DeForest is a village in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States, along the Yahara River. The population was 10,811 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was named for Isaac De Forest, who in 1856 bought the land on which the village sits today. Its name was long spelled "De Forest," but has since been changed to "DeForest." DeForest is located at 43°1445N 89°2045W (43.245751, 89.345869).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.49 square miles (19.40 km²), of which, 7.43 square miles of it is land and 0.16 sq miles (0.16 km²) is water. The racial makeup of the village was 93.3% White, 0.1% African American, 1.3%. Native American, and 1.6%. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 3.6% of the population. In the village, the population was spread out, with 31% under the age of 18, 6% from 24, 36% from 25 to 44, and 8.7% from 45 to 64. The average household size was 2.63.

Name

The village was named for Isaac De Forest, who in 1856 bought the land on which the village sits today. Its name was long spelled "De Forest," but has since been changed to "DeForest." The village is located on the banks of the Little River, which runs through the center of the village. The village has a population of about 2,000. It was once called De Forest but that name was changed to De Forest in the 1950s. The name has been changed again to DeForest. There were 3,499 housing units at an average density of 470.9 per square mile (181.8/km²) The racial makeup of the village was 93.3% White, 2.1% African American, 0.3%. Native American, 1.5% Asian, 1,2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 3.6%. The median income for a household in theVillage was $55,369. Males had a median income of $40,096 versus $28,000 for females. The per capita income for the Village was $21,089. About 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2. 7% of those under age 18 and 9.7 per cent of those age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.08. In 2009, DeForest Superintendent Dr. Jon Bales was honored by the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators as Wisconsin's 2009 Superintendent of the Year. The DeForest Area School District schools include:DeForest Area High School, Eagle Point Elementary School, Windsor Elementary School and Holum Center Half Day Kindergarten. The district also has a middle school, high school and a middle and high school that are under construction. The school district is located in the town of DeForest, Wisconsin, about 30 miles north of Madison, Wisconsin. It has a population of about 3,000 people. In 2009, the school district had a total enrollment of 4,000 students, with 2,000 of those being under the age of 12. It also had a high school, middle school and middle school that were under construction, with a middle/high school that is expected to open in September 2021.
