Chama is a village in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,022 at the 2010 census. The village is located in the Rocky Mountains about 7 miles (11 km) south of the Colorado-New Mexico border. It is the western terminus of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, a steam-driven, narrow gauge heritage railway. Geography
Chama is located at 36°5341N 106°354W (36.894777, -106.584406), on the Rio Chama, 6.5 miles (10 km) south of the Colorado border. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.7 km²), all of it land. The village is home to the Chama Indians, who have lived in the area since the 1800s. The Chama River runs through the center of the village. Chama is also known as the "Rio Chama" because of its name, which means "the river" or "the stream" in Spanish. It is located on the Colorado River, which runs south to the border with Colorado, and the Colorado-New Mexico border, which is north of Chama. The town is named after the Chamas, a tribe that lived on the banks of the river in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It has a population of about 2,000. Chama is the western terminus of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, a steam-driven, narrow gauge heritage railway. It is the remaining 64 mile portion of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad's San Juan Extension built in the 1880s between Alamosa, Colorado, and Durango, Colorado. The route was abandoned in the late 1960s and the tracks from Chama westward to Durango were torn up soon afterwards. The railway carries visitors to and from Osier, Colorado and Antonito, Colorado during the summer months. It was built to carry passengers on the San Juan Railroad, which was built in 1879 and 1881. The tracks were torn down in the 1970s and 1980s and replaced by a new narrow gauge narrow-gauge heritage railway, the Chama and Osier Railway. The Chama & Osier Railroad was opened in 1989 and is now a popular tourist attraction in the area. It carries passengers on a narrow gauge, steam-powered, heritage railway which was originally built to transport passengers to Osier on the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. It has a total length of 64 miles (100km) and is currently open to visitors in the summer and winter months. The train runs between Osier and the town of Antonito in Colorado, as well as the towns of Chama, Durango and Alamosa in the eastern part of the state.
