Homewood is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,463 at the 2020 census. It is bordered by Chicago Heights and Flossmoor to the south, Hazel Crest to the west, East Hazel Crest and Harvey to the north, Glenwood to the east, and South Holland to the northeast. Its historic downtown centered at the intersections of Dixie Highway and Ridge road has a number of small businesses including coffee shops and restaurants, salons, a music shop, bookstore, La Banque boutique hotel, and the Homewood Science Center. The majority of students in the area go to the local public high school, which has its own school district, 233-time winner of U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best High Schools" award. The Izaak Walton Preserve is a 193 acre open space filled with woodland, lakes, and diverse wildlife carved out from an ancient glacial lake and sandy shoreline. The village is 22 miles (35 km) due south of The Loop/downtown Chicago at 800 west and 18300 south on the Chicago grid system. The ancient shoreline can be seen clearly as the sand ridge along Ridge Road. It is located on the Calumet Shoreline, which is part of the Chicago River watershed. Children in grades K-8 attend schools under the jurisdiction of Homewood public school district 153. Some may attend Flossmoor School District 161 if they live west of Western Avenue and south of 183rd street. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago operated a Catholic school, St. Joseph School. It had 64 students in 2017. H-F is a three-time winner of the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Award for excellence. HF also owns WHFH 88.5, the highest powered high school radio station with 1,500 watts. The majority of students in the area then go on to attend the local public high school, HomewOOD-Floss moor High School. The school district has three schools: Winston Churchill Elementary, Willow Elementary, and James Hart Junior High School, for children in grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. It is located in the heart of the Chicago suburb of Chicago's Englewood. The district also has its own school district, school district 233, for students in grades 9-14. It closed in 2017 and is located near the University of Illinois at Chicago, where students are enrolled in the college preparatory program. Rail transportation

Amtrak provides rail service to Homewood. Metra also provides commuter rail service on the Metra Electric line between Millennium Station and University Park. Canadian National Railways has a large freight classification yard and major shop facilities in the city. The city is home to the American headquarters of Canadian National railways. The City of New Orleans is served by two Amtrak trains, the Saluki and the Illini. The Saluki operates between Chicago and Carbondale, Illinois. The Illini operates from Chicago to Kankakee and points south through Tennessee and Mississippi to New Orleans. It is also served by Amtrak trains 390/391 and 392/393 daily in the morning and afternoon/evening. It also serves Amtrak Train 58, the northbound City of NEW Orleans, daily with service to Chicago Union Station. The train is scheduled to depart the city at 7:44 am daily and at 8:54 pm daily. It operates between the city and the city of KANKakee, Illinois, and points north through Mississippi and Tennessee. It has service to the City of N.O. and points east and south through the state of Mississippi and Alabama. It stops at Chicago Union station at 7.44 am and 8.54pm daily for the return trip. It leaves the city every day at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and again at 8.30pm and 8:50pm. It travels between the cities of Chicago and Kankakese and New Orleans on the Chicago-New Orleans rail line.

Sarah Bloom Raskin, 13th United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, was born and raised in Homewood. Video game designer Brian Colin is a native of the area. Singer Jermaine Stewart, best known for "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off", was born in the neighborhood. Former Mayor Manny Hoffman is a member of the Illinois House of Representatives. 1st United States Ambassador to South Sudan, Susan Page, was raised in the area, as was rapper Juice Wrld, who was raised and raised by his family in the city.
