Elkhart Lake is a village in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 967 at the 2010 census. The area was first inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians and they named the area Me-shay-way-odeh-ni-bis, or Great Elk Heart Lake, because the lake resembles an elk's heart. In 1872 the Milwaukee and Northern Railroad came into Elkhart and brought more travelers. The village was incorporated in 1894 and is in the Town of Rhine. It is best known for hosting road races on public county roads during the 1950s. It later moved to a dedicated race track called Road America, which is located a few miles south of the village. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.29 square miles (3.34 km²), of which, 1.28 square miles of it is land and 0.01 square mile (0.03 km²) is water. The median age in the village was 48.9 years, with 50.4% male and 49.6% female. In the village, the population was spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 6.2% between the ages of 18 and 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 34.7%, and 21. 7% from 45 to 64. For every 100 females, there were 96.0 males.

History

The area was first inhabited by the Potawatomi Indians and they named the area Me-shay-way-odeh-ni-bis, or Great Elk Heart Lake, because the lake resembles an elk's heart. Few people traveled to the area until the 1860s when the Mississippi Railroad came to Glenbeulah, making it possible for them to take a stagecoach the rest of the way to Elkhart. In 1872 the Milwaukee and Northern Railroad came into Elkharts and brought more travelers. The area was incorporated as ElkhART Lake in 1894. The lake was named after the town where it was first settled. It is located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It was once part of the state of Iowa. The town is now part of Wisconsin and has a population of more than 2,000. It has been the site of several World War II-era battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg and Battle of the Bulge. It also hosted the opening of the Wisconsin State Fair in 1871 and the Wisconsin National Guard in 1872. The Wisconsin State Museum is in the town of Elkharted and was established in 1874. The state's first post office opened in 1875. It closed in 1881 and was replaced by a post office in 1883. The current post office was opened in 1888. The village of Elkart was founded in 1891. The city's name is still Elkhard.

Geography

The village is located on the banks of the Elkhart River, which runs through the center of the lake. The lake was named after the town of ElkhART, Wisconsin, which was founded in the 17th century. It is the only lake in the state to have been named after a person or a group of people, and the only one in the United States to be named after an animal or a place in the world. It was named for the town's founder, who was born in the area in the 18th century, and later moved to the town in the 19th century and died in the 1920s. The town's name is derived from the word "elkhart", which means "lake" or "hill" in German. It has a population of about 1,000. The water level in the lake is around 1,300 feet (300 meters) above sea level. There were 706 housing units at an average density of 551.6 per square mile (213.0/km²) The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American,0.9% Native American, and 0.8% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7%. The median income for a household in theVillage was $56,538, and the medianincome for a family was $60,694. The per capita income for the Village was $27,873. About 1.1% of the population was under the age of 18 and 2.3% of those age 65 and over were living below the poverty line. The village is located on the U.S. Census tract known as the Upper Peninsula of New Hampshire. The U.N. Census estimates the village's population at 1,021 in 2010, and 1,054 in 2011. The population of the Village is expected to grow to 1,500 by the end of the decade. The Village is located at the junction of the U-S. Route 1 and U-2 highways, and is on the New Hampshire Turnpike. It has a population of 967, with 706 homes, and a population density of 755.5 inhabitants per sq mile (291.7/km 2).

Economy

Racing at Elkhart Lake dates back to the 1950s. The first races were held on July 23, 1950 on a 3.35 mile road circuit north of the lake. Road America was built in 1955 with the first racing being held on September 10 & 11, 1955. Each year, Road America holds over 425 events, one of the most popular being the Kohler International Challenge in July. The economic impact from the track, its events, and visitors is estimated at $70 million annually. The 1952 races would be the last races held on the open road circuit. The 1951 races drew an estimated 50,000 spectators and the 1952 races saw an estimated crowd of over 100,000 people. The 1953 races saw a crowd of more than 80,000 at the start/finish line in the village. The 2012 races drew a crowd in the region of over 90,000. The 2013 races were attended by more than 70,000, including over 30,000 from the local community. The 2014 races drew over 20,000 visitors, including more than 10,000 racers from around the world. The track is located on a lake in the town of ElkhART, Wisconsin. It is located just south of the town's main road, which runs through the town. The race track is open to the public and is open year-round. It has been open since 1955. It was built on a site that used to be part of the village, but has since been turned into a golf course.

Arts and culture

Every July, during the Kohler International Challenge, Road & Track holds a race car Concours d'Elegance in the village. The cars park in the streets of Elkhart Lake, mainly on Lake Street, where curious visitors, car enthusiasts, and other racers alike walk up and down the streets looking at the cars. Jazz on the Vine is an annual festival held in May. Henschel's Indian Museum is located on an archaeological dig site and has a collection of Indian copper, pottery and artifacts that date back to 8,000 BC. The ElkhART Lake Depot Museum is a century-old railroad station that has original depot furnishings and local memorabilia. There are several museums in Elkharts Lake, including the Elkhar's Depot Museum and Hensche's Indian museum. The town is home to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History, which is open to the public every year. The museum is located in a former railroad station on the shores of the lake. The village is also the location of the Elkart Lake Golf Course, which was built in the early 20th century. The lake is the site of the first golf course in the United States, which opened in the late 1800s. Infrastructure

Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive was part of the road racing circuit used in the 1950s. Wisconsin Highway 67 runs north/south through the city. Secondary routes include County Highway A from the northeast and County Highway J from the northwest. Elkhart Lake is located approximately one mile southeast of the northern terminus of the Kettle Moraine Scenic drive. The lake is located about one mile from the city's downtown area.
