Laurens is a city in Pocahontas County, Iowa, United States. Its population was 1,264 at the 2020 census. It was named in honor of Henry and John Laurens, father and son, two French Huguenots who became residents of Charleston, South Carolina, and were loyal to the Colonies during the Revolution. It is home to the LaurensMarathon Community School District until its consolidation on July 1, 1976. All grades are located in Laurens High School, which is located in Pocontas Area 1, 1,000 feet above sea level. The city is located at 42°5050N 94°5058W (42.847105, -94.849542).According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.73 square miles (1.89 km²), all land. In 2000, there were 1,476 people in 656 households, including 400 families, in the city. In 2010, the town had a population of 1,258 people in 571 households. The racial makup of the city was 97.5% White, 0.3% African American,0.4% Native American, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4%. The city was named after Henry Laurens and his son, John Lauren, who were French Hugus who lived in South Carolina during the American Revolution.
History
Laurens was platted in 1881. It was named in honor of Henry and John Laurens, father and son, two French Huguenots who became residents of Charleston, South Carolina, and were loyal to the Colonies during the Revolution. The town is located on the banks of the Little River, which runs through the center of the city. The city was named for Henry Laurens who was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives in the early 19th century and served as mayor of Charleston from 1879 to 1883. It is named after Henry Lauren, who was one of the founders of Charleston in the late 1800s, and his son John Lauren who was also a South Carolina resident and mayor from 1881 to 1884. The community was named after the Laurens family, who were loyal during the French and Colonial Wars and fought in the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1777. It has a population of 2,000. The village is located in the town of Laurens which is located near Charleston, S.C. and the city's downtown area, which is about 30 miles south of the town's main business district, Charleston City Hall. It also has a smallpox hospital, which was established in 1879, and a public school, which opened in 1883, and has since been expanded to accommodate the growing population. The neighborhood is named for Laurens' son John, who served in the U.S. Army during the Revolutionary War.

Laurens was the home of Alvin Straight, a 73-year-old man famous for travelling 240 miles (390 km) on a lawnmower. His story was made into the film The Straight Story (1999), directed by David Lynch and starring Richard Farnsworth and Sissy Spacek. It was filmed partly in Laurens. "Lauren, Iowa" is also the title of an instrumental song in the soundtrack of the film, which is set in the town. The song is called 'Laurent, Iowa' and was recorded by the band The Shirelles, who are based on the novel by the same name. The novel is about a man who travels 240 miles on a mower. The film is based on a true story about the same man, Alvin Straight. The Straight story was filmed in and around Laurens, Iowa, between 1997 and 1998. The soundtrack for the film was recorded in Lauren's town hall, which was also used as the setting for the movie 'The Shawshank Redemption', which was shot in the same place as the original novel.
