Murdock is a rural town in Swift County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 306 at the 2020 census. Murdock was incorporated in 1881. The city is part of the Kerhoven-murdock-Sunburg school district. The Murdock City Council voted to allow the Asatru Folk Assembly to use a former church as its gathering place on December 9, 2020. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.56 square miles (1.45 km²), all of which is land. U.S. Route 12 serves as a main route in the community. The post office has been in operation at Murdock since 1878. It is named for S. S. Murdocks, who was the first postmaster of the town. The town is located in Swift county, which is in the Upper Midwest region of the state. The 2010 census showed that the city had a population of 278 people, 117 households, and 74 families living in the city. In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 14.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.2% male and 51.8% female. For every 100 females, there were 96.3 males for a household in Murdock.

History

Murdock is the primary city name, but also De Graff are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Murdock. Murdock was platted in 1881 by S. S. Murdock, and named for him. A post office has been in operation at Murdock since 1878. On December 9, 2020, the Murdock City Council voted to allow the Asatru Folk Assembly to use a former church as its gathering place. It will be the first time in the history of Murdock that a Folk Assembly has been established in the city. It is expected to be open to the public by the end of the year. The town is located on the banks of the Little Snake River, which runs through Murdock. It was named for S.S. Murdocks, who platted the town in 1878, and later incorporated it. The city was named after him, and is named for the town's first postmaster, who was also named S. S. Murdocks. It has a population of about 2,000 people, and was incorporated as a city in 1882. The post office was opened on September 1, 1878; it has been there ever since. The name Murdock means "murdock" or "the town of Murdocks" in English. It also means "the place where the river meets the stream" in the local dialect. The community's name is derived from the name of a local Native American tribe, the Mennonites, who lived in the area before the arrival of the U.S., called the "Mundock Indians".

Geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Cuyahoga River valley, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have been named after a former president or prime minister of the U.N. or a member of the House of Representatives. It was founded in 1858 by the Spanish-American community of the same name, who settled the area in the late 19th century. It has a population of about 2,000 people, most of whom live in or near the city's downtown area, which is located in the eastern part of the town. It also has a number of smaller communities, including the town of Puyallup, which was named after the town's first postmaster, who was killed in the Great Depression. The town is also known as the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place during World War II in the 1940s and 1950s, when the city was declared a state of emergency. The area is home to a large number of Native American tribes, many of whom have settled in the area since the early 1900s. The community has a history that dates back to the early 20th century, when it was first settled by Native Americans. In the early 1930s, the town was named for a Native American tribe that lived in the region. It became known as Puyalup.
