Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles, California located in the San Fernando Valley, founded in 1927. The neighborhood is roughly bounded by Studio City to the east, Van Nuys to the north, Encino to the west, Bel Air and Beverly Hills Post Office to the south. In the 2010 census, Sherman Oaks had a population of 52,677 people and 25,255 households. The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 82% non-Hispanic white, 5% Asian American and 3% African American; 11% were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Iran (14.1%) and Mexico (8.8%) were the most common places of birth for the residents who were born abroad. In 2000, the percentages of residents aged 19 to 49 and 65 and older were among the county's highest. The percentage of households that earned $125,000 and up was high for Los Angeles County. The percentages of divorced residents and of widows were also high. The average household size of two people was low when compared to the rest of the city and the county. In 2008, the city estimated that the resident population had increased to 65,436. The median household income was $69, which was high in 2008, but about average for the city for a whole. In addition to the police department, which operates 78, which serves Sherman Oaks, the Los Angeles Community Fire Department operates the nearby Van Nuy's Community Fire Station 88 and South Nuys/Valley Glen Station 102.

History

Sherman Oaks is the primary city name, but also Van Nuys are acceptable city names or spellings. In 1991, a group of homeowners living in the Chandler Estates area successfully petitioned former L.A. City Councilmember Zev Yaroslavsky to re-draw the boundaries of Sherman Oaks. In 2009, the Los Angeles City council voted to redraw neighborhood boundaries again to allow an area of about 1,800 homes in Van Nuys to be included. The 1994 Northridge earthquake caused damage in the surrounding area. The homeowners in the Sherman Oaks area later won a lawsuit to prevent the Community Redevelopment Agency from managing the rebuilding efforts. The company had subdivided 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land that would become Sherman Oaks in 1927. In 1927, each acre was sold for $780. Sherman Oaks was named after Gen. Moses Hazeltine Sherman, who was a partner of the Los Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company. Sherman's other major venture was the L.L.P.R. Railroad, which was built in the late 1800s and early 1900s in the San Fernando Valley. He died in a car accident in 1929. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. The family has lived in Sherman Oaks since the early 1950s, when it was named for him. It is one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Los Angeles, with a population of more than 1.5 million people. The city of Los Angeles is home to many affluent neighborhoods, such as the Beverly Hills neighborhood of Santa Monica and the San Diego neighborhood of San Diego.

Geography and climate

The neighborhood is home to the Beverly Hills Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and the California Department of Health and Human Services. It is also known as "Beverly Hills" because of its proximity to the city's famous Beverly Hills neighborhood, which is located on the west side of the city. It was named after Beverly Hills, California, where it was founded in the early 20th century. It has been home to many celebrities, including George Clooney, Robert Redford, George W. Bush, Tom Hanks, George Lucas, and Oprah Winfrey. It also has been known to be a hotbed of crime, particularly in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when a string of murders occurred in the area. The area was also known for its hot springs, particularly the San Fernando Valley, which are located in the north and west of the neighborhood. In the late 1980s and 1990s, the neighborhood was known as the "West Side" because it was home to a number of high-rise apartment buildings, including one that was built in the 1970s. The West Side was also the site of the notorious "LAPD" burglaries, which took place in the mid-1990s and 2000s. In 2008, the city was the subject of a documentary, "The West Side of Beverly Hills", which focused on the crime and drug problems in the West.

It was considered "not especially diverse" ethnically within Los Angeles, with a high percentage of white residents. The breakdown was whites, 73.8%; Latinos, 11.8; Asians, 5.7%; blacks, 4.4%; and others, 4,4%. The percentage of households that earned $125,000 and up was highfor Los Angeles County and the average household income in the city was $68,000. It had 6,687 people per square mile, among the lowest population densities for theCity.

Government and infrastructure

Los Angeles Fire Department operates Station 88 Sherman Oaks and Station 102 South Van Nuys/Valley Glen in Sherman Oaks. In addition the department operates Fire Station 78, which serves Sherman Oaks, in Studio City. The United States Postal Service Sherman Oaks Post Office is located at 14900 Magnolia Boulevard. In 1978 the neighborhood played a key role in the drive for Proposition 13 and in 2002 was the epicenter of an unsuccessful San Fernando Valley secession movement. The Los Angeles Police Department operates the nearby Van nuys Community Police Station at 6240 Sylmar Avenue, 91401, serving the community. The neighborhood is located in Los Angeles County, California, near the San Fernando River and the Los Angeles River. The community is home to the Santa Catalina Mountains, which can be easily seen from the city's downtown area. It is also home to Los Angeles City Hall, which is located on the west side of the Santa Monica Mountains, on the north side of Los Angeles. The city is also the site of the Hollywood Hills neighborhood, which was built in the 1950s and 1960s. The area is also known as the Santa Clara Valley, and is located near the Santa Ana River and Los Angeles Lake, which are both on the east side. The Santa Clara River is the source of the San Gabriel River, which runs through the city and into the Santa Cruz Mountains. Education

