Mundelein is a village in Lake County, Illinois, United States and a northern suburb of Chicago. Per the 2020 census, the population was 31,560. The community now known as Mundelein has been inhabited since at least 1650, when the Potawatomi people were known to have been trading with French fur traders. Peter Shaddle (for whom a street is named) was the first known settler, building a log cabin in the area now owned by St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in 1835. The next settlers were tradesmen escaping from England's industrial depression, and named the city "Mechanics Grove" The community grew and (while still unincorporated) changed its name to "Holcomb", in honor of John Holcomb, a person who was active in the region's development. In July 1909, the community became "Area", after a local educational entrepreneur named Arthur Sheldon, who bought 600 acres (2.4 km²) near town and built a school on it. At one time, it boasted 10,000 students, many of them women (which was unusual for 1909). In 1915, Archbishop George Mundele in (later Cardinal) of Chicago purchased the property from Sheldon after the Area campus closed to re-establish the Archdiocese's University of Saint Mary of. the Lake. The original Village Hall, built in 1929 with a few additions over the years, was used until June 2014. In the 1970s the community was largely residential with a little light industrial development.

History

Mundelein is the primary city name, but also Hawthorn Wds, Hawthorn Woods, Long Grove are acceptable city names or spellings. Geography

Mundelein is located at 42°15'47.0"N 88°00'14.4"W (42.263049, -88.004010).According to the 2010 census, Mundelein has a total area of 9.969 square miles (25.82 km²) (or 96%) of which 9.57 sq miles (24.79km²) is land and 0.399sq miles (1.03 km²), or 4%) is water. The city is home to a population of about 2,000 people. The town is located in the province of Haut-Lorraine, in the north of the state. It is the only town in the state to be part of the Haut Lorraine Autonomous Region. The state's capital is the city of Lauterbrue, which is in the region of the same name as the town. It has a population in excess of 1,200 people (1,000 in 2010 census figures). The city's population was 2,100 in 2010, up from 1,000 at the start of the 20th century. It was the first city in the area to become a state in 1921. It also has the highest percentage of people living in poverty (4%) of all the states in the U.S. and the lowest percentage of residents in the world (2.7%) in 2010. The area has a high rate of unemployment (4.3%) and a low rate of crime (0.7%).

Demographics

As of the 2010 US Census, there were 31,064 people living in the village. The racial makeup of the village was 72.29% White, 1.52% African American, 0.65% Native American, 8.77% Asian,0.03% Pacific Islander, 14.18% from other races, and 2.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 30.08% of the population. The median income for a household was $69,651, and the median incomes for a family was $75,083. By 2017, median incomes were estimated at $86,336 per household and $96,813 per family. This table excludes Latinos from the racial categories and assigns them to a separate category. The US Census treats Hispanic/Latino as an ethnic category. Hispanics/Latinos can be of anyrace. The village has a population of 30,935 people, 9,858 households, and 7,718 families. The population density was 3,587.5 inhabitants per square mile (1,385.1/km²). There were 10,167 housing units at an average density of 1,179.0 per squaremile (455.2/ km²). The village's population was spread out, with 31.4% under the age of 18, 8,3% from 18 to 24, 36.0% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who were 65 years of age or older.

Economy

According to Mundelein's 2019 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the top employers in the village are: KPMG, Wachovia and Siemens. The village's economy is based on manufacturing, construction and wholesale trade. It also has a service sector based in the town's downtown area. The town's top employers are KPMM, Siemens and Wachowski. The top employers for the village's service sector are: Siemens, Waukesha and Waukegan. The unemployment rate is 3.7 per cent, the unemployment rate for the town is 4.1 per cent and it's 5.2 per cent for the city. The economy is centered on manufacturing and the service sector. The city's economy has a strong service sector, including construction, wholesale trade and retail trade. In the village, the main employers are: Waukovia, Siemen and Wausau. The U.S. military is the village’s largest employer, followed by the city's police force and fire department. The state's top employer is the city of Mundele in the municipality's business district. The largest employer in the city is the local business district, the town hall. It is also the largest employer for the community's residents, according to the 2019 Comprehensive annual Financial Report. The biggest employers in Mundeleine are the city’'s three schools: Mundeleini, Mundelei and Mundeleinsville. The school district has the largest number of non-profit organizations.

School districts

Four public school districts serve Mundelein residents: Hawthorn School District 73, Diamond Lake School District 76, Fremont School District 79 and Consolidated High School District 120. The following parochial schools are located in Mundeleine: Santa Maria del Popolo School (Catholic) - K-8 (Closed in 2014) and St. Mary of the Annunciation School (Catholic) (Close in 2019) School District 75 boundaries changed significantly in 2003-2004, in response to studies indicating sharp disparities in ethnic makeup among various schools in the district. This rebalancing has placed some boundaries through the middle of some houses, and made drawing lines very difficult to describe.

Transportation

Mundelein has a station on Metra's North Central Service, which provides weekday rail service between Antioch and Chicago Union Station. A small private airport, Air Estates Airport, is located northwest of Mundelein. The city is located on the Chicago River, which runs through the center of the city. It has a population of about 2,000, according to the city's 2010 census. The town is located in the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the city of Chicago and parts of Cook and Waukegan, Illinois. It also has a section of Lake County, Illinois, which is home to the town's only public airport, the Chicago-Illinois International Airport. Mundelein Review (Pioneer Press) and Mundelein News (Arlington Heights) are two of the area's leading newspapers. The Daily Herald is published in Arlington Heights, and the Daily Review is based in Mounds View, a suburb of Mounds Park. The town has a population of just over 100,000. The city is home to the University of Wisconsin-Mounds Park and the Mounds School of Medicine and Dentistry, which was founded in 1894. It is also home to a number of colleges, including Mounds College and Mounds High School, which were founded in 1903 and 1805. The village has a history dating back to the early 19th century, when it was known as Mounds Point. It was the site of the town's first newspaper, the Mound House, which opened in 1808. It's now known as the Mounded House, and was home to many of the city's early settlers. The community is known for its arts and culture, including music, dance and theater.
