Hickman is a city in Lancaster County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Lincoln, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded by Reverend C.H. Heckman and incorporated in 1885. There are several restaurants in Hickman, including Subway, East Meets West, Godfather´s, and The Mettle Grill. There is also a bar located downtown. The median age in the city was 31.8 years, with 51.7% male and 48.3% female. The population was 1,657 at the 2010 census, with 98.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0,2% Asian, and 0.9% from two or more races. The U.S. Census Bureau says the city has a total area of 0.72 square miles (1.86 km²), all land. The average household size is 2.82, and the average family size is 3.22. It has a high school with 160 students. The school district has an enrollment of 160. The high school is located in the Forest School Arboretum, which was built in the 1930s. The elementary school is in the Lincoln Forest School District, which opened in the 1950s. It was the first high school in the area to open in the 1960s. In the 1990s, the high school was the only one in the district with more than 100 students. It also has a junior high and high school.

History

Hickman is the primary city name, but also Holland are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Hickman, Nebraska. Hickman was founded in 1872 by Reverend C.H. Heckman and Samuel Egger. The city was incorporated as Hickman in 1885. Prior to 1866, the land was open prairie. It is located on the route of the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad from Rulo, Nebraska to Lincoln, Nebraska. It was originally known as Heckman; named after founder Reverend Heckman. The name was misspelled on the plat when it was submitted to Lancaster County for recording, and Hickman was chosen instead of Heckman for the city's name. The town is located near the Salt Creek, which is a tributary of the Platte River. It has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town of Hickman. The city is located in the U.S. state of Nebraska, and is located along the Nebraska-Iowa state line. It also has a small portion of the state of South Dakota, where it is known as South Dakotas. The population of the city is 1,000. It lies on the Uchison-Nebraska Railroad route. The city is located on the Missouri River, which runs through the center of the city. Hickman is home to the Hickman High School, which was founded in 1903. The school is located in the town of Hickman, which is also the site of the town's only high school, which opened in 1904. The town has a population of about 1,000 people, most of whom live in the central part of the community. It is the only town in the state to have a high school in its name, with the exception of one that was built in the early 20th century. It also has a post office, which closed in the 1950s and 1960s. It was reopened in the 1970s and is now the location of the state's second-largest city, with 1,200 residents. It has a history dating back to the early 1800s, when the town was first founded. State Department has a training center on the city's outskirts. It is the only city in the state to have a military base on the U.,S. National Guard Training Area, which was established in the 1950s. It was the first military base in the United States to be built on a National Guard base, and the only one in the South. It has been the site of military training since the early 1960s, when the Army began using it as a training base for the first time. It also has a military air base, which has been used since the 1970s for the training of the Army National Guard and the Army Air Corps. The National Guard is based in the base's Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
