Delta is the largest city in Millard County, Utah, United States. It is located along the Sevier River and is surrounded by farmland. The city has a total area of 3.2 square miles or 8.3 square kilometres. The population was 3,436 at the 2010 census. Delta's climate is similar to that of Salt Lake City, but much more arid. It experiences a cold semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk) with hot summers and cold winters. During World War II, tens of thousands of Japanese-Americans were gathered up and placed in 10 incarceration camps to protect military installations from espionage. The Topaz Museum, located in Delta, works to preserve important sites at the relocation center and to provide information on the history of the camps. History

Delta is the primary city name, but also Deseret, Oasis, Sugarville, Sutherland are acceptable city names or spellings, Woodrow on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Delta, Utah. Delta was originally a railroad switch called Aiken. In 1905 Aiken was renamed Melville when Millard County began plans to set up irrigation and a dam. People purchased land for 50 cents an acre as long as they agreed to develop a 40-acre lot. During World War II, tens of thousands of Japanese-Americans were gathered up and placed in 10 incarceration camps. One of these camps, then entitled Central Utah Relocation Center, was located near Delta and filled with former residents of the San Francisco Bay Area. The Topaz Museum, located in Delta, works to preserve important sites at the relocation center and to provide information on the history of the camps. John Williams Gunnison was leading a federal surveying team near the Sevier Lake. He was ambushed by the Pahvant Indians and killed. The name is quite fitting as the area was a delta of the Seviers River. The Great Basin Museum is located in the town of Delta and displays a history of this area and the surrounding region. It is open to the public and has a collection of artifacts from the area and around the world that can be viewed at www.greatbasinmuseum.org. The topaz museum also has a gallery of photographs of the area that are kept and displayed at the museum's gallery. It also has an exhibit of the Gunnison Massacre Site, which is located at the top of the mountain. The museum's collection of photographs is also kept at the bottom of the page.

Just upstream of Delta, the Sevier river is dammed to provide irrigation water, reservoir storage, and cooling water for IPP Intermountain Power Project. This reservoir is referred to as the DMAD. Delta is home to the Deseret Melville Abraham and Delta water company, which provides water for the city and Sevier valley. The city is also home to Delta Airport, which is a major hub for air travel in the state of Utah. Delta has a population of around 2,000 people (as of the 2010 U.S. Census), with most of the population living in the Delta area of the state. It is located in the eastern part of the Wasatch Range.

Economy

One of the main sources of income for Delta is a power plant operated by the Intermountain Power Agency. The coal-powered power plant supplies power for much of Los Angeles county in California. Materion's, formerly Brush Wellman, beryllium refining plant is located north of Delta in Millard County. Graymont Lime has a plant in the Cricket Mountains, about 32.5 miles southwest of Delta. It is one of the ten largest lime plants in the United States. Alfalfa hay is the main crop of the Delta area. Due to the dry climate in the Delta region, farmers can control the moisture content of the hay when it is baled. This is very important to prohibit mold growth. Delta is home to many dairy farmers who may ship the milk out of the county. It was previously owned by Continental Lime which Graymont lime purchased. The town is located due to its access to the railway and major highways 6 and 50. It has a population of about 3,000 people. Science

Delta is home to the Lon and Mary Watson Cosmic Ray Center, the main staging area for the Telescope Array Project experiment. Other minerals and rocks that are prevalent near Delta include obsidian, opal, and geodes. Delta is located in the western part of Millard County, in the eastern part of the county, and is located on the eastern edge of the Big Mountain Range. The town of Delta was founded in 1881. It is located at the base of the Rocky Mountains, about 50 miles from the town of Millardsville. The county's population is about 3,000. At the end of the 201415 school year, the Delta area schools were reconfigured, placing all students in preschool, kindergarten, and first and second grades at Delta South elementary School. Delta High School is a public school located in rural central Utah, drawing students from several small outlying communities. With a new school and a diverse student population, Delta High is the hub of an agricultural-based community. Delta Middle School serves approximately 420 students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and is located in Delta, Utah. Its students come from the City of Delta and several smaller communities in Millards County. Delta high school has a staff of 21 teachers, nine instructional assistants, and eleven additional support personnel. Delta middle school has an 87 per cent graduation rate and a total of 549 enrolled students from the ages of 9th to 12th. The high school also offers welding and machining classes.

Entertainment

Each July 4, the Hinckley Lions Club sponsors a demolition derby at the Millard County Fairgrounds. The Snow Goose Festival occurs every winter as the geese migrating through Delta stop at Gunnison Bend Reservoir. Days of the Old West Rodeo takes place every year. There is a fireworks display sponsored by Delta City. The city is home to the U.S. Air Force Academy, which offers a variety of aviation-related courses and training programs. It is also the home of the National Football League, which has a team of more than 1,000 players. The town is also home to a number of sports teams, including the Delta Highlanders and the Delta City Highlanders, who compete in the National Invitational High School Football League and the National High School Rugby League. It also hosts the American Football Association (AFA), which has teams of over 1,500 players, and the American Basketball Association (ABA) which has around 1,200 players. It has a number of festivals and events, including an annual fireworks display. It was the site of the first air show in the United States, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The AFA also hosts an annual rodeo, which takes place each year in the town. It occurs in conjunction with the AFA's Pikes Peak Stampede, which is held in the middle of the Afton Canyon in the northern part of the state. The derby attracts crowds of over 3,000 people.
