Missouri City is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, within the HoustonThe WoodlandsSugar Land metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 74,259, up from 67,358 in 2010. The city is mostly in Fort Bend County, with a small portion in Harris County. The Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway (BBB&C), began operating its first 20 miles (32 km) of rail line that stretched from Harrisburg (now Houston) to Stafford's Point (now Stafford) in August 1853. In 1890, two real estate investors from Houston (R.M. Cash and L.E. Luckle) purchased 4 sq mi (10 km²) of land directly on the route of the BBB &C. They advertised the property as "a land of genial sunshine and eternal summer" in St. Louis, Missouri, and its surrounding areas. The settlement was officially registered in Texas in 1894, and began to take shape as a railroad town along Main Street and Blue Ridge Road, now known as US 90A and Texas Parkway, respectively. On March 13, 1956, the community that began as a small settlement more than 55 years earlier was incorporated. Unlike neighboring Quail Valley, Missouri City has been a zoned city since the late 1980s. In the 1980s, an influx of middle-class African Americans became the majority of residents. Movement by black families has been characterized by neighborhood hopping, whereby families can afford to go farther west.

History

Missouri City is the primary city name, but also Sienna Plant, Sienna Plantation are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Missouri City, Texas. The Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway (BBB&C), began operating its first 20 miles (32 km) of rail line that stretched from Harrisburg (now Houston) to Stafford's Point (now Stafford) In 1890, two real estate investors from Houston (R.M. Many of them made Missouri City home after an economic downturn caused property values and interest rates to drop. In 2000, Missouri City was named a model city for middle class African Americans.

Geography

Missouri City is located in eastern Fort Bend County with a portion of the city extending north into Harris County. Missouri City is bordered by the city of Houston to the north and east, Stafford to the northwest, Sugar Land to the west, and Arcola to the southeast. Downtown Houston is 17 mi (27 km) to the northeast. Oyster Creek flows in a southerly direction through the municipality.According to the United States Census Bureau, Missouri City has a total area of 29.8 square miles (77.2 km²), of which 28.4 square miles are land and 1.4 sq mi (3.6 km²) is covered by water. Former communities annexed into Missouri City have included: DeWalt, Trammels, Fresno, Fifth Street, and Sienna Plantation. The city has a population of 2,816. It is located on the Brazos River, which is a tributary of the Red Cypress River. The river flows through the city and empties into the Texas Gulf Coast. It was once known as "Missouri Bay" and was the site of an oil refinery. It has been named after Missouri City, Texas, where the city was founded in the 1800s. The current name is derived from the name of Missouri City's first post office, which was established in 1881. The name Missouri City was first used in the 19th century by a German-speaking community. The town was named after the Missouri River, a river that once flowed through the area.

The racial makeup of the city was 24.9% non-Hispanic White, 46.1% African American, 0.4% Native American, 16.2% Asian, and 2. 9% from two or more races. Parks and recreation

The Missouri City Parks and Recreation Department is a Texas Gold Medal Award-winning department. The department maintains and operates a wide variety of park and natural areas, trails, athletic complexes and other facilities. The Parks Department currently maintains 20 developed parks totaling 393 acres (159 ha) Park amenities include multiple lighted sports fields, lakes, playgrounds, splash pad, and walking trails, as well as boating and fishing sites. The Missouri City Recreation and Tennis Center is the heart of the recreation division and houses the majority of the city's recreation and fitness classes. The center features 13 tennis courts, 4 batting cages, a cardio/weight room, multi-purpose rooms, locker rooms and a full-size gymnasium. The city's historic Freedom Tree Park is named after the Freedom Tree, which sits along Misty Hollow Drive between Glenn Lakes and Lake Olympia boulevards, at the former Palmer Plantation site. The parks and recreation department has daytime and evening recreational programs and provides numerous special events throughout the year. It is also the home of the Missouri City YMCA, a non-profit organization that provides youth and adults with a wide range of sports and fitness programs. It was founded in the early 1900s and is located on the site of a former cotton plantation. It has been named after a former plantation owner, who owned the land for more than 100 years. The park is one of the oldest parks in Missouri City, Texas, with a history dating back to the early 1800s.

Education

The Fort Bend County portion of Missouri City is served by Fort Bend Independent School District, while the Harris County portion is served. The entire city is also served by the Houston Community College System. There are 13 private primary and secondary schools in Missouri City.Divine Savior Academy at Sienna Campus is a Christian preschool, elementary, and middle school of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The Missouri City Branch of the Fort Bend county Libraries system, opened in June 1992, is across the street from the City Hall complex and the Missouri City Civic Center. It was the first of four branches built with 1989 bond funds. It is located on the former Missouri City High School site, which is now home to Missouri City Middle School and E. A. Jones Elementary School. The former combined elementary school site now houses Lakeview Elementary School, and the high school site is home to Annie Wilcox Elementary. The city is zoned to schools in the city limits of Houston. It also has its own high school, Elkins High School, as well as Dulles High School and First Colony Middle and Clements High School. Some areas of Missouri city are served by other schools, such as Blue Ridge Elementary and Lakeview Middle School. It has a public library, which was built in 1992, and is located across the road from the city hall complex. The library was designed by Hall/Merriman Architects, and opened with a 1,731.9-square-foot (1,732.9 m2) branch.

Transportation

Missouri City is crossed by US 90A, Beltway 8 (Sam Houston Tollway), Fort Bend Toll Road, State Highway 6, FM 1092 (Murphy Road), FM 2234 (Texas Parkway), and FM 3345 (Cartwright Road) Other nearby highways are US 59 to the northwest and Interstate 610 (Loop 610) to the northeast. Missouri City does not have public transportation within the city limits itself, but it is part of the service area of METRO. METRO operates the Missouri City Park and Ride located on Beltway8 and Fondren Road. The US 90 a/Southwest Rail Corridor project was put on hold on September 28, 2012.Discussions continue on commuter service along US 90a from METRORail's Fannin South station. Expansion westward awaits, among other things, formation of a transportation district or other funding means for communities that are not now in the METRO service area. The city is home to the Texas Medical Center, which has a METRO Transit Center and a number of other medical centers. The Missouri City Express runs from the Medical Center to Sharpstown and Westheimer, and from Sharpstown to the Hiram Clarke Transit Center. It also runs from HiramClarke to the Sharpstown-Hiram Clarke transit center, and the Texas medical center Express to the Houston Medical Center Transit Center, where it terminates at the Houston-Fannin station. The METRO Service Area Plan calls for the city to be part of a larger transportation district.
