Chandler is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of Chandler was 275,987, up from 236,123 at the 2010 census. In 2010, Chandler was named an All-America City by the National Civic League. It is bordered by Tempe, Mesa, Phoenix, and the Gila River Indian Community. The center of the city, along Arizona State Route 87, is 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Downtown Phoenix. The city has experienced exponential growth since the early 1990s, ranking among the fastest-growing municipalities in the country. The population had grown to more than 275,000 residents in more than 100,000 homes as of 2020. The heart of Chandler remains its revitalized historic downtown, which includes the Chandler City Hall and the Chandler Center for the Arts. It has reached its physical limits save for some remaining county islands and cannot expand outward anymore due to being bound in by the TPC, Tempe and Mesa MSA, and Gilbert MSA. It was named the only Arizona winner for the 61st annual awards by the NCLL in 2010, and is the only city in the state to receive the award. The first veterinary surgeon in Arizona Territory, Alexander John Chandler, settled on a ranch south of Mesa, studying irrigation engineering in 1891. By 1900, he had acquired 18,000 acres (73 km²) of land, and began drawing up plans for a townsite on what was then known as the Chandler Ranch.

History

Chandler is the primary city name, but also Sun Lakes are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Chandler. Chandler was founded on May 16, 1912. It was named an All-America City by the National Civic League in 2010. The city's population has grown to more than 275,000 residents in more than 100,000 homes as of 2020. The heart of Chandler remains its revitalized historic downtown, which includes the Chandler City Hall and the Chandler Center for the Arts. The Chandler Museum celebrated its centennial on May 17, 2012, but the city had been celebrating the wrong date. In May 1912, the Chandler Arizonan newspaper had erroneously published the founding day as May 17. Through the years, residents had misremembered the correct date, which was Thursday, May 16, Chandler was the only Arizona winner for the 61st annual awards. It has since paced the Phoenix metropolitan area's high rate of growth, with suburban residential areas swallowing former agricultural plots. Some of this growth was fueled by the establishment of manufacturing plants for communications and computing firms such as Microchip, Motorola and Intel. The town's economy was sustained during the Great Depression (though the Depression was to blame for the cancellation of a second San Marcos hotel), but the cotton crash a few years later had a much deeper impact on the city's residents. By 1980, it had grown to 30,000, and it has since pacing the Phoenix metro area'shigh rate of Growth. In the early 1990s, the city of Chandler has experienced exponential growth, ranking among the fastest-growing municipalities in the country.

Geography

Chandler has reached its physical limits save for some remaining county islands and cannot expand outward anymore due to being bound in by the Gila River Indian Community, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Phoenix. The center of the city, along Arizona State Route 87, is 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Downtown Phoenix. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Chandler has a total area of 65.5 square miles (170 km²), of which 0.07square miles (0.18 km²) is listed as water. The city has a population of 1,816,000 (as of the 2010 Census). The city is located on the Arizona Turnpike, which runs from south of Phoenix to north of Phoenix. It is located in the central part of the state, near the junction of Arizona State Routes 87 and 87A. It has a temperature of  °C (°F) and °F (°C) with an average monthly rainfall of 1.2 inches (4.5 mm) and an average annual temperature of 1.4 inches (6.4 mm). The average annual rainfall is 1.3 inches (5.2 m) and the city has an average daily rainfall of 0.7 inches (2.0 mm), or 0.11 inches (3.3 cm) per day. The average yearly temperature is  0.7 in the city and 0.6 inches (1.1 in the surrounding area.

Demographics

At the time of the 2010 Census, there were 236,123 people, 86,924 households, and 60,212 families in the city. There were 101,229 housing units as of May 2016. The racial makeup of the city was 73.3% White, 4.8% Black or African American, 1.5% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.2%, Pacific Islander, and 8.3%. 21.9% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. The median income for a household in theCity was $70,456, and $81,720 for a family. The per capita income for the City was $23,904. About 4.6% of families and 6.6 of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.7% of those under age 18 and 8.0 of those age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.26. For every 100 females, there are 99.7 males, and for every 100 Females age 18 or over there are 96.9 males. In the city, the median age was 31 years, with 29.8 years of age of 18, 38.0% from 25 to 44, 17.8%, and 5. 8% who were 65 years of age or older. The city had a median income of $44,578 versus $31,763 for females.

Economy

Since 2003, more than 2,900 jobs and investments totalling $3 billion have been created along the Price and Santan freeways, in the Price Road Corridor. Three shopping malls provide a "strong attraction" to such an open-ended, high exposure trade area. The northern portion is "attractive and possesses the historic character" for success, which "can be grown to the south".Companies headquartered in Chandler include Infusionsoft, Microchip, and Rogers. Bashas' headquarters is in a county island surrounded by Chandler. According to the City of Chandler's website leading employers in the city include: Intel, Marvell, and Marvell Software. The city is home to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Arizona. The NIST is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (IAA) and is based in Mesa, Arizona. It is the only U.S. city to have its own NIST-designated LEED-certified manufacturing plant. NIST's LEED factory was the first in the world to be designated "environmentally sustainable" under current Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria. It employs approximately 25% of non-government workers in 2007. In 2008, NIST designated its first-ever "green" factory in Chandler, Arizona, as "environmental sustainable" to meet LEED criteria. In 2007, the city was the only city in Arizona to have a LEED plant in operation.

