Breaux Bridge is a small city in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population is 8,139 as of the 2010 census, up from 7,281 in 2000. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Breaux Bridge was officially designated the Crawfish Capital of the World by former Speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives Bob Angelle. It hosts an annual Crawfish Festival, and is regionally noted for listing nicknames in its telephone directory. The city has a total area of 6.7 square miles (17 km²), of which 6.6 square miles of it is land and 0.1 square mile (0.26 km²) is water. In 1799, Breaux built a footbridge across the Bayou Têche to help ease the passage across for his family and neighbors. When traveling directions were given, residents would often instruct people to "go to Breaux's bridge..." This was later adopted as the city's name. In 1847, a church parish was created; and 12 years later, the area was officially incorporated. It was named after Agricole Breaux, an Acadian pioneer who arrived in the area in 1765 and built a suspension footbridge in 1786. The town's name is derived from the French word for bridge, "Pont-Breaux" or "Pont de Breaux," which means "Bridge of Breaux" in Cajun French and "Breaux de Pays" in English.

History

Scholastique Picou Breaux founded Breaux Bridge, Louisiana at the age of 33. She developed the area by selling land lots to other Acadian settlers. In 1847, a church parish was created; and 12 years later, the area was officially incorporated. When traveling directions were given, residents would often instruct people to "go to Breaux's bridge..." This was later adopted as the city's name. The town is located on the banks of the Bayou Têche, which runs through the center of the city. The city is one of the oldest incorporated cities in the U.S., having been founded on August 25, 1829. It is the only city in Louisiana to be named after a single person, and the only one in the state to have been founded by a woman in the 19th century.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.7 square miles (17 km²) of which 6.6 square miles is land and 0.1 sq miles (0.26km²) is water. The city is home to the University of New Mexico's football team, the Bulldogs. The town is also the home of the New Mexico State University women's basketball team, which won the state championship in 2010. The U.N. Women's Basketball Team won the national championship in 2012. The team also won the gold medal in the women's division in the 2010 Winter Olympics. The men's team won the silver medal in 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, and the bronze medal in 2014 Winter Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the only city in the United States to have won a gold medal or more in the Winter Olympics since the games began in 1998. The first gold medal was awarded in the 1964 Winter Olympics, when the city was awarded for its contribution to the creation of the Winter Games. The last gold medal went in the 1968 Summer Olympics, which was won by the city's baseball team. The current gold medal is awarded for the 1998 Winter Olympics for the first time in the history of the city, in which the city played a role in the opening ceremony. It was also the first year that the city won a silver medal for the Games of the Summer Olympics. It also won a bronze medal for its efforts in the 1976 Summer Games, which were held in New Mexico.

Education

The city of Breaux Bridge is zoned to five schools. Public schools are operated by the St. Martin Parish School Board. Private schools include St. Bernard Elementary (Grades PreK-8) and Louisiana Christian School (Grade Pre-K-12) The parish is part of the Louisiana School Service Board, which was formed in the 1970s. The board was formed to provide services to students in need of special education services. The school board also provides services to parents and guardians of the children it cares for. The parish has a population of about 2,000. It is the second-largest parish in the state, after St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. The city is home to the Louisiana State Museum, which is open to the public in the evenings and on the weekends. It also houses the Louisiana Museum of Fine Arts, which opened in the 1950s. It was the first state museum in the U.S. to be located in the parish, opening in 1959. The museum is located on the campus of St. Mary's College of Technology, which also opened in 1960. It has a museum of fine arts, including art galleries, galleries, and a library. It opened its doors to the community in the 1960s. In the 1980s, the parish added a sixth school, Louisiana State University of the Arts and Sciences, which offers classes in English, French, Spanish, and other languages. The district also added a high school, BreauxBridge High School, in the late 1990s.
