Bemidji is a city and the county seat of Beltrami County, in northern Minnesota, United States. The city is the largest commercial center between Grand Forks, North Dakota and Duluth. It is also the self-proclaimed "curling capital" of the U.S. and the alleged birthplace of legendary Paul Bunyan. The name derives from the Ojibwe Buh-mid-ji-ga-maug (Double-Vowel orthography: bemijigamaag), meaning "a lake with crossing waters". This name stems from the way that the Mississippi River flows directly through the Lake. Near Bemidji are the Red Lake Indian Reservation, White Earth Indian Res reservation, and the Leech Lake Indian reservation. Bemidsi was incorporated on May 20, 1896, and by that time there were three publishing companies, Alber Kaiser, The Bimidji Pioneer, and The Beltramsi County News. The population was 14,574 at the 2020 census. According to 2021 census estimates, the city is estimated to have a population of 15,279, making it the biggest commercial center in the state. The town is home to the Indian Health Service, which provides health care for Native American people. It was named after Shay-now-ish-kung, who moved to the area in 1882 and became the first permanent settler of the area. He informed early white settlers of the name of the lake, but they misunderstood him to mean that bemidji was his own name, Consequently, he was known to them as Chief Bemide.

Etymology

Bemidji is the primary city name, but also Turtle River, Wilton are acceptable city names or spellings, Grant Valley, Jones, Northern, Nymore, Port Hope, Sugar Bush, Ten Lake on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. It is also home to a number of colleges, including Minnesota State University, Mankato, and Mounds View University. It also has a chapter of the American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of History and Science, which was established in 1872. It was named after the first U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln, who was born in 1858. The town is located on the banks of the Minnesota River, which flows through the city.

History

Bemidji Township was created on February 28, 1866, by an act of legislation. They called the lake Bemidjigumaug, meaning "river or crosswise". Freeman and Besty Doudic claimed 160 acres west of and including present-day Diamond Point. The Porter Nye family soon followed them on the east bank of the Mississippi River, close to Carson's Trading Post and Carl Carlson's blacksmith shop. They were seeking new timber for Walker, the Pillsburys, Henry Akeley, Charles Ruggles and Frederick Weyerhaeuser, the barons of the baron of the forest. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Bemodji's business profited, providing the local economy, and services for the local area. They call the town "the oldest township" in the county, and is the county attorney declared the original Bemdji township illegal (no reason given) and the township reorganized on June 26, 1897. By 1900 the Village of Bem idji's population had grown to 2,000. The town is an important part of the local. economy, with Georgia- and. Potlatch, and Northwood Panelboard all having wlatch. and services. They are also the most popular place to buy and sell goods and services, and the best place to sell and sell them is the town's shopping mall, which is also a shopping mall. By the time there were three publishing companies, Alber Kaiser, The Bemidsi Pioneer, and The Beltrami County News, there were more than 10,000 visitors to the town.

Parks and recreation

The Paul Bunyan State Trail runs from Brainerd, Minnesota, and Lake Bemidji State Park. There are 400 lakes within 25 miles (40 km), 500 mi (800 km) of snowmobile trails, and 99 mi (160km) of cross-country ski trails. Art in the Park has been a summer highlight for BemIDji residents since 1967. The Minnesota Finlandia Ski Marathon is also held in Bemidsji every year. The town is near Chippewa National Forest, Itasca State Park, and Big Bog State Recreation Area, and state forest areas. There is also a bike trail around Lake Bimidji about 17 miles long, with rest stops along the way. In the early 21st century, dragon boat racing was the fastest growing water sport in the nation. The city is also home to the Minnesota Polar Days, also known as Winterfest, a weeklong festival that includes many different activities, such as a polar plunge, and sled derby, broomball, a 5k polar walk/run, curling, pond hockey, and a cornhole tournament. It is also the home of the Paul bunyan Triathlon, which takes place the third Saturday in August, and the Minnesota Finlandian Ski Marathon, which is held the third Sunday in November. It's also the birthplace of the Minnesota Vikings, who were founded there in 1894. The mayor and city council have been married for more than 50 years, and have a son and a daughter.

