South Houston is a city in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 16,153 at the 2020 census. It is bordered by the cities of Houston and Pasadena, and geographically located southeast of Houston. The city is located at 29°3940N 95°1347W (29.660980, 95.229787). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.8 km², none of which is covered with water. South Houston is located within Harris County, within the WoodlandsSugar Land metropolitan area and Harris County. The South Houston Police Department is headquartered at 1023 West Street. The mayor is Joe Tamayo; the council members are Bill Kelly, Albert Hernandez, Robert Garcia, and Amy Burnett. The Texas House of Representatives is located in South Houston's 145th District. The state Senate is within the 6th District of South Houston; as of 2008, Mario Gallegos is the representative of that district. The county commissioner is Adrian Garcia; he heads Precinct 2; and as of 2020, Adrian Garcia heads 2nd Precinct 1; and the police chief is Herbert Gilbert of Precinct 29. The town's mayor is Irene Tamayos; it is open to members of the public at 7:30 PM; meetings are open to the public. History
Dumont was incorporated as the city of South Houston in 1913. South Houston's initial industrial activity consisted of shipping produce along the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad. The establishment of the Houston Ship Channel resulted in the establishment of manufacturing industries inland, including in South Houston. Between the 1940s and the early 1960s South Houston found rapid population growth. In 1980, South Houston had 11,782 inhabitants and 303 businesses. In 1990, 14,207 inhabitants lived in South HOUSTON. Most Hispanics in SouthHouston were of Mexican descent.Elephants belonging to former South Houston mayor George Christy, a circus owner, assisted the construction of the Spencer Highway. Elephants belong to George Christy and his son, George Christy Jr., the former mayor of SouthHouston. The city had 7,523 inhabitants in 1960. From the 1980 census to the 1990 census, Hispanics began to move into South Houston by an amount between 1,000 and 3,500 per square mile. Most of the Hispanics living in the city were of Hispanic descent. In the 1980s and 1990s, Hispanics moved into the city by an average of 1,500 to 3,000 per square miles. The population of the city in the 1990s was 14,208 inhabitants. In 2000, the city had 8,788 inhabitants. The U.S. Census Bureau recorded the city's population as 7,527 inhabitants in 2000. The state of Texas has a population of 7,856 inhabitants.

In 2006 H-E-B opened the "Mi Tienda" ("My Store") Hispanic-themed store in South Houston. As of 2007 all of its employees spoke Spanish. The Lewis Food Town grocery store chain is based in south Houston. The chain is part of the H-B group of grocery stores called H-O-M-B. The store chain was founded in 1883 and is now based in Houston, Texas. It has more than 100 stores across the U.S. and in Mexico. It is owned by H-A-B, which also has a grocery chain in Texas, H-S-B and a convenience store chain in Louisiana. The grocery chain was formed in 1881 and is based at the former site of a former grocery store in Houston's South Side. It was later moved to a new location in the South Houston suburb of South Houston, which is now part of H-C-B's South Houston area. The supermarket chain was established in 1882 and is currently based in the south Houston area of the city. It opened its first store in 1884 and has since expanded to other parts of Houston. It also has stores in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Jersey. It closed its South Houston store in 2007 and moved to another part of Houston in 2008.
