Sheboygan Falls is a city in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. Its population was 8,210 at the 2020 census. The city's downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the first Main Street Community in Wisconsin. It took its name from the nearby falls on the She Boygan River. The name was changed because a community in Racine County already held the same name. It is located along the SheBoygan River between its confluences with the Mullet and Onion Rivers near Lake Michigan. Rapids and a dam, which once supplied hydroelectric energy, prohibit most water transportation through the city. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.41 square miles (14.01 km²), of which, 5.28square miles (13.68 km²) is land and 0.13square miles(0.34km²) of it is water. As of the census of 2010, there were 7,775 people, 3,480 households, and 2,152 families residing in the city, with a population density of 1,472.5 inhabitants per square mile (568.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.05% White, 0.34% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American,0.30% Asian, and0.71% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

History

Sheboygan Falls took its name from the nearby falls on the Sheboygan River. The city was called Rochester for a brief time; the name was changed because a community in Racine County already held the same name. The name of the falls was changed to Sheboyggan Falls in the 1930s. The falls are located on the Wisconsin River, which runs through the city of Sheboygsville and into the town of Waukesha. It is the location of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which has a campus of the same name. It also has a chapter of the College of Wooster, which was founded in 1876. It was the site of the first college in Wisconsin, which opened in 1875. The university was founded by the son of a German immigrant, who moved to the area in the 19th century. Arts and culture

Sheboygan Falls is home to a nationally recognized downtown historic district, which promotes a mix of retail, office and service uses. The downtown is the jewel of the community which houses pedestrian network connecting neighborhoods, schools, parks and commercial areas. Tourism plays an increasing role in the downtown success with many destination retail businesses. The city is also home to the Sheboygan County Lions Club, American Legion Post 149, YMCA, Kiwanis Club, and Workbound, Inc.

Parks and recreation

Ducktona 500 - 3,000 plastic ducks race down the Sheboygan River for cash prizes every July. The Bull at Pinehurst Farms is a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course and one of the top 100 public golf courses in the United States. The Old Plank Road Trail is a 17-mile recreational trail that doubles as a snowmobile trail in winter. The County is the only county in Wisconsin designated a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. The county has built nearly 39 miles of off street bike trails and dozens of miles on on-street trails. The 17 mile Old Planked Road Trail runs from Sheboygen through Sheboygans Falls to Glenbeulah, WI. This trail doubles as an off-street bike trail in the winter and can be used by snowmobiles as well as a cross-country ski trail. The community has a full fitness center, aquatic center and day care at the YMCA, located in downtown Sheboyggan Falls. The town is also home to the Wisconsin State Fair, which runs from May through October. The city is also the home of the Wisconsin Brewers hockey team, who play in the WCHA World Series. The Wausau Marathon is held on the second Saturday of each month. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. and finishes at 9:00 p.M. on the third Saturday of the month.

Sheboygan Falls has six elected alderman from three districts elected for staggered two-year terms. The city has a population of more than 100,000.
