History
Gibbon originated as a railway town that was first settled by German and Scandinavian immigrants circa 1865. The town was incorporated in 1887 and named for General John Gibbon, a commandant at Fort Snelling from 1880 to 1882. By 1900, the town had grown to a population of 545. Gibbon is located on the U.S.-Canada border and was once part of the Canadian province of Alberta. It is now part of Alberta, Canada and is home to the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Climbing (CIMC) and the Canadian National Railway (CNR) The town of Gibbon was founded in 1865 and was named after General Gibbon. It was incorporated as a town in 18 87 and named after the General in 1882, when he was commandant of Fort Snell. It has been home to CIMC since 1900 and is now home to a community of about 2,000 people. It also has its own museum, the Gibbon Museum, which is located in the town's downtown area and was built in the early 1900s. The Gibbon River runs through the center of the town and is a popular tourist destination. It runs through Gibbon and is known as the "Gibbons River" because of the river's history of being used as a source of water for the city's water supply.