Culture

Chandler is noted for its annual Ostrich Festival. The McCullough-Price House, a 1938 Pueblo Revival-style home, was donated to the city by the Price-Propstra family in 2001. The Arizona Railway Museum is at Tumbleweed Park. A 70,000-square-foot (6,500 m2) Holocaust and Tolerance Museum has been slated for construction in Chandler. The Chandler Center for the Arts, a 1,500-seat regional performing arts venue and the Vision Gallery, a non-profit fine arts gallery representing over 300 regional artists in the Chandler area are downtown. There are numerous properties in the town of Chandler which are considered to be historical and have been included either in the National Register of Historic Places or listed as such by the Chandler Historical Society. The city of Chandler operates the facility, which is southwest of Chandler Fashion Center at 300 S. Chandler Village Dr. It is open to the public in the evenings and on the weekends. It was added to the National register of historic places on June 12, 2009, the official listing of America's historic and cultural resources worthy of preservation. It has been listed as part of the National Park Service's National Historic Register of Buildings and Landmarks since 1966. The museum is slated to open in the spring of 2015. It will be located in the city's Fashion Center, which was built in the early 1900s. There is also a museum at the Arizona State Fairgrounds, which opened in the late 1990s.

Parks and recreation

Chandler is one of twelve founding U.S. cities to receive the honor for the tenth consecutive year since the program was initiated in 2007. The Community Services Department, in Old Downtown Chandler, operates the community center, senior center, dozens of local neighborhood and community parks, two recreation centers and six aquatic centers. The Department publishes a quarterly recreation magazine called Break Time that is distributed free at many City facilities and through a free subscription service to residents. The sixth annual Day of Play, attended by more than 5,000 people, was held on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at, Tumbleweed Park.Veterans Oasis Park is also the site of the city's highest point, at 1,311 feet (400 m). The annual Ostrich Festival, the Fourth of July Fireworks Festival and the sixth annual day of play were all held at Tumble weed Park in 2012. The City of Chandler is a member of the National Council of Parks and Recreation (NCPR) and the National Park Service (NPS). The NPS is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. that advocates for parks and recreation in the United States. The NSP is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that was founded in 1987. The Council's mission is to promote and protect the health and well-being of the nation's parks, beaches, rivers and streams. The council is also committed to supporting the arts, culture, and heritage in the city.

Government

Chandler is represented by a mayor, a vice mayor and five city council members. The vice mayor is elected by the city council from among its members. Council members represent the entire city and are not elected from districts or wards. The mayor is Kevin Hartke and the council members are Christine Ellis, Mark Stewart, Matt Orlando, Rene Lopez andOD Harris. The city has a population of 1.2 million people. It is located in the central part of the state. The population of the city is 1.3 million people and it is in the middle of a historic growth period. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It has since been the scene of several other major battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg and the Second World War, which began in the early 20th century. The current mayor and council members were elected in 2008. The council was elected for a five-year term, starting in 2010, and the mayor was re-elected in 2012. The last time the city had a full-time mayor was in 2008, when the current mayor was elected in 2012, when his term was shortened to three years. The new mayor was Terry Roe, who was first elected in 2010. He is the first openly gay mayor in the city's history and the first woman to be elected to the position. He was inaugurated in 2011, and has been in office since 2012.

Education

Most of Chandler is served by the Chandler Unified School District. The leading charter schools in Chandler are Basis Schools and Legacy Traditional School. Chandler-Gilbert Community College, serving 13,000 students, is in the east of the city near the Gilbert border. Arizona State University is 14 miles (23 km) from downtown in Tempe. Ottawa University began offering adult education programs in Chandler in 1977. Chandler University opened in 2011. The main library is in downtown Chandler, with three branches elsewhere in the city: Sunset, Basha (shared with Basha High School), and Hamilton (shared with Hamilton High School) The Chandler Public Library serves Chandler and the greater Phoenix East Valley. It is located in the downtown area, with branches in Basha, Sunset, and Hamilton. It also has a branch in the San Vincente neighborhood, which is near the city's border with Gilbert. The library is open seven days a week, seven days per week. It has three branches in Chandler and one in the Gilbert area, which has one branch in Gilbert. It was established in 1894. It's the only public library in the Phoenix area. It opened its first branch in 1891. It closed its last branch in 1998. It now has four branches in the Chandler area, including two in the Basha area, one in Gilbert, and one near the Chandler border. Its main branch is in Downtown Chandler, and the other two are in the Sunset area and the Hamilton area, both of which are in Chandler.

Radio and television licenses

Chandler has only one radio license: KMLE. The city has one television license: KTVL. The town has one newspaper license: The Tribune-Review. It also has one TV license: the Yampa Valley Times. It has no radio or television licenses, but does have a newspaper license. The Yampa River runs through the city's downtown area. The river is a tributary of the Colorado River, which runs through Chandler. It is also the source of the town's water supply, which is owned by the YP&E Water Company. It was also the site of the city’s first water treatment plant, in the early 20th century. It's also the location of its first television station, KMLE, which was built in the 1950s. It now has a second TV license, KVLE, and a radio license, which it has since lost. It had one TV station in the 1970s and 1980s, when it was taken over by KTVS. It still has one radio station, KTVC, which broadcasts on KVLC-TV, which has a license to broadcast on the KVCE-TV satellite channel. The station also has a television station in Yampa County, which airs on KTVE-TV. It’ has no television license in the city, but has a radio station on the Yuma County, Arizona, campus. It broadcasts on a satellite channel, KWYC-TV (on the YMCA-TV channel).