Geography

The largest earthquake on record for the Bemidji area was recorded on September 3, 1917. The epicenter was about 95 miles (153 km) away in Staples, Minnesota. The closest and most recent quake occurred in Walker, Minnesota, on September 27, 1982, with a magnitude of 2.0. The city has an area of 14.14 square miles (36.62 km²) According to the United States Census Bureau, of the city's area of land, 12.92 sq miles (33.46 km²), is land and 1.22sq miles (3.16km²) is water. Four-lane U.S. Route 2, U.S. Route 71 and Minnesota State Highway 197 are three of the main routes in the city. Minnesota State Highways 89 and 371 are nearby, as are Minnesota State roads 371 and 371. The largest city in the state is Bemidsjid, with an area measuring 14.4 square kilometres (7.7 square miles) and a population of 2,856. The nearest airport is Minneapolis-St. Paul, which is about 80 miles (130 km) to the east. BemIDSjid is located on the Minnesota River, which runs through the northern part of the state. It is about 50 miles (80 km) south of Minneapolis-Saint-Paul, the state's largest city. The BemIDsjid airport is located near the town of BemIDji, which has an elevation of 1,857 metres (3,854 ft).

The average mean annual temperature is 37.3 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest month is January with an average daily high of 16 degrees and a average daily low of 4 degrees. The warmest month of the year is July with anAverage annual humidity is 47%. The average annual snowfall is 41.1 inches and the average annual rainfall is 23.8 inches. Annual snowfall increased 5% in the 21st century vs. the 1930-1999 period, according to the National Weather Service. The Average day Lake Bemidjis freezes over is November 26 and the Average day the ice goes off the lake is April 26. The annual rainfall in the area increased by 5% over the last 100 years. The area has an average annual humidity of 47%. It has a short, hot summer and a long, cold winter. It has short, wet summers and short, cold winters. It is a Dfb climate, which means it has short and warm summers and long and wet winters, and a short and wet winter and wet autumn and spring. It also has long, hot summers and cold winters, which mean the winters are very long and very wet, with no end in sight. As of the census of 2010, there were 13,431 people, 5,339 households, and 2,557 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 79.4% White, 2.2% African American, 8.5% Native American, 0.8% Asian,0.1% Pacific Islander, and 9.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was2.83. The median age in theCity was 27.1 years. The city has a population density of 1,039.6 inhabitants per square mile (401.4/km²) The city's population is expected to rise to 14,574 by the 2020 census. It has a median age of 27 years and a median population of 6.2 million. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city will have a population of 14,573 by the year 2020. It is expected that the population will rise to 15,000 by that year. The population is predicted to reach 14,500 by the time the city's next census is held in 2026. It will be the largest city in the state, with an estimated population of 13,856. It also has the highest population growth rate of any U.N. member state, at 2.7%. The city is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of Ohio.

Economy

The largest employer is the hospital system, which employs more than 1,000 people. The second largest employers are the financial services industry, with over 1,200 employees. The third and fourth biggest employers are also the health care industry, and the retail industry. The fifth and sixth largest employers is the retail sector, with about 1,100 employees each. The seventh and eighth largest employers were the wholesale and distribution industries, with more than 100 employees each; the ninth and tenth largest were the publishing and publishing industries, each with over 100 employees. In the city's history, the economy has been the largest source of income for the majority of its residents. The economy has also been the biggest source of employment for many years, especially in the 1990s and early 2000s. The U.S. Census Bureau American Factfinder shows that the city has the third largest population in the state.

Government

Bemidji's government is made up of a mayor and a council, with the latter elected from five single-member districts or wards. The mayor is elected for a four-year term, and the council for a five-year terms. The city is located in the northern part of the Canadian province of Manitoba. The town has a population of around 2,000. It is home to the University of Manitoba and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers (CIMSE). The city's mayor is a member of the CIMSE board of directors, which is responsible for the development of the city's infrastructure.
