Lisle (LY-l) is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 22,390 at the 2010 census, and in 2019 the population was recorded to be 23,270. Lisle is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor. It is also the headquarters of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III. In July 2007, Lisle was ranked No. 20 in Money magazine's list of "100 Best Places to Live" and No. 17 on their 2009 list of the "Best Places for the Rich and Single" In 1832, brothers James C. Hatch and Luther A. Hatch began a small farming community named "DuPage" or "East DuPage" because of its proximity to the east branch of the DuPage River. In 1849, DuPage formed its first townships, and the name Lisle. was first proposed by early settler Alonzo B. Chatfield of Lisle, New York; the proposal was accepted, creating the Lisle Township. The village was incorporated on June 26, 1956, and was also named after Lisle, New York. On July 4, 2006 Lisle celebrated its 50th birthday by hosting the state's biggest fireworks display. In 2009, the town was named after the late S. L. Smith of Chicago, who was a prominent businessman and philanthropist in the Chicago area. The town is located at 41°4733N 88°0518W (41.7924954, -88.0882100) and has a total area of 7.021 square miles (18.18 km²).

History

The town of Lisle was settled in 1832, by brothers James C. Hatch and Luther A. Hatch after the close of the Black Hawk War. Lisle experienced many firsts in the decade of 1830s during the earliest years of settlement in DuPage County. In 1864, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived along with a newly constructed depot. On July 4, 2006, Lisle celebrated its 50th birthday by hosting the state's biggest fireworks display. The village was incorporated on June 26, 1956, and was also named after Lisle, New York. The name Lisle name was first proposed by early settler Alonzo B. Chatfield, who was from Lisle, New York; the proposal was accepted, creating the Lisle Township. Another story is that the town was named after the late S.Lisle Smith of Chicago; he was a member of the First Congregational Church of DuPage. The first post office was managed by John Thompson in 1834, and the first log schoolhouse was constructed in that same year and later replaced, in 1837, with a frame structure. The Lisle Station depot was later rebuilt by the CB&Q Railroad in 1874, but it was later destroyed by a fire. Today, commuter rail service is provided by Metra. The town is located on the west branch of the DuPage river, near present-day Naperville, Illinois. It was named "DuPage" or "East DuPage" because, of its proximity to the east branch ofthe DuPage River.

Lisle is home to the Lisle High School, which was founded in 1872. The school is located in the town's historic center. Lisses is also home to Lisle Middle School, where the school opened in 1874. Lissa High School was founded by the Lissens in 1876. The town is located on the east side of theDuPage River, which runs through Lissen. The DuPage is a tributary of the Chicago River, and runs through the center of the town. Lissy High School is also the home of the Lizzes High School. The high school was established in 1878. It is the oldest high school in the U.S. and has a history of more than 100 years. It was the first high school to open in Lisle in 1881. It has been the site of Lissons High School since 1883. The Lissans High School opened in 1896. The current high school has been in existence since 1891. The village has a population of 1,856. LISSES is a suburb of Lizzles, Illinois.

The Lisle Library contains a collection of materials, resources, technology and digital content. It also hosts local art exhibits.
