Cheneyville is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is part of the Alexandria, Louisiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 625 at the 2010 census. The town is significant in the history of the Restoration Movement associated with Alexander Campbell. In 1843 most of the membership of a Baptist congregation, under the leadership of William Prince Ford, became a Church of Christ. Ford is also known as the original enslaver of Solomon Northup, the main character in the feature film, Twelve Years a Slave. State Senator C. H. "Sammy" Downs lived in Cheneyville, where his son, the retiring veteran Rapide Parish District Attorney, James C. "Jam" Downs, was born. Cheneyville has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km²), all land. In the 2020 United States census, there were 468 people, 275 households, and 156 families residing in the town. There were 267 households, out of which 28.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.7% were married couples living together, 26.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% were non-families. The racial makeup of the town was 33.07% White, 65.70% African American, 0.55% from other races, and 0.33% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.33%. The median income for a household was $21,044, and the median for a family was $17,044.
History
Cheneyville is significant in the history of the Restoration Movement associated with Alexander Campbell. In 1843 most of the membership of a Baptist congregation, under the leadership of William Prince Ford, became a Church of Christ. Ford is also known as the original enslaver of Solomon Northup, the main character in the feature film, Twelve Years a Slave. Northup was an African-American who had been born free, but kidnapped in Washington, D.C., and sold to Ford in New Orleans in 1841. The Cheneyville Christian Church is the oldest congregation associated with the Restoration movement in Louisiana. Campbell visited the congregation in 1857 and was favorably impressed by its fellowship between the races. The town was named for settler William Cheney, who came to the area in the early 1800s. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, near the junction of I-10 and I-20. It has a population of about 2,000 people, about half of whom live in the town of Cheneyville. It was founded in 1843 by William Cheney and his son, William Cheney. The church was founded by William Ford, who was influenced by Campbell's writings, and later became the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The congregation is still in existence today, and is located in Cheneyville, Louisiana. It also has a sister church, the Cheneyville Baptist Church, which was established in 1845. It's located on I- I- 10, near I- I- 20, and has about 1,000 members.
