History

Ballwin is the primary city name, but also Ellisville, Manchester, Wildwood are acceptable city names or spellings, Winchester on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. Ballwin was established in 1837. The community was named for John Ball, who settled at the town site in 1804. A post office called Ballwin has been in operation since 1866. The town has a population of about 1,000 people. It is located on U.S. Route 60, near the junction of US Route 60 and US Highway 20. The nearest large town to Ballwin is the town of Bakersfield, California, which is about 60 miles away. The post office in Ballwin was opened on November 1, 1837, and closed on December 31, 1866, when it was replaced by a new post office. It was named after Ball, a man who settled in the area in the early 1800s. He is credited with helping to establish the town in its current location in 1838. He died in 1839. The orphanage is known as the South African Orphanage, and it is located in the town of South Africa's capital city of Johannesburg. It is the only orphanage of its kind in the country, and is run by a group of volunteers called the South Africa Orphans' Association. The South African orphanage was established in the early 1900s and is currently located in Johannesburg's suburb of KwaZulu-Natal. It was the first orphanage in the world to be established in that region.
