Magna is a metro township in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. The current population of the township stands at 29,251 according to the 2020 census, a 10.4% increase over 26,505 in 2010. Settlement of the area began in 1851 shortly after pioneers reached the Salt Lake Valley. Early farmers settled in 1868 at the base of the northern Oquirrh Mountains and called their community Pleasant Green. By 1900, there were about 20 families in the area. In 1903, Magna saw a large influx of Greek immigrants, primarily prompted by coal mine strikes in Carbon County and Fresno, California. This group eventually established a thriving Greektown and community. By the 1960s, the community was a small dynamite manufacturing firm producing rocket motors at its Bacchus Works plant, south of the Magna community, named after founder T.W. Bacus. The community was once a small town, but has grown into a suburban community with a population of over 30,000. The town's fortunes fluctuated with the copper industry. During the Great Depression, the mills shut down for a period, and workers were laid off. Around World War II, there was a resurgence as the first signs of a suburban development appeared in the community. In 1961, voters approved a bond that financed a sewage treatment plant, storage tanks, and improvements to the West Valley City areas. The West Valley Valley areas, including Magna, Kearns, and West City, are now part of the West Salt Lake City area.

History

Early farmers settled in 1868 at the base of the northern Oquirrh Mountains and called their community Pleasant Green. In 1890, in response to a law requiring all children to receive free public education, the first school was built in the community. In 1914, Renald Woolley, the Post Master of the township, petitioned to have the Pleasant Green post office changed to Magna because of confusion with other towns such as Pleasant Grove. The petition was accepted and in a meeting above his store, the locals accepted the name of Magna for the town and post office, on October 19, 1915. By the 1960s, the community was experiencing the first signs of a transition. Magna included churches, saloons, fraternal halls, and stores. Several small neighborhoods, such as Greektown, Japantown, Snaketown, and Little Italy, developed around Main Street. Many early residents were immigrants, primarily from Eastern Europe but Magna was not a mining town. Between 1915 and 1960, the town's fortunes fluctuated with the copper industry. During the Great Depression, the mills shut down for a period, and workers were laid off. Around 1940, there was a resurgence as the pending war demand. Growth continued after World War II, and throughout the 60s. The town's population began shifting south during the 1970s, but only did Magna's population begin shifting north during the 1980s. As of the 1990s, there were about 20 families in the area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the metro township has a total area of 7.4 square miles (19 km²), all land. The community lies just to the northeast of the Oquirrh Mountains and is directly south of the Great Salt Lake. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the community has a population of 1,071. The metro township is located in the eastern part of the state. The population of the community was 1,061 at the 2010 census, up from 1,038 at the 2000 census. The town is located on the eastern edge of the Salt Lake Valley, and is just south of Utah's Great Salt lake. The city's population is 1,081, according to the U.N. Census bureau, and the community's population has grown to 1,091 since the 1990s. The area has an estimated population of 2,074. The township is home to the University of Utah, which has a campus in the town of Salt Lake City. It is also the home of the Utah Air Force Base, which was established in the early 1900s. It was the site of the first air base in the state's history, and was known as the "Salt Lake Air Base" until the mid-20th century. It has been named after the town's namesake, who was born in the area in 1875. The current mayor is the son of a former mayor, who died in a car accident in the late 1930s.

Demographics

As of 2015, there were 27,451 people in Magna. The racial makeup of the county was 69.76% non-Hispanic White. 25.64% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Magna is located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Utah. The county is home to the University of Utah's College of Business and Economics, which was founded in 1903. Education

Magna lies within the Granite School District and is home to 5 elementary schools, Copper Hills, Elk Run, Lake Ridge, Magna, and Pleasant Green. It also has Matheson Junior High, and Cyprus High School, whose sports teams compete in 5A-level competition (1A being the lowest and 5A the highest) The former Brockbank Junior High was closed in 2016 and combined with the Cyprus High campus. Magna has a population of about 2,000, with most of its residents living in the town of Magna. The town is located on the banks of the Little Snake River, which runs through the center of the town. It is also home to the town's only high school, Cyprus High, which has a student body of about 1,000. The school district has a total enrollment of about 3,000 students, most of whom live in the city of Magna and its surrounding areas. The district also has a number of private schools, including Magna Elementary and Magna High School. It has a high school with a student population of more than 1,200, with many of its students living in Magna and the surrounding area. The high school has a sports team that competes in the 5A level, which is the highest level of competition in the state. It was built in the 1970s and opened in the 1980s, and is now home to two high schools: Cyprus High and Mathes on Junior High. The elementary schools are located in the same district as Cyprus High.

Transportation

Magna lies on the grid system of the Salt Lake Valley, between 7200 and 9200 West and 2100 and 4100 South. SR-201 runs along the northern border as an expressway and intersects with I-80 to the west. The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) operates a local bus route and bus rapid transit (BRT) line within the community, both follow roughly the same route and enter from West Valley City. The 3500 South MAX was the first and, as of April 2016, still the only BRT route operated by UTA. The bus system goes from UTA's Millcreek TRAX station on West 3300 South all the way to South 8400 South in Magna, between which it passes by the beginning of the TRAX Green Line. Although the bus route of the 3500 North MAX stops at Magna's main street, the bus also loops around other places in the community. It runs every 15 minutes on the weekdays, as opposed to the majority of the UTA bus routes which run every half-hour to an hour. The UTA 3500 East MAX line runs every 30 minutes on weekdays and every hour on the weekends. It connects with the Saltlake City International Airport, via Downtown Salt Lake City the West Valley Central station by the Valley Fair Mall. It is the only UTA BRT line that runs every hour or more on the day of the week, unlike other routes that run every 10 minutes or less.

Mass media

The Magna Times is a local weekly broadsheet community newspaper that is based and published in Magna. In 2009, it had a circulation of Arbor 4,000 copies. The paper is published in English, French, Spanish and Italian. It is published on a weekly basis and has a print run of around 4,500 copies. It was founded in 1903 by a group of Magna schoolchildren. It has been published since the early 20th century. The newspaper is still published today in English and French, with a print circulation of about 4,200 copies in 2009. It also has a Spanish edition. It's published in French and Spanish, and was published in 2010 in a special edition of 10,000 copies for the first time in the history of the city. The paper has been published in the Magna area since the late 19th century, when it was founded. It was published in its current form since the mid-20th century and is published every week in a local edition of the Magna Times. The Magna Times is published in both English and Francois-Ludwigsburg English. The French edition is published weekly and the French edition of the magna times is published fortnightly. The two editions are published in different parts of the country. The English edition of the magna  Times is published twice a week, on Monday and Wednesday. The Swiss edition occurs once a week in the week.

Culture

Downtown Magna was used as a central filming location for the hit Disney Channel series Andi Mack. "The Spoon" Diner, a popular location for Andi and her friends to eat at, was actually made specifically for the show. The Empress Theatre was added to the National Register for Historic Places on May 9, 1985 (National Register #8500-0962) The theatre is located in the heart of Magna's historic downtown area. The theatre was built in the 1930s and is located on the corner of Main and Main Streets. It is currently located in a historic district that was added in the early 1980s.
