According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.99 square miles (23.28 km²) The community was named for John Ball, who settled at the town site in 1804. A post office called Ballwin has been in operation since 1866. The town has a population of about 1,000 people. It is located on U.S. Route 60, near the junction of US Route 60 and US Highway 20. The nearest large town to Ballwin is the town of Bakersfield, California, which is about 60 miles away. The post office in Ballwin was opened on November 1, 1837, and closed on December 31, 1866, when it was replaced by a new post office. It was named after Ball, a man who settled in the area in the early 1800s. He is credited with helping to establish the town in its current location in 1838. He died in 1839.
