History

Ygnacio Palomares and Ricardo Véjar received the 15,000-acre (61 km²) Rancho San Jose land grant from Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1837. The land included the present day cities Pomona, Claremont, San Dimas, Glendora, and La Verne. Lordsburg became known as the "Heart of the Orange Empire" until after World War II, when the citrus industry slowly faded away. Today the last two orange groves are on the grounds of the LaVerne Mansion and Heritage Park. The town of Lordsburg was named after entrepreneur Isaac W. Lord, who had a large land sale and named the new town 'Lordsburg' after himself. This is a better indicator than the average, because the median is not changed as much by a few unusually high or low values. The property tax rate of $7.73 shown here is the rate per $1,000 of home value. If for simplification for example the tax rate is $14.00 and the home value is $250,000, the property tax would be $14.00 x ($250,000/1000), or $3500. This is the 'effective' tax rate.