Forty-five percent of Sherman Oaks residents aged 25 and older had earned a four-year degree by 2000, a high percentage for both the city and the county. Los Angeles Public Library operates the Sherman Oaks Branch. The library was renamed in 1970, as a tribute to Martin Pollard, owner of the nearby Casa de Cadillac. Some residents do not have school-age children, and many others send their children to private schools. Portions of the community are zoned to Van Nuys High School. Other portions are zoning to Grant High School in Valley Glen. The Sherman Oaks area is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. LAUSD schools within the boundary include: Vehicle Nuys Middle School, Kester Avenue Elementary School, and Dixie Canyon Avenue Elementary. Private schools include: Notre Dame High School, The Buckley School, Village Glen School and Community Harvest Charter School, which closed in 2012. The city of Los Angeles operates a public library, also known as the Sherman Oaks Branch, which was named in 1970. The branch is located in the Magnolia Woods area of the city. It is located on the corner of Magnolia Woods and Riverside Canyon Avenue in Sherman Oaks. It was named after the nearby Casa de Cadillac, which is owned by the Martin Pollard family. It has a branch in the Westlake area of Los Angeles County, where it is known as The Martin Pollard Branch.

Parks and recreation

The Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park is in Sherman Oaks. The park has an auditorium, two lighted baseball diamonds, and lighted indoor basketball courts. It also has a lighted American football field, an indoor gymnasium without weights, and picnic tables. The city operates the Sherman Oaks Castle Park with arcade, batting cages, and miniature golf facilities, in the same place as the park. There is also a seasonal outdoor heated swimming pool in the park, which is open to the public during the summer months. It is located on the same grounds as the senior center, which has a banquet capacity of 200 and an assembly capacity of 300. The pool is also open during the winter months, and has a capacity of 1,000 people. It has eight tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts, as well as picnic tables and a children's play area. The senior center also has two kitchens, a play area, a shuffle board place, a stage, and two storage rooms. It was built in the 1960s. It opened in the former home of the former owner of the Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Hotel, which was located in the area. In the 1970s, the city bought the hotel and converted it into a senior center. The center is located in a former home, and was also used as a senior citizen center in the 1980s and 1990s. There are two kitchens in the center, one for cooking and one for cleaning. The Senior Citizen Center has two community/meeting rooms.

In popular culture

The TV series Sherman Oaks appeared on the USA network from 1995 to 1997. It followed plastic surgeon Dr. Sanford Baker and his family as they were filmed by a young documentary filmmaker. The series Never Have I Ever, and Black-ish are set in Sherman Oaks. The town is also the setting for the TV series The Hills, which is set in the 1950s and 1960s. It was also the inspiration for the film "Sherman Oaks," which was shot in the town in the 1970s and 1980s. In the film, Dr. Baker was a plastic surgeon who treated patients at a local hospital. He was the subject of the movie "Shermer Oaks", which was based on the book "The Surgeon's Daughter" by David Bianculli. The movie was released in 1989, and the book was published in 1989. The film was directed by Robert Redford, who also directed the film version of "The Shining" and "The Godfather," among other films. The TV series "The Hills" was filmed in the same town and aired on the U.S. network in the 1990s and early 2000s. The show was set in a fictional town called Sherman Oaks, California. It is set during the early years of the 20th century, and follows the life of Dr.  Sanford Baker, a surgeon who treats patients at the same hospital in the area. The first episode of the series, "Sher Sherman Oaks," aired on September 14, 1995, at 9 p.m.

In 2009, some former Van NuYS neighborhoods won approval to break off from Van Nuy's and join the neighboring communities of Lake Balboa, Valley Glen, and Sherman Oaks in an effort to raise their property values. In October 2005, the Metro Orange Line opened with two stations, Vannuys station (Los Angeles Metro) and Sepulveda station. In 2014, a "Great Streets" project was introduced by Mayor Eric Garcetti with Van Nues Blvd. to be redesigned between Victory Blvd. and Oxnard Street. A new Los Angeles county family services building was built on the southwest corner of Van Nuies Blvd. and Saticoy Street in 2016.

