayor of Anaheim is Ashleigh Aitken, who has been in office since 2012. The city is located in the Central Coast region of Orange County, California, and has a population of 1.2 million people. It is one of the most conservative major cities in the United States, but in recent years it has been moving leftward. In 2014, the city placed two measures on the November 2014 ballot. Measure L proposed that council members be elected by district instead of at large. Measure M proposed to increase the number of council seats from five to seven.

Infrastructure

Anaheim Public Utilities is the only municipal owned water and electric utility in Orange County. The utility is regulated and governed locally by the City Council. Anaheim has decided to bury power lines along major transportation corridors, converting its electricity system for aesthetic and reliability reasons. To minimize the impact on customer bills, undergrounding is taking place slowly over a period of 50 years, funded by a 4% surcharge on electric bills. Disneyland Resort has its own Fire Department, though it does rely on the Anaheim Fire Department for support, and for Paramedic Services. Law enforcement is provided by the Anaheim Police Department. Ambulance service is provided to the Disneyland Resort by CareAmbulance Service. The Anaheim Public Utilities Board, made up of Anaheim residents, advises the city Council on major utility issues. The City Council has the power to approve or disapprove of any bill that is submitted to the board. The Public Utilities board has the right to veto any bills that are submitted to it that are not in the best interests of the city or its residents. The board has a maximum penalty of $1,000 per year for violations of the Public Utilities Act of 1998. The city's water and electricity rates are set by the Orange County Water Authority, which has a monopoly on the water supply in the city. The water rate is set by a formula that is based on the cost of electricity. The average water rate in Anaheim is $2.50 per gallon. The rate for Orange County is $3.75 per cubic meter.
