San Dimas (Spanish for "Saint Dismas") is a city in Los Angeles County, California. At the 2020 census, its population was 34,924. It historically took its name from San Dimas Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains above the northern section of present-day SanDimas. The area was originally developed in 1837 with the Mexican land grant from Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado to Ygnacio Palomares and Ricardo Vejar for the Rancho San Jose, then in Alta California. It later became known as La Cienega Mud Springs, so named because of local mud springs that created a riparian marsh and healing place. The Sunkist name originated here, first spelled "Sunkissed". Oranges were the major crop and business in San DimAs until the mid-20th century. The city has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with no average monthly temperatures above 71 °F (22 °C) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has an area of 15.4 sq mi, of which 0.39 sq mi (1.0 km²) is covered by water. History
The first known European exploration of the area was in 1774, when Juan Bautista de Anza passed through on the first overland expedition of Las Californias. The area was originally developed in 1837 with the Mexican land grant to Ygnacio Palomares and Ricardo Vejar for the Rancho San Jose, then in Alta California. It later became known as La Cienega Mud Springs, so named because of local mud springs that created a riparian marsh and healing place. The Sunkist name originated here, first spelled "Sunkissed". Oranges were the major crop and business in San Dimas until the mid-20th century. In the 1990s, the Miss Rodeo California State Pageant was run by A. F. "Shorty" Feldbush and various other city volunteers. The week-long pageant was held in conjunction with the city's Western Days and Rodeos, until the pageant moved to its new home in central California. In 1971, the SanDimas Golf Course was purchased. In 1972, San Dimos Community Hospital opened its 92-bed facility. In 1981, the San Dimas Swim and Racquet Club was built next to SanDimos High School. The city was incorporated as a city in 1960, and is now known for its Western art, small-town feel, and equestrian qualities. It is located in the San Gabriel Valley, in the foothills of the San Francisco Peaks.

It is located near Cinnamon Falls, which is roughly parallel to the Arrow Highway.

The 2020 United States Census reported that the population of San Dimas was 34,924 people with 11,396 households. There were a total of 13,033 housing units. The racial makeup of the city was 49.5% White (40.8% Non-Hispanic White) Hispanic or Latino residents, of any race, made up 37.0% of the population. The average person living in the city took 33.3 minutes to travel to work. 74.9% of those persons drove alone, 11.2% carpooled, 1.7% used a form of public transportation, and 8.4% worked from home. The median income for a family with a married couple present in the household was $124,368 and for families, in general, was $110,969. The city is home to the Pacific Railroad Museum and the Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park. The San Dimas Dog Park is one of California's largest dog parks. The city is also home to Magellan Navigation, a pioneer in the global positioning system industry, and Curative, a healthcare startup known for its scalable COVID-19 testing and vaccinations during the pandemic. It is also the home of Raging Waters Los Angeles, one of the largest water parks in the U.S., as well as a number of other attractions and businesses. The town's name comes from the former ATSF San DimAs Depot on Bonita Ave., which was built in the 1930s and 1940s. It was named after the San Dimas neighborhood of San Dimas, California, which was once part of Los Angelenos and was known as "San Dims" The city's name also comes from "San Dimas," the name of the city's first post office, which opened in 1858. It's also known as the "City of the Giants" because of its large number of historic buildings, many of which date back to the early 20th century. It also is the site of the first public library in the United States, founded in 1859 by the California City Commissioner of Public Works. It has been named after a former mayor, Frank Gonzales, who was first elected to the city council in 1888. The current mayor, Julian Zelizer, was elected in 1998.

In the California State Legislature, San Dimas is in the 25th Senate District, represented by Democrat Anthony Portantino. In the U.S. House of Representatives, the town is in California's 32nd congressional district, represented by Democrat Grace Napolitano. The town is also in the 41st Assembly District,represented by Democrat Chris Holden. The city is located on the San Andreas Fault, which runs through the town. The San Andreas River flows through the city, which was once a tributary to the San Francisco Bay. The community is now part of the San Joaquin River Delta, which is also part of California's Central Coast. It is located in the San Diego County region of the California Bay Area, which includes the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego. The area is also known as the "San Joaquin Valley" because of its proximity to the city's central and northern areas. It was once known as "San Dimas" or "San Jose" by the residents of the area. It has a population of about 2,000 people, most of whom live in or near the town's downtown area. The village has a history of being heavily affected by the Great Depression and the Great Recession of the 1930s and 1940s. It also suffered through the Second World War, when many of its residents were forced to leave the area because of the war. The current mayor is a former mayor of the town, who was elected in the 1980s.

The majority of the city lies within the Bonita Unified School District. Students living in the Via Verde neighborhood south of Puente Ave and along San Dimas Ave. attend South Hills High School. The city is also home to Life Pacific College, which is affiliated with the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees. Small numbers of students attend school in Charter Oak Unified school District. The school district is part of the Los Angeles County Office of Education. The district has been in existence since the early 1900s. It is currently under the control of the California Department of Education and the California State University, Los Angeles. It was founded by the California School of Social Sciences in the early 20th century. The state of California was created in the 1930s by the state legislature. It has been the seat of the state's Social Services Department since the 1950s, when it was created. The California State School of the Social Sciences was established in the 1960s. In the 1970s, the state created the California College of the Arts and Sciences, which offers a variety of degrees. The college was the first of its kind in the state. It opened its doors to students in the 1980s and has been there ever since. The university is located on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. It also has a campus in Los Angeles, which opened in the 1990s. The campus is home to a number of other colleges, including the California Institute of Technology.
Infrastructure
A future extension of the Metro L Line, from its current terminus in Azusa to the City of Montclair in San Bernardino County, will include a station in downtown San Dimas. The station is not expected to be in service until 2026. When it opens, the rail line will be renamed the A Line per Metro's new naming convention, and it will connect with the former Blue Line via the new Regional Connector in downtown Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services operates the Pomona Health Center in Pomona, serving most of San Dim as well as some portions of Monrovia. The L.A. County Sheriff's Department provides law enforcement services for the city, and operates the SanDimas Station. Some portions of the city are also served by theMonrovia Health Center, which is located in the city's outskirts. The San DimAs Fire Department provides fire protection services to the city. The city also has its own fire department, which operates the San Dimas Station in the downtown area. The fire department also operates a fire station in the nearby town of Pomona. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a training facility in the town, which serves the city and its surrounding areas. It is also the site of the San Dimos Fire Station, which was built in the 1950s. The town also has a water treatment facility, which opened in the 1970s. It was the first of its kind in the Los Angeles area.
Cultural references
San Dimas is the home of the eponymous protagonists of the 1989 hit comedy film Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and its sequels. Some scenes were shot at Raging Waters in San Dimas. In the 1953 film "Hondo", John Wayne's character Hondo Lane has a ranch in SanDimas. The town is also known for being the inspiration for the TV series "Sanford and Son" and the TV show "The Jeffersons", which was based on the book "Jeffersons" by John Jefferson. It is also the birthplace of the baseball team the San Francisco 49ers, which is based on San Dim as well as the football team the Los Angeles 49ers.
