Georgetown is a city in Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 3,143. Georgetown was established in 1826 and was platted by James Haworth with the length of a grapevine. The Paris and Danville Railroad was built in 1871, and the "Interurban" started carrying passengers from Georgetown to Danville sometime after 1900. According to the 2010 census, Georgetown has a total area of 0.14 square miles (0.36 km²), all land. The city is part of the Danville, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the towns of Georgetown, Danville and Mount Vernon. It is located on Illinois Route 1 / U.S. Route 150 about 13 miles (21 km) south of the county seat of Danville. In the 2000 census, there were 3,628 people, 1,470 households, and 1,004 families residing in the city. There were 1,564 housing units at an average density of 970.2 per square mile (374.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.53% White, 2.73% African American, 0.28% Native American,0.06% Asian, and 0.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population. The median income for a household in theCity was $33,852. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.00.

History

Georgetown was established in 1826 and was platted by James Haworth with the length of a grapevine. The Paris and Danville Railroad was built in 1871, and the "Interurban" started carrying passengers from Georgetown to Danville sometime after 1900. The town may have been named after George Beckwith, since Danville had been named for Dan Beckwith. Another possibility is that it was named after James Hawthor's son George. The first post office was set up in 1828. The first home was established by Henry Johnson in 1820. Georgetown was named for the town of Georgetown, Pennsylvania, which was founded in 1788. It was the site of the U.S. Civil War Battle of Georgetown and the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1815. It is located on the Ohio River, near the border with Illinois. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the town. The city is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which opened its doors in 1823. It also has a college, the College of Arts and Sciences, which is located in nearby Danville. The Georgetown-Danville section of the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to New Jersey, opened in 1838. It connects to the New York City area by the Paris and Paris Railroad.
