Carter is a census-designated place (CDP) in Chouteau County, Montana, United States. Its name was changed from Sidney in 1905 to honor Thomas H. Carter, the state's first congressional representative. The CDP has a total area of 2.9 square miles (7.5 km²), of which 0.004 square miles of it is water. The city's Hall of Fame honors celebrities who have visited the city. Professional wrestler CM Punk was inducted into the hall of Fame on May 15, 2010. Carter is located at 47°4653N 110°5721W (47.781252, -110.955800). It is along U.S. Route 87, which leads northeast 14 miles (23 km) to Fort Benton, the county seat, and southwest 26 miles (42km) to Great Falls. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Carter has a semi-arid climate, abbreviated "BSk" on climate maps. It is located at 47.4°N, 110.7°W, and has a latitude of 47.3°S, and a longitude of 110.5°W. It has a population of 1,816. The CDP is located on U.N. Highway 87 and is located near the town of Great Falls, Montana, about 26 miles (42 km) south of the U. S. state capital of Rapid City. The town has an area of 0.004 sq miles (0.01 km²), or 0.14% of its total area, is water. The area has a rainfall of 1.2 inches (4.4 mm) per year. The city has a temperature of 4.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.8 degrees Celsius).

It was the site of a World War II-era naval base, and was once known as the "Battle of the Bulge" because of its strategic location. The U.N. World Heritage Site was built in the late 1800s.
