Alhambra is part of the Metro-East region of the St. Louis, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name was inspired by Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving. The first cooperative soybean processing unit in Illinois was located in the village. It began full production on March 1, 1945. The village is located at 38°5319N 89°4357W (38.888614, -89.732616). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.768 square miles (1.99 km²) (or 98.96%) is land and 0.008 sq miles (0.02 km²), (or 1.04%) is water. It is located in Madison County, Illinois, near the city of Madison. The population of the village was 681 at the 2010 Census, up from 630 at the 2000 census. The median income for a household in thevillage was $36,818, and the median family income was $53,214. The per capita income for the village is $16,124. About 3.1% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.6% of those age 65 or over. The town is located on the Illinois River, which runs through the center of the town. The river is a tributary of the Mississippi River. History
Alhambra was laid out in 1849. The name was inspired by Tales of the Alhambra by Washington Irving. It began full production on March 1, 1945. It was the first cooperative soybean processing unit in Illinois. It is now owned and operated by a private company. It has been in operation since the 1970s and is still in operation today. It produces soybeans, corn, and soybeans for the U.S. market. It also produces animal feed for the livestock industry. The company is based in Illinois, but also has operations in Wisconsin and Indiana. It employs more than 1,000 people, mostly in the Chicago area, and has a workforce of about 2,000. It manufactures soybeans and other soybean products for the United States market and for the international market, as well as soybean oil and other feed for other markets. It produced its first soybean crop in 1945 and began producing soybeans in 1946. It had a total production capacity of about 1.5 million bushels, or 1.6 million tons, in the 1950s and 1960s. It currently produces about 2 million bushes of soybeans a year, or about 1 million tons of soybean meal. It processes about 1,200,000 tons of grain a year.