In October 2005, the Metro Orange Line opened with two stations, Van Nuy's station (Los Angeles Metro) and Sepulveda station. A new Los Angeles County family services building was built on the southwest corner of Vannuys Blvd. and Saticoy Street in 2016. In 1991, Marvin Braude, a member of the L.A. City Council, redesignated a 45-block area of van Nuys as a part of Sherman Oaks. This redesignated area included the community of Magnolia Woods. Some area residents had presented a petition and several original deeds that stated "Sherman Oaks" to Braude. They argued that the area was a partof Sherman Oaks until the 1960s, when ZIP Codes labeling the area as Van NuYS were established. Geography and climate

Van Nuys is bordered on the north by North Hills, on the northeast by Panorama City, and on the east by Valley Glen. It is also bordered by the Sepulveda Basin, Lake Balboa, and Northridge. Some former Van Nuys neighborhoods won approval in 2009 to break off and join neighboring neighborhoods. City Council member Tony Cardenas "suggested the change was motivated by racism," he said. The change was approved by the Los Angeles City Council on November 6, 2009. The new boundaries were approved on a vote of 9-0, with one member of the City Council dissenting. The vote was on behalf of the residents of the former neighborhoods, who said they wanted to break away from Van Nuy's boundaries to raise their property values. It was the first time in the history of Los Angeles that such a move had been approved by a city council in more than a decade. The move was approved on November 7, 2009, by a vote by the Council of Neighborhoods, with the support of the Mayor's Office of Planning and Development, and the City of Van NuY's Board of Supervisors. The decision was made on the recommendation of the Planning and Zoning Board of Trustees, which approved the change on November 8, 2008, with a vote on November 9, 2008. The City Council's vote on the new boundaries was on November 10, 2008; the vote was approved unanimously on November 13, 2009; the decision was to join the neighboring neighborhoods of Valley Glen, Sherman Oaks, and LakeBalboa.

There were 4,917 families headed by single parents or 21.3%, considered high for both the city and the county. The median yearly household income in 2008 dollars was $41,134, considered average for the city. Renters occupied 73.9% ofThe housing stock, and house- or apartment-owners held 26.1%. The neighborhood was considered "moderately diverse" ethnically within Los Angeles. The breakdown was Hispanics, 60.5%; whites, 23.1%; Asians, 6.4%; blacks, 6%; and others, 4%. In 2000, the median age for residents was 28, considered young for city and county neighborhoods, and the percentages of residents aged 10 or younger and 19 to 34 were among the highest in Los Angeles County. The percentages of households that earned $40,000 or less were high for the county, as well as the percentage of those who earned $30,000-plus. The neighborhood had a population of 11,542 people per square mile in 2000, considered the average for Los Angeles and the city as a whole. The percentage of residents who are under the age of 30 was among the lowest in the city, but the highest for the country.

Economy

Van Nuys has two Target stores, one on Sepulveda and Hatteras, and another on Raymer and Kester. General Motors operated an automobile factory at Van Nuys Boulevard and Arminta Street from 1947 until 1992. The plant manufactured 6.3 million vehicles, including the Chevrolet Impala, Corvair, and later was the primary location for the Nova, Camaro, and Pontiac Firebird. In 1999, The Plant shopping center opened on the former factory site, anchored by a Home Depot, OfficeMax & 16-screen Mann movie theater multiplex. Sound City Studios is a well-respected recording studio in van Nuys.Various parts of the 1984 film The Terminator were filmed in Van nuys. Van NuYS, along with Chatsworth, is home to numerous pornographic film studios, distributors, and manufacturers.Grupo TACA operates a Vannuys-area TACA Center at 6710 Van Nuy Boulevard. The U.S. Postal Service operates a post office in Van Nuies. The post office is located on the corner of Van NuY Boulevard and Sepulves Avenue. The Post Office is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. It is open to the public in the United States and to the European Union in the evenings and on weekends. The postal service operates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, and Imperial Beach.

