First known as Tioga, it was formally established as Bensenville in 1873 along the Milwaukee Road (now Canadian Pacific) right-of-way. The community is named after Bensen, Germany, a village in the municipality of Sudwalde. History

The Barker-Karpis Gang used a house on May Street to hide kidnap victims William Hamm, Jr in 1933 and Edward Bremer in 1934, who they had kidnapped from Saint Paul, Minnesota. The gang used the house to hide two kidnap victims. The house was later used by the St. Paul Police Department to hide suspects in the 1934 kidnapping of EdwardBremer, who was found dead in the house. The home was also used to hide the bodies of two other kidnap victims, William Hamm Jr and William Hamm Sr, who were found in 1934 and 1933. The property was later sold to the City of Saint Paul for $1,000,000. It is still in use as a private residence today, and was used as a police station in the 1960s and 1970s. It was also the site of the infamous "Barker Karpis Kidnapping" in 1933, when two of the gang's victims were taken from the city by the gang. The Gang also used the home to hide other victims, including William Hamm's son William Hamm III, in 1934. The street is still used today by the city's police department, which still uses the house as a public residence. It has also been used for other purposes, including as a place to hide victims in the 1970s and 1980s, such as the kidnapping of William Hamm IV, Jr, and his brother William Hamm II, Jr. The building is still owned by the City, which uses it as a tourist attraction.

Fenton High School serves both Bensenville and Wood Dale. W.A. Johnson SchoolPrivate serves 3-year-old to 8th grade. Zion-Concord Lutheran School is a private school for 3-to-8th-graders.