Government services

The U.S. Census Bureau operates the Los Angeles Regional Office in Van Nuys. The California Department of Developmental Services operates the North Los Angeles County Regional Center on Sherman Way west of Sepulveda Boulevard. The Social Security Administration once operated a branch office on Vannuys Boulevard north of Victory Boulevard. This location was closed in 2011, and moved to Panorama City on Roscoe Blvd and Van NuYS Blvd. The agency serves a large population of developmentally disabled people living in the San Fernando Valley. The U.N. World Health Organization operates a branch of its office in Van nuys. It is located in the Lake Balboa neighborhood in Los Angeles, west of Van Nuy. The United States Postal Service operates the Civic Center Van Nuies Post Office at 6200 Van Nucy Boulevard in Vannuy. It also operates the Van Nuoy Post Office in the nearby Lake Balbo neighborhood in LA. The Los Angeles Fire Department operates Station 39 (Van Nuys), Station 90 Van NuY Airport Area, Station 100 West Van Nues, and Station 102 East Van Nuya. The L.A. Police Department operates the nearby Van Nuay Community Police Station at 6420 Sylmar Avenue, 91401, serving the neighborhood. The city's fire department also operates Station 100 (Van nuys) and Station 101 (East Van Nuays) in the West Los Angeles area. The fire department has a substation in the East Los Angeles neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Parks

Van Nuys Recreation Area has an auditorium and gymnasium with a capacity of 420 people. Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area to the west is a large open space park. The Metro Orange Line bicycle path connects Van Nuys to it and other valley destinations. It has numerous recreation facilities and natural areas, including a wildlife preserve, cricket complex, and archery range at Woodley Park. Delano Park has a lighted football field, a community room, an indoor gymnasIUM with no weights, picnic tables, and lighted tennis courts. The Van nuys Sherman Oaks Pool is a seasonal outdoor heated swimming pool. The senior community hall also has two community/meeting rooms, two kitchens, a play area, a shuffle board area, and two storage rooms. It is located in the same place as the park, and has eight courts. It also has a pool, a senior community center, and a multi-purpose room, as well as a pool and a senior citizen center. The park is in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, near the San Fernando Valley border. It was built in the early 1900s as part of the San Francisco Bay Area, and was named after the city's first postmaster, William "Bill" Sherman, who was born in 1881. The area is home to a variety of parks, many of which are open to the public. The city also has several other parks in the Los Angeles area, such as the Santa Catalina Mountains, the San Diego River, and the Santa Monica Mountains.

The percentage of the same-age residents who had less than a high school diploma (43.1%) was high for Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Unified School District operates neighborhood public schools.Lycée International de Los Angeles previously operated a campus in Van nuys. The school continued to use the name "Van Nuys" despite the move. The district operates a number of charter schools, as well as private schools and a community center. The city's highest school is the University of California, Los Angeles, which has a campus on the campus of the Los Angeles Institute of Art and Design, which opened in the 1970s. It is the only L.A. public school to have a private school on its campus. It was closed in the 1980s and 1990s, but reopened in the 2000s as part of the LAUSD's expansion into the San Fernando Valley. It has since closed its private school campus, which is located on the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains. It also has a community centre on the outskirts of the city, which was built in the 1990s. The community center was built to house the city's community center, which began in the late 1990s and has since been expanded. The neighborhood center is on the corner of Saticoy and Melrose avenues. It opened in 1998. The area is known as the "Little City" and was once known as "The Village".

Public libraries

The Van Nuys Branch Library of the Los Angeles Public Library serves the community. The library is located in Van NuYS, Los Angeles, California. It is located on the west side of Los Angeles. The branch is open seven days a week from 9am to 6pm. It has a collection of more than 2,000 books and magazines. It also has a computer lab, which can be used to help people with reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Transportation

Van Nuys has two Metro G Line stations: the Van Nuys (Los Angeles Metro station) and the Sepulveda. The closest airport with commercial airline service is Hollywood Burbank Airport in Burbank. All stations, and the neighborhood's major streets, are served by Metro Local, Metro Rapid, and/or other bus lines and systems. It is planned to host the East San Fernando Light Rail line by 2027 with construction starting in 2021. The area is served by the 405 (San Diego Freeway) passing through it. Other nearby freeways include the Route 101 (Ventura Freeways), the Route 170 (Hollywood Freeway), and the Golden State Freeway section of Interstate 5. The community includes a terminal for the Vannuys FlyAway Bus service, which travels to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) It is also served by Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight and the Metrolink Ventura County Line. It also has a Metro Busway station, which connects to the Metro B Line subway at the North Hollywood station, for access to Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, and other Los Angeles Metro lines. There is a bicycle path and pedestrian walkway along the G Line route, to Pierce College, Canoga Park, and Chatsworth Station on the west, and North Hollywood on the east. It has a park and ride center, which is open to the public, and a library, which has a cafe, which offers free Wi-Fi.
